mother! (Blu-ray Review) – Is the Jennifer Lawrence movie audaciously impressive or completely crazy?

January 21, 2018 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

Starring: Jennifer Lawrence, Javier Bardem, Ed Harris, Michelle Pfeiffer, Domhnall Gleeson
Director: Darren Aronofsky
Running Time: 121 mins
Certificate: 18
Release Date: January 22nd 2018 (UK)

There’s rarely been as big a divide between critics and audiences as there was with mother!. While it’s got a decent 69% from critics on RottenTomatoes, on its US release it got a rare ‘F’ CinemaScore, based on audience reaction. Only 19 films have ever been given such a low rating. Watching the film you can understand why, because audience members who typically just watch typical Hollywood fare almost certainly had no idea what they were getting into, and probably ended up very confused about what they’d just seen.

This is not your typical multiplex movie, but it was given a wide release and marketing that suggested it was a relatively mainstream-style horror flick. What it really is though is an auteur-fuelled, rather experimental arthouse movie, filled with allegory and surreal, Bunuel-esque touches, but done on a big budget and starring the biggest actress in the world right now. New Murder On The Orient Express Trailer – Johnny Depp & Kenneth Branagh lead the star-studded adaptation

September 24, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

1974’s film version of Agatha Christie’s Murder On The Orient Express is renowned for its all-star cast (including  Albert Finney (as Hercule Poirot), Sean Connery, Ingrid Bergman, John Gielgud, Vanessa Redgrave, Michael York and Jacqueline Bisset). Kenneth’s Branagh’s new take also wants to make sure there are plenty of recognisable face.

Branagh himself is playing the detective, Hercule Poirot (complete with ridiculous moustache), who’s joined on the journey by the likes of Johnny Depp, Daisy Ridley, Michelle Pfeiffer, Penelope Cruz, Josh Gad, Michael Pena, Judi Dench, Leslie Odom Jnr, and Derek Jacobi. The first trailer and poster for the movie has now arrived, which you can take a look at below.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘What starts out as a lavish train ride through Europe quickly unfolds into one of the most stylish, suspenseful and thrilling mysteries ever told.  From the novel by best-selling author Agatha Christie, “Murder on the Orient Express” tells the tale of thirteen strangers stranded on a train, where everyone’s a suspect. One man must race against time to solve the puzzle before the murderer strikes again. mother! Trailer – Darren Aronofsky heads into horror territory with Jennifer Lawrence

August 8, 2017 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

Darren Aronofsky (Noah, Black Swan) likes to make unusual films, and it seems his latest, mother! will follow that trend. This time around it looks like he’s going to be trying to scare us with something intense and a little bit weird. Jennifer Lawrence certainly doesn’t look like she’s having a good time.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘A couple’s relationship is tested when uninvited guests arrive at their home, disrupting their tranquil existence. From filmmaker Darren Aronofsky (Black Swan, Requiem for a Dream), mother! stars Jennifer Lawrence, Javier Bardem, Ed Harris and Michelle Pfeiffer in this riveting psychological thriller about love, devotion and sacrifice.’

Michelle Pfeiffer Will Be Janet Van Dyne In Ant-Man And The Wasp

July 23, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It’s starting to feel like there’s been a long gap between Ant-Man and its planned sequel, Ant-Man And The Wasp. However, with a July 2018 release planned, they’re now moving into high gear, filling out the cast. That includes the announcement at Comic Con that Michelle Pfeiffer has signed up to play Janet Van Dyne in the movie.

She joins fellow newbies, Walton Goggins as Ghost, Laurence Fishburne as Dr. Bill Foster and Randall Park as Jimmy Woo.

Janet Van Dyne is the mother of Evengeline Lilly’s Hope Van Dyne, who in the film will become The Wasp. It’s potentially major casting news, as in the comics, Janet was the original Wasp and the first wife of the original Ant-Man Dr. Henry Pym (Michael Douglas). She’s also been a member of The Avengers, and was even their chairman for a time. It therefore means there’s potentially space to move Pfeiffer into other Marvel movies.

Take Your First Look At Kenneth Branagh’s Star-Studded Murder On The Orient Express

May 3, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

While Kenneth Branagh was putting together his new filmic take on Agatha Christie’s classic Murder On The Orient Express, quite a few big-name stars came and went, including Angelina Jolie. However, he ended up with quite a cast, including Johnny Depp, Daisy Ridley, Michelle Pfeiffer, Penelope Cruz, Josh Gad, Willem Dafoe, Judi Dench, Olivia Colman, Derek Jacobi, Leslie Odom Jr., and Branagh himself and the famed Belgian detective, Hercule Poirot.

Now we’ve got out first look at the movie, via EW, which suggests plenty of 1930s glamour, while Branagh and his impressive facial hair suggest a more hard-nosed version of Poirot than we’re used to.

Christie’s novel is about a death on the world’s most famous train, when a man known as Mr. Ratchett is stabbed 12 times and killed. Hercule Poirot, who happens to be travelling on the Orient Express, starts to investigate, discovering that many people could be the culprit – which is where all the new movie’s other famous faces come in.

The movie is due out in November. Take a look at the first pics below. [Read more…]

Johnny Depp, Michelle Pfeiffer, Daisy Ridley & More Joining Murder On The Orient Express Remake

October 1, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

johnny-deppFor almost a year, Kenneth Branagh has been putting together a new film version of Murder On The Orient Express, with himself in the lead role of Hercule Poirot. A few months ago he had Angelina Jolie interested in starring, but she’s since backed out.

However, he’s now got a raft of great names signing on, with the likes of Johnny Depp, Daisy Ridley, Judi Dench, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Michael Pena joining the movie, along with Lucy Boynton, Tom Bateman, Derek Jacobi, and Leslie Odom Jr.. It certainly suggests he wants to follow the lead of the star-studded 1974 version, which featured Lauren Bacall, Albert Finney, Sean Connery, Ingrid Bergman, John Gielgud, Vanessa Redgrave, Michael York and Jacqueline Bisset.

Christie’s novel is about a death on the world’s most famous train, when a man known as Mr. Ratchett is stabbed 12 times and killed. Hercule Poirot, who happens to be travelling on the Orient Express, starts to investigate, discovering that many people could be the culprit. Branagh’s version will start shooting in November.

The Family Trailer – Robert De Niro teams with Luc Besson and goes gangster again

June 5, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

If you look through Robert De Niro’s CV, he hasn’t actually made all that many gangster films, but the ones he’s done have become so iconic that he’s perennially associated with the subgenre. Now he’s back in gangster territory for Luc Besson’s The Family, and we’ve got the first trailer and poster.

In the film, ‘A mafia boss and his family are relocated to a sleepy town in France under the witness protection program after snitching on the mob. Despite the best efforts of Agent Stansfield to keep them in line, Fred Manzoni, his wife Maggie and their children Belle and Warren can’t help but revert to old habits and blow their cover by handling their problems the “family” way, enabling their former mafia cronies to track them down.’

The film is due out in the autumn. [Read more…]

Starring: Chris Pine, Elizabeth Banks, Olivia Wilde, Michael Hall D’Addario, Michelle Pfeiffer
Director: Alex Kurtzman
Running Time: 109 mins
Certificate: 12
Release Date: March 4th 2013

Alex Kurtzman is best known for writing (alongside Roberto Orci) Mission: Impossible III, the Transformers movies, Star Trek and Cowboys & Aliens.
