Dunkirk (Blu-ray Review) – Christopher Nolan goes to war in impressive fashion

December 18, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Fionn Whitehead, Tom Hardy, Mark Rylance, Kenneth Branagh, Cillian Murphy
Director: Christopher Nolan
Running Time: 106 mins
Certificate: 12
Release Date: December 18th 2017 (UK)

Christopher Nolan is one of the few directors who can pretty much make any movie he wants. Thanks to the success of unconventional big budget movies such as Interstellar and Inception – and of course The Dark Knight trilogy – Warner Bros. trusts him to deliver. On the surface Dunkirk seems a more straightforward proposition as it’s a World War II movie, but as this is Nolan, he’s not going to make a war film quite like anyone else.

For a start there’s remarkably little dialogue and while there are main characters, we learn comparatively little about them. Likewise, while it’s about an incredibly famous event, it’s not interested in being an exposition-heavy historical overview, complete with officers pushing little boats around a war-room map to explain to us what’s going on. Instead it’s a film that wants to create a sense of realism about the events it’s talking about. It also has an almost puzzle-box nature – three intercut stories each taking place at a slightly different time – helping to create a sense of the chaos and uncertainty for those caught up in the events of late Spring 1940. Dunkirk (Cinema Review) – One of the best war movies ever made?

July 21, 2017 By George Elcombe Leave a Comment

Starring: Fionn Whitehead, Tom Hardy, Mark Rylance, Kenneth Branagh, Cillian Murphy
Director: Christopher Nolan
Running Time: 106 mins
Certificate: 12A
Release Date: July 21st 2017

Christopher Nolan is a franchise. Much like the Spielberg summer releases of yesteryear or any film by Stanley Kubrick, there is a devoted audience who can’t wait to see the director’s next film. More often than not, Nolan’s movies are original (to a degree), stand alone and the studio has faith in the director’s abilities.

Nolan’s relationship with Warner Brothers seems to be going from strength to strength and I’ve read that he has a tendency to deliver his movies under budget and before the scheduled deadline.

I also like to believe that the pitch meetings go something like:
Nolan: “I have this idea for my next film.”
Warner’s: “Great, sounds excellent! Here, have some money and let us know once it’s done!” [Read more…]

July 5, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

As always it’s been a summer filled with superheroes and sci-fi, but Christopher Nolan is offering up something a little different in a couple of weeks – Dunkirk. It’s his take on one of the most famous moments in World War II, and to keep us interested a new, minute long trailer has been released.

New Dunkirk Trailer – Christopher Nolan takes us into the intensity of a massive World War II rescue

May 7, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Having spent years in the world of sci-fi and comic books with the Dark Knight films, Inception and Interstellar, Christopher Nolan is doing something a little different. However, as this trailer shows, it’s still going to be on a massive scale, as he attempts to take us deep into events in Dunkirk during the Second World War.

Synopsis: ‘”Dunkirk” features a prestigious cast, including Tom Hardy (“The Revenant,” “Mad Max: Fury Road,” “Inception”), Mark Rylance (“Bridge of Spies,” “Wolf Hall”), Kenneth Branagh (“My Week with Marilyn,” “Hamlet,” “Henry V”) and Cillian Murphy (“Inception,” “The Dark Knight” Trilogy), as well as newcomer Fionn Whitehead. Take Your First Look At Kenneth Branagh’s Star-Studded Murder On The Orient Express

May 3, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

While Kenneth Branagh was putting together his new filmic take on Agatha Christie’s classic Murder On The Orient Express, quite a few big-name stars came and went, including Angelina Jolie. However, he ended up with quite a cast, including Johnny Depp, Daisy Ridley, Michelle Pfeiffer, Penelope Cruz, Josh Gad, Willem Dafoe, Judi Dench, Olivia Colman, Derek Jacobi, Leslie Odom Jr., and Branagh himself and the famed Belgian detective, Hercule Poirot.

Now we’ve got out first look at the movie, via EW, which suggests plenty of 1930s glamour, while Branagh and his impressive facial hair suggest a more hard-nosed version of Poirot than we’re used to.

Christie’s novel is about a death on the world’s most famous train, when a man known as Mr. Ratchett is stabbed 12 times and killed. Hercule Poirot, who happens to be travelling on the Orient Express, starts to investigate, discovering that many people could be the culprit – which is where all the new movie’s other famous faces come in.

The movie is due out in November. Take a look at the first pics below. [Read more…]

Dunkirk Trailer – Tom Hardy, Mark Rylance & Harry Styles go to war for Christopher Nolan

December 14, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Yesterday we got the first official poster for Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk, and that’s now been followed by a trailer. While it’s certainly intriguing, it’s perhaps not quite as big as you might have expected, and doesn’t really explain much about the plot, but it does do a decent job of making it look like a slightly more hopeful version of Saving Private Ryan.

It also briefly shows that this marks Harry Styles’ acting debut.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘”Dunkirk” features a prestigious cast, including Tom Hardy (“The Revenant,” “Mad Max: Fury Road,” “Inception”), Mark Rylance (“Bridge of Spies,” “Wolf Hall”), Kenneth Branagh (“My Week with Marilyn,” “Hamlet,” “Henry V”) and Cillian Murphy (“Inception,” “The Dark Knight” Trilogy), as well as newcomer Fionn Whitehead. Johnny Depp, Michelle Pfeiffer, Daisy Ridley & More Joining Murder On The Orient Express Remake

October 1, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

johnny-deppFor almost a year, Kenneth Branagh has been putting together a new film version of Murder On The Orient Express, with himself in the lead role of Hercule Poirot. A few months ago he had Angelina Jolie interested in starring, but she’s since backed out.

However, he’s now got a raft of great names signing on, with the likes of Johnny Depp, Daisy Ridley, Judi Dench, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Michael Pena joining the movie, along with Lucy Boynton, Tom Bateman, Derek Jacobi, and Leslie Odom Jr.. It certainly suggests he wants to follow the lead of the star-studded 1974 version, which featured Lauren Bacall, Albert Finney, Sean Connery, Ingrid Bergman, John Gielgud, Vanessa Redgrave, Michael York and Jacqueline Bisset.

Christie’s novel is about a death on the world’s most famous train, when a man known as Mr. Ratchett is stabbed 12 times and killed. Hercule Poirot, who happens to be travelling on the Orient Express, starts to investigate, discovering that many people could be the culprit. Branagh’s version will start shooting in November.

Tom Hardy & Kenneth Branagh To Star In Christopher Nolan’s WWII Drama Dunkirk

December 28, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Tom-Hardy

A couple of days ago rumours starting swirling that Christopher Nolan’s next movie would be about the epic evacuation of allied soldiers from the beaches of Dunkirk during World War II. That’s now been confirmed, with THR adding that Tom Hardy, Mark Rylance and Kenneth Branagh are both in talks to star.

Nolan also wrote the screeplay and, as he did for his Dark Knight movies and Insterstellar, the director will shoot certain sequences in IMAX, this time using IMAX 65mm alongside 65mm large format film photography for the rest of the movie. However, as this is Nolan, there are no exact details on the plot, nor info on what roles Hardy and Branagh will be playing. It’s believed the rest of the cast will largely be unknowns.

Warner Bros. President Greg SIlverman commented, “We are thrilled to be continuing our collaboration with Christopher Nolan, a singular filmmaker who has created some of the most critically acclaimed and commercially successful films of all time. Dunkirk is a gripping and powerful story and we are excited to see Chris, Emma and their cast realize it on the big screen.”

The Dunkirk evacuation ocurred in May 1940, when Belgian, British, and French soldiers in Northern France were cut off and surrounded by the German Army. It was a giant military disaster – something even Winston Churchill acknowledged in a speech in the House Of Commons – with hundreds of thousands of men trapped, with the German Army on one side and the sea on the other. A massive evacuation was put into operation, with Naval vessels joined by an armada of ‘little ships’, such as fishing boats, small ferries, tourist boats, lifeboats and merchant marine craft, which braved the seas and German guns in order to help rescue over 300,000 men.

The evacuation is one of the most incredible stories of the war – an event which could have allowed the Germans to win if the men had not been saved. Nolan’s movie will be released July 21st, 2017.

Kenneth Branagh Takes On Murder on the Orient Express As Both Director & Star

November 21, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Kenneth-Branagh-slideAfter the likes of Thor and Cinderella, Kenneth Branagh is heading towards a classic murder-mystery, as THR reports he’s set to star and direct in Fox’s long-gestating remake of Agatha Christie’s Murder On The Orient Express.

As the title suggests, Christie’s novel is about a death on the world’s most famous train, as a man known as Mr. Ratchett is stabbed 12 times and killed. Hercule Poirot, who happens to be travelling on the Orient Express starts to investigating, discovering that many people could be the culprit.

There are suggestions that Fox is thinking of Murder On The Orient Express as the first of a potential franchise, with plenty more Poirot stories that could be adapted if this film is a success. Michael Green is writing the screenplay.
