Take Your First Look At Kenneth Branagh’s Star-Studded Murder On The Orient Express

May 3, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

While Kenneth Branagh was putting together his new filmic take on Agatha Christie’s classic Murder On The Orient Express, quite a few big-name stars came and went, including Angelina Jolie. However, he ended up with quite a cast, including Johnny Depp, Daisy Ridley, Michelle Pfeiffer, Penelope Cruz, Josh Gad, Willem Dafoe, Judi Dench, Olivia Colman, Derek Jacobi, Leslie Odom Jr., and Branagh himself and the famed Belgian detective, Hercule Poirot.

Now we’ve got out first look at the movie, via EW, which suggests plenty of 1930s glamour, while Branagh and his impressive facial hair suggest a more hard-nosed version of Poirot than we’re used to.

Christie’s novel is about a death on the world’s most famous train, when a man known as Mr. Ratchett is stabbed 12 times and killed. Hercule Poirot, who happens to be travelling on the Orient Express, starts to investigate, discovering that many people could be the culprit – which is where all the new movie’s other famous faces come in.

The movie is due out in November. Take a look at the first pics below. [Read more…]

Love Is The Devil (Blu-ray Review)

November 22, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Derek Jacobi, Daniel Craig, Tilda Swinton, Anne Lambton, Adrian Scarborough
Director: John Maybury
Running Time: 91 mins
Certificate: 18
Release Date: November 23rd 2015 (UK)

John Maybury’s 1998 film about the relationship between painter Francis Bacon (Derek Jacobi) and his lover George Dyer (Daniel Craig) gets an HD upgrade from the British Film Institute with this Blu-ray release. The movie focuses on one period of Bacon’s life in the 1960s, when Bacon was already a lauded artist, considered by many as the greatest living British painter.

Bacon wakes up one night to find small-time thief George Dyer robbing his apartment/studio. Instead of calling police, Bacon invites Dyer into his bed. The thief accepts, which marks the start of an intense relationship between the two – one of whom is a rarefied figure in the world of art, while the other is a working class criminal. Initially their mismatched social status doesn’t matter, partly as their sexuality and attitudes means both feel like outsiders, but soon cracks begin to show. [Read more…]

Vicious Trailer – Take a look at Ian McKellen and Derek Jacobi’s new gay sitcom

April 13, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

British sitcoms can’t normally claim major international star power, but Vicious brings together gay acting legends Ian McKellen and Derek Jacobi and also features the likes of Frances De La Tour (who no Brits will recognise as Harry Potter’s Madame Maxime) and Misfits star Iwan Rheon.

The sitcom sees McKellen and Jacobi as an ageing gay couple, Freddie and Stuart, living in London’s Covent Garden, who still aren’t ‘out’ despite being together for 48 years. De La Tour plays the couple’s feisty best friend Violet, while Rheon is their new neighbour, Ash.

The series was co-created by Will & Grace writer Gary Janetti and award-winning playwright Mark Ravenhill, with Ed Bye (Red Dwarf) directing. There’s no definite air date set for the show yet, but it’s expected to his UK screens towards the end on April. [Read more…]

British Legends Of Stage & Screen (DVD)

December 10, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Glenda Jackson, Ian McKellen, Derek Jacobi, Claire Bloom, Michael Gambon
Director: Anthony Fabian
Running Time: 360 mins
Certificate: E
Release Date: December 10th 2012

At the end of British Legends Of Stage & Screen I got the distinct impression that you weren’t allowed to be an actor from the 1940s to the 1980s unless Sir Laurence Olivier said so. I’m sure it wasn’t quite as strict as that, but of the eights actors interviewed here, seven have Olivier based stories and six owe a large chunk of their early success to him. The only ones who don’t are Glenda Jackson and Christopher Lee, but even he claims to have snuck onto the set of Hamlet and hung around in the background. [Read more…]

Ian McKellen & Derek Jacobi Take On New Gay Sitcom

October 29, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Until recently ITV rather lagged behind other broadcasters on the number of gay characters in their programmes, but they’ve moved forward adding several LGBT people to the likes of Coronation Street and Downton Abbey. Now the Star on Sunday reports that ITV has commissioned a sitcom about an elderly gay couple.

Not only that, but they’ve managed to get a great pair of openly gay actors to play the men – Ian McKellen and Derek Jacobi. The sitcom is apparently titled Vicious Old Queens, and will see McKellen and Jacobi as an ageing gay couple living in London’s Covent Garden. The six thirty minute episodes were written by Gary Janetti, a former executive producer and writer on Will & Grace and Family Guy.

A source told the paper: ”No one can quite believe ITV have managed to get Sir Ian on board. Brit stars don’t get much bigger than him. It’s a great coup for ITV to get these two.”
