Victoria & Abdul Trailer – Judi Dench is back as Queen Victoria, but no longer Mrs. Brown

May 31, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

20 years ago, Judi Dench scored an Oscar nomination for Mrs. Brown, about Queen Victoria’s (platonic) relationship with her servant, John Brown, following the death of how husband. Now Dench is stepping into Vicky’s shoes again for Victoria & Abdul.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘The extraordinary true story of an unexpected friendship in the later years of Queen Victoria’s (Academy Award winner Judi Dench) remarkable rule. When Abdul Karim (Ali Fazal), a young clerk, travels from India to participate in the Queen’s Golden Jubilee, he is surprised to find favour with the Queen herself. As the Queen questions the constrictions of her long-held position, the two forge an unlikely and devoted alliance with a loyalty to one another that her household and inner circle all attempt to destroy. As the friendship deepens, the Queen begins to see a changing world through new eyes and joyfully reclaims her humanity.’

The movie is directed by Stephen Frears, who already has a bit of experience with regal movies, as he directed Helen Mirren in The Queen. The film will be in UK cinemas on September 15th. [Read more…]

Take Your First Look At Kenneth Branagh’s Star-Studded Murder On The Orient Express

May 3, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

While Kenneth Branagh was putting together his new filmic take on Agatha Christie’s classic Murder On The Orient Express, quite a few big-name stars came and went, including Angelina Jolie. However, he ended up with quite a cast, including Johnny Depp, Daisy Ridley, Michelle Pfeiffer, Penelope Cruz, Josh Gad, Willem Dafoe, Judi Dench, Olivia Colman, Derek Jacobi, Leslie Odom Jr., and Branagh himself and the famed Belgian detective, Hercule Poirot.

Now we’ve got out first look at the movie, via EW, which suggests plenty of 1930s glamour, while Branagh and his impressive facial hair suggest a more hard-nosed version of Poirot than we’re used to.

Christie’s novel is about a death on the world’s most famous train, when a man known as Mr. Ratchett is stabbed 12 times and killed. Hercule Poirot, who happens to be travelling on the Orient Express, starts to investigate, discovering that many people could be the culprit – which is where all the new movie’s other famous faces come in.

The movie is due out in November. Take a look at the first pics below. [Read more…]

Johnny Depp, Michelle Pfeiffer, Daisy Ridley & More Joining Murder On The Orient Express Remake

October 1, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

johnny-deppFor almost a year, Kenneth Branagh has been putting together a new film version of Murder On The Orient Express, with himself in the lead role of Hercule Poirot. A few months ago he had Angelina Jolie interested in starring, but she’s since backed out.

However, he’s now got a raft of great names signing on, with the likes of Johnny Depp, Daisy Ridley, Judi Dench, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Michael Pena joining the movie, along with Lucy Boynton, Tom Bateman, Derek Jacobi, and Leslie Odom Jr.. It certainly suggests he wants to follow the lead of the star-studded 1974 version, which featured Lauren Bacall, Albert Finney, Sean Connery, Ingrid Bergman, John Gielgud, Vanessa Redgrave, Michael York and Jacqueline Bisset.

Christie’s novel is about a death on the world’s most famous train, when a man known as Mr. Ratchett is stabbed 12 times and killed. Hercule Poirot, who happens to be travelling on the Orient Express, starts to investigate, discovering that many people could be the culprit. Branagh’s version will start shooting in November.

Philomena (Cinema)

November 5, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Steve Coogan, Judi Dench, Anna Maxwell Martin, Mare Winningham
Director: Stephen Frears
Running Time: 98 mins
Certificate: 12A
Release Date: November 1st 2013

Peter Mullan’s 2002 film The Magdalene Sisters was a howl of outrage at the Catholic Church in Ireland; a coruscating, raw drama about the abuse of young girls basically held prisoner by sadistic nuns after falling pregnant.

Stephen Freers’ Philomena has basically the same theme but is, by comparison, a gentle, warm story, which seems too timid to unveil the same power as Mullan’s film. Dench and Coogan have rightly garnered strong reviews for their performances, but the film’s script seems too scared of going for the emotional knockout punch, despite the real power of the story. Philomena Trailer – Steve Coogan teams up with Judi Dench

August 10, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Judi Dench and Steve Coogan play unlikely friends in Philomena, the moving, funny and at times shocking true story of one woman’s search for a lost son. Now the first trailer for the movie has arrived, which you can watch here.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Falling pregnant as a teenager in Ireland in 1952, Philomena was sent to the convent of Roscrea to be looked after as a “fallen woman”. When her baby was only a toddler, he was taken away by the nuns for adoption in America. Philomena spent the next fifty years searching for him but with no success.

‘Then she met Martin Sixsmith, a world-weary political journalist who happened to be intrigued by her story. Together they set off to America on a journey that would not only reveal the extraordinary story of Philomena’s son, but also create an unexpectedly close bond between Philomena and Martin.

‘The film is a compelling narrative of human love and loss that ultimately celebrates life, showing that there is laughter even in the darkest places.’

Directed by BAFTA winner Stephen Frears (The Queen), Philomena will open in the UK and Ireland on 1st November 2013. [Read more…]
