Martin Scorsese Set To Finally Make Silence

April 20, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

martin-scorseseAfter every Scorsese movie, fans start wondering what he’ll make next, and for the last few years in between each film rumours have surfaced that he was finally planning to shoot Silence, which he’s been attached to for over two decades.

Now Deadline reports that he’s finally planning to actually make the movie, based on Shusaku Endo’s controversial 1967 novel. The book is about two 17th century Jesuit priests who face violence and persecution when they travel to Japan to locate their mentor and to spread the gospel of Christianity, and discover that believers have been forced undergrounds and are being tortured. The book’s title refers to God’s silence during these troubling times.

Deadline’s report seems to confirm that Scorsese has officially left Snowman behind, with Universal recently said to be looking elsewhere for a director.

Financing is apparently now set for Silence and a shoot is planned for July 2014. Before then we’ll get Scorsese’s The Wolf Of Wall Street, which is out at the end of the year, and reunites the director with Leo DiCaprio.

Screenwriter Billy Ray Takes On Sinatra Biopic

August 14, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

For several years now Martin Scorsese has been slowly putting together a biopic of Frank Sinatra. That project is now moving on again, as screenwriter Billy Ray (The Hunger Games) has signed on to rewrite the script for the Universal Pictures movie.

The first news on the project came back in May 2009, when Phil Alden Robinson (Field Of Dream) was attached to write the screenplay, after producers Peter Guber and Cathy Schulman secured the life and music rights from Frank Sinatra Enterprises. The story will follow the crooner from his upbringing in Hoboken, New Jersey to his career in Hollywood where he sold millions of records as a singer and won an Oscar in 1953 for his role in From Here to Eternity.

Martin Scorsese is currently directing The Wolf of Wall Street, starring Leonardo DiCaprio. The filmmaker hasn’t officially committed to his next directorial project yet, although this could be next if the script comes together. (Source: Deadline)

Martin Scorsese Producing Rolls-Royce Biopic

May 15, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Rolls-Royce is already famed around the world for producing some of the most luxurious cars on the planet, but it seems Martin Scorsese thinks there’s more of interest about the company than that, as Variety reports that he’s teaming up with Richard Attenborough and Anthony Haas to produce a film called Silver Ghost, which will tell the story of how Charles Rolls and Henry Royce partnered up to create the car company.

Silver Ghost is described as a complex love story, not only between men and women, but men and machines. Set at the turn of the last century, it traces the story of Charles Rolls and Henry Royce, as well as the love affairs of the famed Beaulieu family (who started up the famed motor museum). Apparently one of the members of that family called the story a long-gestating ‘family secret’ but felt Scorsese, Attenborough and Haas would do the story justice and so have given them permission to go with it, although Variety doesn’t say exactly what that secret it.

Scorsese comments, “When I read the story of Silver Ghost, I was mesmerised. I immediately thought, ‘This is a picture that has to be made.’ And when I was asked to come aboard as a producer alongside Richard Attenborough and Anthony Haas, I didn’t hesitate for a moment.”

At the moment there’s no sign Scorsese will also direct, but it’s always a possibility, nor is there any indication when the movie might shoot.
