The Handmaiden Trailer – Take a look a Park Chan Wook’s lesbian-themed new film

August 2, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

the-handmaiden-slideSarah Waters’ lesbian-themed novel Fingersmith got a lot of praise when it was first released, and was turned into a British mini-series in 2005. Now though it’s getting a bit of a cultural makeover from Park Chan-wook, the celebrated director of Oldboy, Lady Vegeance and Stoke.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘PARK presents a gripping and sensual tale of two women – a young Japanese Lady living on a secluded estate, and a Korean woman who is hired to serve as her new handmaiden, but is secretly plotting with a conman to defraud her of a large inheritance. Inspired by the novel Fingersmith by British author Sarah Waters, THE HANDMAIDEN borrows the most dynamic elements of its source material and combines it with PARK Chan-wook’s singular vision to create an unforgettable viewing experience.’

Take a look at the trailer for the new movie below. The Handmaiden is due out in US cinemas in October. [Read more…]

Stoker (DVD)

July 3, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Mia Wasikowska, Nicole Kidman, Matthew Goode, Jacki Weaver
Director: Park Chan-Wook
Running Time: 95 mins
Certificate: 18
Release Date: July 1st 2013

Stoker was a real audience divider on its cinemas release, with some feeling that Oldboy director Park Chan-Wook’s first English-language film was an underwhelming bore, while others went as far as to call it a horror masterpiece. To be honest I can understand where both sides are coming from, as your appreciation of the film completely depends on whether you fall for the film’s endlessly dripping style. If you don’t, it’s difficult not to notice the plot is slightly wanting. [Read more…]

Nicole Kidman, Mia Wasikowska, and Matthew Goode Get Creepy In New Stoker Poster

December 21, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

stoker-poster1A slightly creepy new poster has emerged for Stoker, which mark Park Chan Wook’s English language debut. Nicole Kidman, Mia Wasikowska, and Matthew Goode, and seeing as Mia is holding a pencil in a bloodied hand, that’s probably good advice.

Based on a script written by Wentworth Miller, Stoker is about a young woman called India (Wasikowska) who is grieving after the death of her father (Dermot Mulroney). Things are made more complicated when Uncle Charlie (Goode), a relative she has never met before, comes to town and stays with India and her unstable mother (Kidman). But who is Uncle Charlie?

The film premieres at Sundance, and reaches UK cinemas on March 1st.

Stoker Trailer – Park Chan-Wook’s English-language debut gets a promo

September 27, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

There’s been a lot of interest in Stoker, largely because it marks the English-language debut of South Korean Oldboy helmer, Park Chan-Wook (and also because it’s written by Prison Break star Wentworth Miller). Now the first trailer for the movie has arrived. The film is about India (Mia Wasikowska’s), whose father dies in an auto accident. Shortly afterwards her Uncle Charlie (Matthew Goode), who she never knew existed, comes to live with her and her emotionally unstable mother Evelyn (Nicolne Kidman). Soon after his arrival, she comes to suspect this mysterious, charming man has ulterior motives, but instead of feeling outrage or horror, this friendless girl becomes increasingly infatuated with him. It’s currently set for release in the UK on March 1st, 2013.

Park Chan-Wook Heads For Corsica 72

September 18, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Oldboy helmer Park Chan-wook’s first English language film, Stoker, won’t hit cinemas until early next year, but it looks like he’s planning to stick with the English language, as the South Korean director is already eyeing future Hollywood projects.

He recently signed on to direct The Brigands of Rattleborge, and now Variety reports he’s attached to a crime drama called Corsica 72. The movie is based-on-a-true story about two young best friends living in Corsica in 1972 (as the title suggest) who go on to live divergent lives. As one becomes an upstanding business man, the other becomes a gangster, and they find their lives clash when they become interested in the same woman.

Neal Purvis and Robert Wade’s script has previously landed on the Black List of the best unproduced screenplay, so it’s already got a fair amount of steam behind it, although there’s no news on when it might shoot.
