Film Stars Don’t Die In Liverpool (Blu-ray Review) – They’re also only a little bit bi, apparently

March 23, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Jamie Bell, Annette Bening, Stephen Graham, Julie Walters, Kenneth Cranham
Director: Paul McGuigan
Running Time: 105 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: March 19th 2018 (UK)

In the late 1940s and 1950s Gloria Grahame was a big name Hollywood actress, known for the likes of The Big Heat (1953) and Oklahoma! (1955), as well as winning an Oscar for The Bad and the Beautiful (1952). However, her star power soon faltered.

Film Stars Don’t Die In Liverpool picks up her story in the 1970s, by which time Grahame (Annette Bening) is appearing in theatre in Britain. The older star meets the much younger Peter Turner (Jamie Bell), with a May-December romance developing. Grahame is flattered by the attentions of the younger man, while Turner is impressed by his beau’s celebrity – something that’s beguiling and exotic for a working-class Liverpudlian lad. September 4, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

What happens after you’ve been world-famous in Hollywood, but nobody remembers you anymore? That’s the central idea behind Film Stars Don’t Die In Liverpool, based on the true story of Gloria Grahame, and featuring a great cast including Annette Bening, Jamie Bell, Julie Walters, Vanessa Redgrave, Kenneth Cranham, Stephen Graham, Frances Barber and Leanne Best.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Liverpool, 1978: What starts as a vibrant affair between a legendary femme fatale and her young lover quickly grows into a deeper relationship, with Turner being the person Gloria turns to for comfort. Gloria Grahame was a Hollywood leading lady at the heart of several hit films from the Golden Age of Hollywood, including The Big Heat, It’s a Wonderful Life, In a Lonely Place, and Oklahoma! She won the Academy Award® for Best Supporting Actress for her role in The Bad and the Beautiful.’

The film’s European premiere will be at the BFI London Film Festival at the May Fair Hotel Gala on Wednesday October 11th, with a general UK cinema release set for November 17th, 2017. Take a look at the trailer below. [Read more…]

First Pics Of Daniel Radcliffe & James McAvoy On The Victor Frankenstein Set

April 25, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

victor-frankenstein-pic1Over two years ago Daniel Radcliffe signed on to be the Igor in a new Frankenstein movie, and it was July 2013 when James Mcavoy joined him as the infamous mad scientist. It’s taken a while to get things together but now the movie is heading towards a September UK release, and Empire has posted the first images from the set of the film.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘James McAvoy is Victor Von Frankenstein and Daniel Radcliffe stars as Igor in a unique, never-before-seen twist on Mary Shelley’s classic 19th century novel. Told from Igor’s perspective, we see the troubled young assistant’s dark origins, his redemptive friendship with the young medical student Victor Von Frankenstein, and become eyewitnesses to the emergence of how Frankenstein became the man—and the legend—we know today.’

McAvoy comments, “As much as the monster is his creation, Igor is his creation as well. That was quite exciting. It’s funny, the script, but also really dark, in a cool way.”

It’s an interesting idea and it’ll be interesting to see if it works. As it has a script by Max Landis (Chronicle), hopefully it will.

Jessica Brown Findlay Joins Daniel Radcliffe & James McAvoy In Frankenstein

September 11, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Jessica-Brown-FindlayAt this rate there won’t be anyone in Downton Abbey who doesn’t have a burgeoning movie career (or in the case of Maggie Smith and Shirley Maclaine, an incredible, decades-spanning one). Now Lady Sybil Branson, aka actress Jessica Brown Findlay, is set to join the cast of Frankenstein, according to THR.

James McAvoy and Daniel Radcliffe are already set to star, with Paul McGuigan directing from a script by Max Landis. There still aren’t many details on the exact direction that this new take on Mary Shelley’s classic tale will take, although Landis has said he’s planning to put a sci-fi spin on the tale of a creature that is produced by a scientific experiment.

Radcliffe will be the manservant, Igor, with McAvoy and Dr. Frankenstein. Brown will be a ‘trapeze artist who is saved by Igor after an accident, with the two becoming very close in the aftermath’.

It certainly seems the Igor role will be significantly expanded from previous films (he is, after all, a movie creation rather than being in the book. Daniel Radcliffe recently said at the Toronto Film Festival, “It’s about two young, brilliant guys pushing each other. Eventually one loses his morality and the other has to bring him back.”

20th Century Fox is hoping to get the film into production as soon as possible, as there are various other Frankenstein movies in development all over Hollywood – and that’s not to mention the more modern I Frankenstein, starring Aaron Eckhart, which is out early next year.

James McAvoy Joins Daniel Radcliffe In New Frankenstein Movie

July 26, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

james-mcavoy-wantedA couple of weeks ago it was revealed that Toby Kebbell and Jack Huston were testing for the role of Dr. Victor Frankenstein in Fox’s planned new take on Mary Shelley’s classic tale. However neither of them scored the role, as Deadline now reports that James McAvoy is in the middle of making a deal for the movie.

He’ll join Daniel Radcliffe, who’s long been attached to play the servant Igor in the movie (it’s still no clear if Igor has been made a more central role in this take, or whether Radcliffe just wants to be a hunchback).

Chronicle’s Max Landis wrote the script for this new take on Frankenstein, with Paul McGuigan (Push) set to direct. The film promises a new take on the story, putting a sci-fi spin on the tale a creature that is produced by a scientific experiment.

The studio is hoping to move forward as soon as possible, as there are various other Frankenstein movies in development all over Hollywood – and that’s not to mention the more modern I Frankenstein, starring Aaron Eckhart, which is out early next year.

Benedict Cumberbatch To Play Gay Beatles Manager Brian Epstein

November 1, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

While some have suggested Benedict Cumberbatch is playing gay in Sherlock, he’s now going to do it properly, playing Beatles manager Brian Epstein in a new biopic of the man who guided the Fab Four to fame.

The Tom Hanks produced movie will focus on the manager’s entire life, rather than just being a story about The Beatles from his perspective. Brian Epstein signed the iconic band back in 1961. He initially had difficulty getting a label to take them, before he launched them to international superstar status. While he’s best remembered for his relationship to the Liverpudlians, he also managed the likes of Cilla Black and Gerry & the Pacemakers.

Epstein was also a closeted homosexual, whose sexuality was completely concealed from the public, although it was an open secret amongst his friends and associates. It’s little surprise it was kept secret, as homosexuality was still illegal in the UK at the time. He’s also said to have had an ‘almost’ love affair with John Lennon, which was never consummated (at least that’s how Lennon put it). Epstein battled addictions with drugs and gambling, and tragically died of an accidental overdose of sleeping pills in 1967, just one month before homosexuality was decriminalised in England and Wales.

Todd Graff wrote the screenplay for the film. The openly gay Graff is a former actor (perhaps best known for The Abyss), who’s more recently written and directed music-fuelled movies such as Camp, Bandslam and Joyful Noise. However he won’t helm this one, as Paul McGuigan (Lucky Number Slevin, Push) has that job. The director already has a good relationship with Cumberbatch as he helmed four out of the six episodes of Sherlock that have been released so far.

It isn’t clear when this film might shoot. (Source: THR)

Frankenstein Gets Lucky Number Slevin Director Paul McGuigan

September 6, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Director Paul McGuigan (Lucky Number Slevin, Push) is in final talks to take the helm of Fox’s Frankenstein, taking over from the previously attached Shawn Levy (Real Steel), according to THR.

Levy apparently exited after it became clear that the filmmaker and studio had different visions for the project. Shawn Levy wanted a big-budget affair, while the studio wanted to cut costs. Last July Max Landis (Chronicle) signed on to write the screenplay, although it isn’t known if a new writer will now be brought on to the project.

The plan is to create a revisionist take on Mary Shelley’s classic novel, with a sci-fi twist. The story will also tackle themes such as friendship and redemption.
