Tracey Ullman Joins Johnny Depp & Meryl Streep In Into The Woods

June 13, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Tracey-UllmanWith the plot of Into The Woods seeing the main characters meeting various fairytale characters, there’s plenty of room for director Rob Marshall to line up star turns. The likes of Meryl Streep, Johnny Depp, Chris Pine, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Emily Blunt have already signed on, and now THR reports that Britain’s own Tracey Ullman has joined the throng.

Into The Woods follows a baker and his wife (Blunt) who try to break a curse placed upon them, which prevents them from having children, by confronting the witch (Streep) who caused their trouble in the first place. Along the way, they encounter fairy tale characters such as Rapunzel, Cinderella (Pine and Gyllenhaal will be the princes from those tales), Little Red Riding Hood (Depp is up to be the wolf), and many more.

Ullman will play the mother of Jack The Giant Killer, although her son is yet to be cast.

The movie is based on Stephen Sondheim’s classic musical, with shooting due to kick off later this year.

Emily Blunt May Go Into the Woods Alongside Meryl Streep & Johnny Depp

May 17, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

emily-bluntWith a plot that involves a journey where the main characters meet various fairytale characters along the way, a film version of Stephen Sondheim’s musical, Into The Woods, has plenty of room for star turns. It already has Meryl Streep as an evil witch, Johnny Depp going big bad wolf, and just the other day Chris Pine and Jake Gyllenhaal entered negotiations to play some pompous princes.

Now someone else has entered talks to show off their singing skills in the movie, as Variety reports that Emily Blunt is in final talks for one of the lead roles. Into The Woods follows a baker and his wife who try to break a curse placed that’s left them childless, by confronting the witch (Streep) who caused their trouble in the first place. Assuming she signs on the dotted line, Blunt will be the baker’s wife.

Rob Marshall is set to direct, with filming kicking off later this year. There’s also still plenty of space for more movie stars doing a musical turn, as the likes of Rapunzel, Cinderella, and Little Red Riding Hood are still to be cast.

Jake Gyllenhaal & Chris Pine Could Head Into The Woods For A Musical

Jake Gyllenhaal

Jake Gyllenhaal

Jake Gyllenhaal and Chris Pine aren’t the first people you’d think of when looking for people who could sing, but it seems they both want to show off their skills, as THR reports they’re in talks for Rob Marshall’s planned movie version of Stephen Sondheim’s musical, Into The Woods.

Johnny Depp and Meryl Streep are already on board, so if Gyllenhaal and Pine sign up, it’s gonna be a pretty starry adaptation.

Into The Woods follows a baker and his wife who try to break a curse placed upon them, which prevents them from having children, by confronting the witch (Streep) who caused their trouble in the first place. Along the way, they encounter fairy tale characters such as Rapunzel, Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, and many more (Depp will be the big bad wolf).

Pine and Gyllenhaal are up to play the film’s pompous princes, who get a big musical number of their own. The current plan is to shoot Into The Woods this autumn.

Pine’s not only planning to go musical, as TheWrap reports he’s is talks to reunite with Smokin’ Aces director Joe Carnaham on Stretch. Patrick Wilson is already onboard as a limo driver who has the unfortunate responsibility of driving around a mysterious billionaire “who drags him to hell and back.” Pine’s role isn’t mentioned, but there’s a good chance he’ll be the billionaire.

Johnny Depp Heads Into the Woods With Meryl Streep In Sondheim’s Musical

April 27, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Johnny-DeppRob Marshall has been working on a film version of Stephen Sondheim’s musical Into The Woods, with Meryl Streep attached to star (although a final deal still hasn’t been reached). Now another big name is circling the project, as Johnny Depp is in talks to join Disney’s adaptation, according to Variety.

The project is based on Sondheim’s musical, with a book by James Lapine, which follows a baker and his wife who try to break a curse placed upon them, which prevents them from having children. Along the way, they encounter fairy tale characters such as Rapunzel, Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, and many more.

Rob Marshall is directing from a screenplay by Lapine. David Krane is working on the music for the adaptation, with John DeLuca producing. The current plan is to shoot in 2014, with Depp starring after he shoots Transcendence and Black Mass back-to-back.

Meryl Streep Heads Into the Woods For Rob Marshall’s Sondheim Adaptation

October 4, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Last time Rob Marshall adaptated a lesser-known but still much admired musical, Nine, it didn’t turn out too well, but nevertheless he’s keen to get a film version of Stephen Sondheim’s Into The Woods on the screen. Broadway World reports he may have some heavyweight help in the form of Meryl Streep, as she is in talks to join the movie.

Into The Woods weaves multiple fairy-tales together including Little Red Riding Hood, Cinderella, Jack and the Beanstalk and Rapunzel. The story centres on a evil witch who curses the main character, Baker, and his wife. The two have to try and reverse the curse, which prevents them from bearing children. It isn’t known exactly who Streep might play.

Warner Bros and Disney recently hosted a screenplay reading for the film, which included Nina Arianda as The Baker’s Wife, Christine Baranski as the Stepmother, Tammy Blanchard as Florinda, Victoria Clark as Cinderella’s Mother/Giant, James Corden as the Baker, David Garrison as the Narrator, Ivan Hernandez as the Wolf, Megan Hilty as Lucinda, Cheyenne Jackson as Rapunzel’s Prince, Allison Janney as Jack’s Mother, Anna Kendrick as Cinderella, Michael McGrath as the Steward/Baker’s Father, Donna Murphy as the Witch, Laura Osnes as Rapunzel, Taylor Trensch as Jack, Casey Whyland as Little Red Riding Hood and Patrick Wilson as Cinderella’s Prince. It isn’t known if any of those might make it to the movie.

Author James Lapine wrote the original book and is re-writing the screenplay, with Stephen Sondheim adding songs as they go along. It isn’t clear when the movie might shoot.

Rob Marshall Going Into The Woods

January 11, 2012 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

Stephen Sondheim may be beloved by the musical theatre cognoscenti, but he’s never been quite so popular in Hollywood. There have been adaptations such as Sweeney Todd, but generally his musicals have been a bit highbrow for mainstream film.

However now Chicago and Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides director Rob Marshallis taking on Sondheim’s Into the Woods for Walt Disney Pictures, as part of a two-year deal with the studio, according to THR.

Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine’s Broadway musical incorporates several fairy tale characters such as Cinderella, Rapunzel, and Little Red Riding Hood into the story of a baker who attempts to start a family with his wife. James Lapine is currently writing the screenplay adaptation, which will feature new songs by Sondheim. It’s definitely one of the the composer’s more commercial and easily accessible works.

It isn’t clear yet if Into the Woods will be Rob Marshall’s next project. He also has The Thin Man in development, which has Johnny Depp attached to star. There is also the possibility he will return to direct Pirates of the Caribbean 5.
