120 BPM (Beats Per Minute) (Cinema Review) – The acclaimed, gay themed French movie finally arrives in the UK

April 6, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Nahuel Perez Biscayart, Arnaud Valois, Adele Haenel, Antoine Reinartz, Félix Maritaud
Director: Robin Campillo
Running Time: 143 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: April 6th 2018 (UK)

120 BPM has been eliciting praise ever since it debuted at Cannes last year, including winning the Grand Prix and Queer Palm at the festival. It’s gone on to win multiple other awards, including Best Film at the Cesar Awards (France’s equivalent of the Oscars). It was also France’s entry for Best Foreign Language Film at the Academy Awards, although sadly it missed out on a nomination.

Written and directed by Robin Campillo (who also made the very good Eastern Boys), 120 BPM is a fictionalised take on the true story of the AIDS activist organisation, ACT UP Paris. Campillo and co-screenwriter Philippe Mangeot were involved with ACT UP themselves, helping to give the movie an authenticity and power it may otherwise have lacked. Thankfully though, despite being close to the story Campillo is objective enough to be able to acknowledge the flaws and problems within the organisation, while also having a clear-eyed view of why these things happened. This allows it to be a powerful and empathetic testament to both ACT UP and those who were/are affected by AIDS, without becoming hagiography. [Read more…]

120 BPM (Beats Per Minute) UK Trailer – Get a taste of the acclaimed tribute to HIV/AIDS activism

March 8, 2018 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

Robin Campillo’s movie has gained a lot of buzz since its Cannes debut. At the festival the movie won the Queer Palm for the best LGBT movie, the prestigious Fipresci award for the best film at the festival from the International Federation of Film Critics, and second biggest award at the fest, the Grand Prix. It was then chosen as France’s Oscar contender for the Besti Foreign Language Film Academy Award.

Most recently it picked up six gongs at France’s top film awards, the Cesars, including Best Film, Best Original Screenplay for the movie’s writer/director, Robin Campillo, and Best New Actor for Nahuel Perez Biscayart.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘A beautiful, stirring call to action about the AIDS epidemic of the 80s and early 90s, it follows a new romance within a chapter of ACT-UP Paris, the activist group going to battle for those stricken with HIV/AIDS taking on major Pharma companies and the lacklustre government response with bold, invasive protests – embracing their mission with literal life or death urgency. Amid rallies, protests, fierce debates and ecstatic dance parties, the newcomer Nathan falls in love with Sean, the group’s radical firebrand, and their passion sparks against the shadow of mortality as the activists fight for a breakthrough.’

The movie will be released in UK cinemas April 6th. Take a look at the new trailer below. [Read more…]

The Gay-Themed BPM Wins Big At France’s Cesar Film Awards

March 4, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The Cesar Awards are France’s version of the Oscars, honouring the very best in Gallic cinema. This year the big winner was BPM (aka 120 battements par minute/120 Beats Per Minute), which picked up the Best Film Award, long with five other gongs. That included Best Original Screenplay for the movie’s writer/director, Robin Campillo, and Best New Actor for Nahuel Perez Biscayart.

BPM had tied with Albert Dupontel’s See You Up There in terms of the number of nominations, with 13 apiece. However, it was BPM that ended up the biggest winner with six awards to See You Up There’s five.

It will be some consolation to the film as, after being chosen as France’s entry for the Best Film Not In The English Lanuguage Oscar, it failed to score a nomination. The movie is set in Paris in the early 1990s, following a group of activists going in to battle for those stricken with HIV/AIDS, taking on sluggish government agencies and major pharmaceutical companies in bold, invasive actions. Amid rallies, protests, fierce debates and ecstatic dance parties, newcomer Nathan falls in love with Sean, the group’s radical firebrand, and their passion sparks against the shadow of mortality as the activists fight for a breakthrough.

AKA 120 Beats Per Minute, Robin Campillo’s movie has gained a lot of buzz since its Cannes debut. 120 Beats Per Minute Trailer – Eastern Boys’ Robin Campillo pays tribute to HIV/AIDS activist group ACT UP

May 22, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

One of the movies in competition at Cannes this year is 120 Beats Per Minute, from Eastern Boys helmer, Robin Campillo. The film is a bit of a love letter to ACT UP, the HIV/AIDS activist group that Campillo himself was involved with himself during his youth. While we normally hear about what ACT UP did in the US, this movie focuses on the grassroots organisation in France.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Early 1990s. With AIDS having already claimed countless lives for nearly ten years, Act up-Paris activists multiply actions to fight general indifference. Nathan, a newcomer to the group, has his world shaken up by Sean, a radical militant, who throws his last bits of strength into the struggle.’

Take a look at the trailer for the movie below. No release date is currently set beyond an August debut in France. [Read more…]

Eastern Boys (Cinema Review)

December 6, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Olivier Rabourdin, Kirill Emelyanov, Daniil Vorobyov
Director: Robin Campillo
Running Time: 128 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: December 5th 2014

I’m not a big fan of French cinema. Although the country has produced some magnificent movies, I find most of it to be ponderous and far too impressed with itself. However after Stranger By The Lake and now Eastern Boys, I’m starting to think France may be becoming the premier place for gay-themed cinema.

Daniel (Olivier Rabourdin) solicits a young Eastern European man, Marek (Kirill Emelyanov), for sex at the Parisian train station, negotiating a price and arranging to meet at Daniel’s place later that week. However when the time comes it’s not Marek who turns up, but all his ‘friends’, led by their intimidating boss (Daniil Vorobyov), who proceed to party in the apartment and then completely clear it out, threatening that they will accuse Daniel of being a paedophile if he does anything. Eastern Boys Trailer – Love story and thriller comes together in the gay-themed film

November 29, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Eastern-Boys-QuadFrom Robin Campillo the celebrated writer of Palm d’Or winner The Class  and creator of The Returned, comes his highly acclaimed second dramatic feature film, the thriller Eastern Boys. Peccadillo Pictures releases the film in the UK on December 5th, so it’s the perfect time to take a look at the trailer.

In Eastern Boys, Daniel cruises the Gare du Nord where Eastern European Boys hang out. One afternoon he plucks up his courage to speak to Marek, one of the boys and invites him to his home. However, next day when the doorbell rings, Daniel hasn’t the faintest idea that he has fallen into a trap.

If you’d like a little more than just the movie, Robin Campillo will be present for a live Q&A at Curzon Soho on Friday 5th December and then Hackney Picturehouse on Saturday 6th. Take a look at the trailer below and check back in few days for our review of the film. [Read more…]
