New White House Down Trailer – Channing Tatum takes on the terrorists

May 3, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Channing Tatum is getting his action movie on this summer in Roland Emmerich’s White House Down. He stars as a secret service agent who’s in the White House when a group of terrorists take over. He’s then tasked with guiding the President (Jamie Foxx) to safety. Maggie Gyllenhaal, James Woods, Jason Clarke, Richard Jenkins, Lance Reddick and Joey King also star.

The new trailer offers more plot than previous promos, and as you’d expect with Emmerich, when the sh*t hits the fan, things get very explosive and no world famous landmark is safe.

The film hits US cinemas this June, but won’t reach the UK until September 6th.

Roland Emmerich Considers Making Stonewall Gay Rights Film

April 22, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

roland-emmerichNormally Roland Emmerich only seems to like to make movies if he gets to blow everything up, but it appears he’s considering something a little smaller and more personal. It won’t involve the destruction of the whole of New York – as in Independence Day, The Day After Tomorrow and Godzilla – instead focussing on the civil disobedience of the Stonewall Riots in the city, which helped kick off the modern gay rights movement.

Empire recently spoke to Emmerich, who revealed that before launching himself into the Independence Day sequels ID Forever Parts 1 & 2, “I may want to do a little movie – about $12-14 million – about the Stonewall Riots in New York. It’s about these crazy kids in New York, and a country bumpkin who gets into their gang, and at the end they start this riot and change the world.”

If you’re not up on your gay history, before the 1970s police commonly raided gay bars, arrested the patrons and hauled them off to the police station – something that could result in those exposed having their entire lives destroyed. However on June 28th, 1969 (the day of Judy Garland’s funeral, no less), the police raided the Stonewall Inn on Christopher Street in New York. While the authorities were used to getting no resistance from the gay people whose lives they were potentially ruining, on that night the patrons, led by a group of angry drag queens and homeless gay people who were using the Inn as a shelter, fought back.

This led to several nights of rioting, the effect of which spread across the US and the world. By the following June, several cities held Christopher Street Day parades, which was essentially the birth of Pride and the modern gay rights movement.

Emmerich adds, “It’s one of these civil rights moments, like Rosa Parks,” he told Empire. “And very little is known about it. Even gay people don’t know much about it. There are only two books written about it.”

Playwright John Robin Bates is writing the script, about a homeless gay teen who ends up involved in Stonewall. “I’ve got more and more involved in the Gay & Lesbian Centre in Los Angeles,” says Emmerich, “and I learned that 40% of homeless kids are gay. So things haven’t changed very much. But I put this together and said, I should make a movie about that, so it starts with a kid who gets thrown out of his home and ends up on the streets of the village, and becomes friends with all these kids. In a weird way, it shows that it’s still something that happens today.

“I read a lot about it and was so surprised. It was the first time that gay people had shown the police that they should take them serious. And when the riot police came – this has always been fascinating for me – these kids formed a chorus line and sang ‘We are the village girls, we wear our hair in curls!’ It was such a cool thing.”

The story has been told on-screen before, such as in the 1995 film Stonewall, but the low budget movie never got much distribution so few people have seen it (even though it’s pretty good). It’ll be interesting to see Emmerich’s take on it.

White House Down Trailer – Plus Channing Tatum gets armed for a new poster

March 27, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

A few years ago Roland Emmerich said he was moving away from epic disaster movies, but his love of destroying iconic landmarks continues unabated, as this trailer for White House Down shows the Capitol Building getting it, amongst others.

The trailer seems deliberately timed to hit just as Olympus Has Fallen arrives in US cinemas, so that audiences can see that while they may both tell a similar story, this one’s going to be on a bigger scale.

Channing Tatum stars as a secret service agent who’s in the White House when a group of terrorists take over. He’s then tasked with guiding the President (Jamie Foxx) to safety. Maggie Gyllenhaal, James Woods, Jason Clarke, Richard Jenkins, Lance Reddick and Joey King also star.

The Roland Emmerich directed film hits US cinemas this June, but won’t reach the UK until September 6th. Take a look at the trailer above, while a new Tatum centred poster is below.

Independence Day Sequels Plot Details Revealed

March 27, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

will-smith-independence-dayIndependence Day 2 & 3 are sequel ideas that never die, with director Roland Emmerich and star Will Smith often hinting that they’re still in the works, but it’s only been recently that there’s seemed to be real impetus behind the idea – even though they’re still a fair way off – with the titles ID Forever Part One and ID Forever Part Two recently revealed.

Now Emmerich has given some info about the proposed plots of the sequels, which suggest they may be hoping to get Independence Day 2 in cinemas in three years time, exactly two decades after the first film. The filmmaker revealed to EW that the follow-up’s story is set 20 years after the first movie, centring on a distress call that was made by the first wave of aliens in Independence Day.

He says, “The humans knew that one day the aliens would come back. And they know that the only way you can really travel in space is through wormholes. So for the aliens, it could take two or three weeks, but for us that’s 20 or 25 years.”

Roland Emmerich wrote the screenplays for both ID Forever – Part 1 and ID Forever – Part 2, but now he’s handed them over to his White House Down writer, James Vanderbilt, to do a rewrite.

The director also said that the humans have embraced the alien technology in the years following the initial attack. “It’s a changed world. It’s like parallel history,” he says. “[Humans] have harnessed all this alien technology. We don’t know how to duplicate it because it’s organically-grown technology, but we know how to take an antigravity device and put it in a human airplane.”

Independence Day star Bill Pullman is on board for both movies, although Will Smith has not been confirmed quite yet. The filmmaker revealed this story will focus on a new generation of heroes, including the stepson of Will Smith’s character, played by Ross Bagley in the original. “It’s still some of the same characters, but also new younger characters; it’s a little bit like the sons take over. The first one ends on a little success, but only enough to give the humans hope. And then in the second one they free themselves again [from the aliens].”

A 3D version of the original Independence Day Is due in cinemas this summer, and if that’s a success, it’ll certainly give more impetus to the sequels.

First Pics Of Channing Tatum In White House Down Arrive

November 6, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The battle of the rival movies about the White House being taken over by terrorisst has started, with the first images from White House Down arriving via EW (and scanned by the fine folks at HeyUGuys).

Roland Emmerich directs the film, which is about a young Secret Service agent (Channing Tatum) who gets put to the ultimate test when a paramilitary group invades the White House and takes everyone hostage. Jamie Foxx, James Woods and Maggie Gyllenhaal also star.

The film will be going up against Olympus Has Fallen, which has a broadly similar plot, but has Antoine Fuqua directing, with Gerard Butler and Morgan Freeman starring. That movie is trying to get a jump on White House Down, with a spring release, while Emmerich’s movie hits US cinemas in June and is currently scheduled to hit the UK in September.

White House Down First Look – Channing Tatum does his first take happy dance

September 28, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The US TV programme Entertainment Tonight may look like it’s made for people with severe ADHD, but it does get some good scoops, including a first look on the set of White House Down, the new thriller starring Channing Tatum and Jamie Foxx. The movie is currently shooting, but ET was on the set to catch up with the stars and take a look at the action-packed flick. The movie stars Tatum as a man who was rejected from the Secret Service, but gets to protect the President (Foxx) anyway, when terrorist take over the White House. It hits cinemas next summer.

Richard Jenkins Up For White House Down

July 17, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The battle of the movies about bad guys taking over the White House continues apace, with Variety reporting that Richard Jenkins is in talks to star in Roland Emmerich’s White House Down, which should start shooting fairly soon (Antoine Fuqua’s rival Olympus Has Fallen, started filming last week).

The movie is about a young Secret Service agent (Channing Tatum) who gets put to the ultimate test when a paramilitary group invades the White House and takes everyone hostage. Jamie Foxx, James Woods and Maggie Gyllenhaal also star.

Jenkins is in talks to play the Speaker Of The House of Congress, the man who’s next in line for the Presidency if both the President and Vice President can’t fulfill their duties. There’s a good chance therefore that Jenkins may be somehow involved in the hostage situation.

James Woods Circles White House Down

July 10, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

We haven’t seen James Woods too much on the big screen lately, but now he has entered into early negotiations for a role in Sony’s White House Down for director Roland Emmerich, according to Variety.

The movie is about a young Secret Service agent (Channing Tatum) who gets put to the ultimate test when a paramilitary group invades the White House and takes everyone hostage. If a deal is finalised, Woods will play the head of the President’s protection detail. But as this is James Woods, what’s the betting he’s secretly a bad guy? Jamie Foxx and Maggie Gyllenhaal also star.

Roland Emmerich is directing from a screenplay by James Vanderbilt, which was acquired by Sony for a whopping $3 million back in March. Shooting is scheduled to begin next month.

Maggie Gyllenhaal Circles White House Down

June 8, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Sony’s plans to get White House Down into production as quickly as possible continue apace, as just yesterday we reported Jamie Foxx was in talks to join Channing Tatum in the movie, and now Maggie Gyllenhaal has joined the steadily growing cast of director Roland Emmerich’s film.

The movie is about a paramilitary group that takes the White House hostage. Jamie Foxx is in talks to play the President, while Channing Tatum is portraying a Secret Service agent who tries to stop the takeover. Maggie Gyllenhaal will play another Secret Service agent, who is assigned to protect the President.

Roland Emmerich is directing from a screenplay by James Vanderbilt (The Amazing Spider-Man). It’s believed it will shoot later this summer. (Source: Deadline)
