Easy A Director Will Gluck Takes On Agatha Christie Disappearance Adventure

March 6, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

will-gluckThere’s long been a lot of interest in what happened to Agatha Christie when she went missing in 1926. Now Will Gluck is going to try and tell us the answer, as Deadline reports that he’s signed up to helm Will Gluck (Easy A, Friends with Benefits) to direct Agatha for Paramount Pictures, based on Allison Schroeder’s spec screenplay.

As nobody really knows what happened to Christie during those 11 days, the film speculates about the events. Christie went missing in December 1926, sparking a massive manhunt for the beloved author, before she was found at the Swan Hydropathic Hotel in Yorkshire, England, registered as Mrs. Teresa Neele from Cape Town, South Africa.

The author never explained her unusual disappearance (it’s believed to have been caused by problems in her marriage). However the script turns the events into an action-adventure, which is described as a cross between Sherlock Holmes and Romancing the Stone.

There’s no new on when it might shoot, although it may be a while, as Gluck recently signed on to write and direct Sony’s planned Annie remake.

Beasts Of The Southern Wild’s Quvenzhane Wallis Up For Annie

February 9, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

quvenzhane-wallisBecoming the youngest Best Actress Oscar nominee ever is an impressive achievement, and may well lead to a big career for Beasts Of The Southern Wild’s Quvenzhane Wallis. The nine-year-old is now up to replace the recently departed Willow Smith in the planned new version of the musical, Annie.

After being in development for so long that Smith is now too old for the role (it’s also suggested she wants to dial back of her career and just be a kid for a bit longer), things seems to be moving forward fast, with Easy helmer Will Gluck signing up to direct a few days ago. And now EW reports that Wallis is being considered for the lead. She doesn’t have the role yet, but she’s definitely in contention.

The film is a new take on the musical, with Will Smith and Jay-Z working together to give the story a more contemporary update, which presumably means the songs will be getting a bit of a hip-hop vibe.

Will Gluck To Direct Annie Makeover, But Willow Smith Will No Longer Star

January 31, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It’s taken longer for producers Will Smith and Jay-z to come up with their new version of the musical Annie than originally planned, which means that now it’s ready to go forward, Willow Smith – who the film was originally designed as a starring vehicle for – is too old to play the title role.

will-gluckHowever that doesn’t mean they don’t want to make the movie anymore, as while it’s lost its star, it’s gained a director. Deadline reports that Will Gluck (Easy A, Friends With Benefits) is in talks to direct what’s being called ‘a broad-based re-imagining’ of the classic Broadway musical Annie, which brings the story into the modern day. Gluck will also revise the film’s screenplay, which was written by Emma Thompson and rewritten by Aline Brosh McKenna.

Next up is to find an actress to play Annie now that 12-year-old Willow Smith is too ancient for the role.

The Annie musical is about an orphan who gets the chance to live with the fabulously rick Daddy Warbucks, but whose chance at happiness is threatened by a scheme to get to multi-billionaire to pay a massive reward. Presumably most of the plot will remain the same, even if the story is moved from the 1930s to the present day.

Will Gluck Developing Skyjack: The Hunt For DB Cooper

June 14, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Director Will Gluck has made his name with comedies such as Easy A and Friends With Benefits, although he’s planning to go in a slightly different direction (although still with comic touches), as Deadline reports that he’s in talks with CBS Films to produce and possibly direct Skyjack: The Hunt for D.B. Cooper.

Cooper hijacked a plane and parachuted out of it over the Pacific Northwest with over $200,000 in cash on November 24, 1971. He was never brought to justice, but was labeled a folk hero. The novel the film will be based on, written by Geoffrey Gray, follows the legend from the perspectives of three different people who claim to be the real D.B. Cooper.

Keith Bunin is writing the script for the project, although there’s no news on when it might shoot.
