Plot Details For George Clooney Sci-fi Flick Tomorrowland Released

March 4, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Brad-BirdFirst it was called 1952 and then when George Clooney came onboard a couple of months ago, it changed its name to Tomorrowland, but director Brad Bird and writer Damon Lindelof have been keeping their cards close to their chest about the plot of their upcoming sci-fi project.

However now Hitfix seems to have found a few brief details about the story of the movie. They says the logline is, ‘A teenage girl, a genius middle-aged man (who was kicked out of Tomorrowland) and a pre-pubescent girl robot attempt to get to and unravel what happened to Tomorrowland, which exists in an alternative dimension, in order to save Earth.’

Previous rumours have suggested it might have something to do with Disneyland’s Tomorrowland or that 1952 refers to sighting of UFOs over Washington DC, which led to conspiracy theories that there had been high level meetings between the US government and aliens. Although there’s still a chance these things will still be tied in somehow, it’s not going to be as straightforward as earlier rumours suggested.

It’s certainly an intriguing logline, even if it raises as many questions as it answers. Hugh Laurie is also attached to play the villain, with a release date of December 19th, 2014 already set.

Brad Bird & George Clooney’s 1952 Becomes Tomorrowland

January 29, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Brad-BirdFor a while now Brad Bird (The Incredibles, Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol) has been working on a secretive sci-fi project known as 1952, based on a script by Damon Lindelof (Prometheus, Lost). More recently George Clooney signed up to star.

Now it’s been revealed that the movie has a new name – Tomorrowland – although we still don’t have any details of the plot. Tomorrowland is, of course, one of the theme lands at each of the Disney theme parks. Each version of the land is different and features numerous attractions that depict views of the future.

Previous reports have suggested it’ll be a big-budget tentpole movie with additional multi-platform applications. There have also been suggestions it’s alien related as 1952 was the year of numerous UFO sightings over Washington DC, leading to speculation over an imminent invasion or the President having high level meetings with extra-terrestrials. It’s also when UFO lore says Project Blue Book started, which is allegedly an attempt to scientifically study and analyse UFO activity and whether they represent a threat.

It’s not known if Brad Bird’s film directly ties into the theme park or any of its attractions, or if they just share a name (some are speculating it could be related to the popular Tomorrowland ride, Space Mountain). A release date of December 19th, 2014 is already set.

Pirates of the Caribbean 5 Coming July 2015, With Dates For Muppets 2 & Clooney Starrer 1952 Also Set

January 15, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

pirates-4-poster2Disney has been firming up its release slate and announcing when it plans to bring us new movies over the next couple of years. While we knew when the likes of Captain America: The Winter Soldier was coming (April 4th 2014 – and it’s been confirmed it’ll be in 3D), the studio has dated several other films.

Pirates Of The Caribbean 5 is now due on July 10th 2015, which means they’ve still got a bit of time to get it ready – which is probably just as well, seeing as it was only yesterday that a new writer was hired to sort out the script.

Also dated is The Muppets 2, which is due to shoot soon in London and will reach cinemas on March 21st 2014. Brad Bird’s 1952, which is set to star George Clooney and concerns the first man to make contact with aliens, also gets a release slot, with a December 19th 2014 date set. The film will be in 3D.

There’s been a bit of shuffling with the Angelina Jolie fairy tale movie Maleficent, which had been due March 2014 but has now slipped back a few months to July 2nd, 2014.

At the moment only the US dates are confirmed, but expect them in the UK around the same time.

George Clooney In Talks For Brad Bird’s Sci-fi 1952

November 10, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

George Clooney is a busy man, but it seems he’s been intrigued by a new project, as Variety reports that he’s in talks to star in the sci-fi drama 1952 for Walt Disney Pictures and director Brad Bird.

News of the movie first broke last June, when screenwriter Damon Lindelof signed an enormous seven-figure deal to write the screenplay. Brad Bird cam onboard to direct around the same time. The story will revolve around a man who makes first contact with aliens on Earth. It’s described as being in the same vein as the 1977 classic Close Encounters of the Third Kind, although the studio is keeping details close its chest.

It isn’t known when production may begin and the studio has stressed that 1952 has not been officially given the green light yet. However, if George Clooney does in fact sign on, you’d expect the go ahead to come pretty quickly.

Brad Bird Directing Damon Lindelof’s Mysterious Sci-fi 1952

May 4, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

For quite a while now, Lost producer and Prometheus scribe Damon Lindelof has been working on a secretive sci-fi project known as 1952. Now Deadline reports the film has a director, with Brad Bird taking it on fresh from the success of his live-action directorial debut, Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol.

Disney is backing the film, which we first heard about last June, when Damon Lindelof signed a seven-figure deal to write the screenplay. No plot details have been revealed, except it will be a big-budget tentpole movie with additional multi-platform applications.

It’s believed the movie has something to do with aliens though, as 1952 was the year of numerous UFO sightings over Washington DC, leading to speculation over an imminent invasion or the President having high level meetings with extra-terrestrials. It’s also when UFO lore says Project Blue Book started, which is allegedly an attempt to scientifically study and analyse UFO activity and whether they represent a threat.

Disney is hoping that Brad Bird will make this his next feature project, with the studio eyeing a 2013 production start. The filmmaker also has 1906 in development, about the devastating San Francisco earthquake, although it isn’t known when that might be moving forward.
