What would Willow think? Xander from Buffy has gone gay (he likes to call himself Nicholas Brendon, but he’ll always be Xander to me, whether he likes it or not).

Here he’s teamed with Jonathan Lisecki, who’s best known as the writer, director and co-star of Gayby. Lisecki takes on the lead role of party planner Bob, who’s looking for his big gay love, especially as everyone he knows seems to be in a relationship. However his insecurities make things difficult, so that he initially can’t see why hunky chef Andy (Brendan) would be interested in him, and even after they start dating he seems sure the fact he’s a bit overweight will inevitably ruin things. Big Gay Love Trailer – Jonathan Lisecki & Nicholas Brendon explore the image-obsessed gay world

I’d wondered what had happened to Big Gay Love. In March 2013 it launched a Kickstarter to help finish the movie, but I hadn’t heard much about it since.

Now comes a trailer ahead of screenings around the US this summer.

Here’s the synopsis: Lovable but insecure party planner Bob (Jonathan Lisecki) is looking for love in the image-obsessed gay world. When romance strikes in the form of hunky chef Andy (Nicholas Brendon), will he be able to handle it?

The current screenings include:

Big Gay Love Starring Jonathan Lisecki & Nicholas Brendon Launches Kickstarter Crowd-funding Campaign

A couple of months ago we reported on the movie Big Gay Love, which was shooting at the time in LA. Now the film is in the can, but it’s not yet complete, so the filmmakers have launched a Kickstarter campaign, hoping to raise $20,000 to help edit the film, add music, sound design, color correction, and make digital prints for festivals.

They’re already nearly halfway there, but if you want to help, there’s still time and plenty of rewards on offer, depending on how much you give.

The film stars Jonathan Lisecki (writer and director of Gayby) and Nicholas Brendon (Buffy The Vampire Slayer). The Kickstarter campaign describes it as, ‘a comedy about a chubby gay man who overcomes discrimination based on his looks to find love on his own terms!

‘The devastating effect of our physique-obsessed culture is explored in the comedy Big Gay Love. In the movie, Bob (played by Jonathan Lisecki of Gayby) appears to have it all – a great job, fabulous friends, and is about to become a first time homebuyer. But his success hasn’t come without a price for Bob has become the chubby gay man everyone adores, but nobody desires. When true love does find Bob in the form of a chef named Andy (Nicholas Brendon), he doubts if the relationship could be real for his years of living in insecurity has gotten the best of him. To keep up appearances with his friends, Bob considers going under the knife to fit in and be perfect. But underneath it all he longs for something more.’

Director Ringo Le told us, “Not only is it a funny film, it’s an important film that deals with body issues in the gay community… We’re hoping to complete our goals on Kickstarter otherwise we can’t get the film out to audiences by Pride month June 2013.”

“People like me don’t usually get to play the lead in a romantic comedy,” says Jonathan Lisecki. “There’s something so nice about the script which was respectful of all human beings. It’s a touching, funny, lovely piece.”

“I’m happy to be part of an independent gay film production that gives a deeper appreciation of diversity. Our cast is amazing and it’s a wonderful story,” adds Nicholas Brendon.

Gayby Director Jonathan Lisecki To Star In Big Gay Love

Jonathan Lisecki got lots of buzz this year for writing and directing Gayby, but now he’s planning to further his acting career by taking the lead role in a new rom-com, Big Gay Love.

It won’t be Lisecki’s first acting job, as he took a role in Gayby and has also been seen in Wuss and The Limbo Room, although as he comments to Queerty, “People like me don’t usually get to play the lead in a romantic comedy.”

The film is ‘a comedy about a portly gay man, Bob, who overcomes discrimination based on his looks to find love on his own terms’. In this case Bob is a chef who has feelings for his boss, played by Buffy’s Nicholas Brendon. However he has to get past his own body-image issues as well as the way others look at him.

The movie is already shooting with Ringo Le (Saigon Love Story) writing and directing. The hope it’ll be ready for next summer’s film festival.
