Emperor Trailer – Tommy Lee Jones turns army general

January 18, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

emperor-tommy-lee-jonesTommy Lee Jones is currently waiting to see if he will win an Oscar for playing for playing Thaddeus Stevens in Lincoln, and it appear he may be trying to line up next year’s Oscar nom with The General.

Peter Webber’s film follows General Douglas MacArthur who found himself in the unusual position of being the de facto ruler of Japan at the end of World War II. However while he’s good at fighting the Japanese, he doesn’t known all that much about their culture, so he brings in an expert, General Bonner Fellers (Matthew Fox), to help determine whether Japanese emperor Hirohito, should be hanged for war crimes. Fellers opinion may be coloured by memories of a relationship with Aya (Eriko Hatsune), a Japanese exchange student he met in the US before Pearl Harbor.

There’s no news on when we might see the film, but you can watch the trailer below.

Tommy Lee Jones Signs On For Emperor

January 18, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Tommy Lee Jones has signed up to star in Emperor for director Burr Steers, joining Matthew Fox in a film inspired by the true events surrounding Japan’s surrender which ended World War II, according to Variety.

Lee Jones will play General Douglas MacArthur, who was the de facto leader of Japan after their surrender. The story centers on MacArthur, who brings in a Japanese expert, General Bonner Fellers (Matthew Fox), to decide whether Emperor Hirohito should be tried and executed as a war criminal. Fellers is also compromised by his love affair with a Japanese exchange student he previously met in the United States.

Producer Gary Foster had this to say about Tommy Lee Jones, “Tommy will bring strength, intelligence, and gravitas to the portrayal of General Douglas MacArthur, a legendary American hero.” Production is slated to begin later this month, on location in Japan and New Zealand.

January 4, 2012 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

With Lost finished, Matthew Fox has been trying to build his film career. This year he’ll appear in both World War Z and I Alex Cross, and now Variety reports that he’s just signed on to a slightly smaller film, snagging the lead in Peter Webber’s movie Emperor.

The inspired by true events film is set in Japan right at the end of World War II. Fox will play General Bonner Fellers, regarded as a Japanese expert and faced with the daunting decision as to whether Emperor Hirohito should be charged with war crimes and hanged for his actions during the global conflict.

David Klass and Vera Blasi are on script duties, while Webber is busy setting up a shoot that will take in both New Zealand and Japan itself.
