Escape Plan (Blu-ray)

March 16, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jim Caviezel, Faran Tahir, Sam Neill
Director: Mikael Hafstrom
Running Time: 115 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: March 17th 2014

If this was 1987, Escape Plan would have been just about the most exciting prospect any popcorn flick fan had ever heard of, but Schwarzenegger and Stallone aren’t quite the box office titans they once were. So if they’re going to make a movie together they need something worthwhile around them and unfortunately Escape Plan doesn’t quite stack up.

Stallone is Ray Breslin a security expert whose job is to get inserted into maximum security prisons and then test their security by trying to break out. He’s asked to do the same for a secret facility where the government keeps the most dangerous people on the planet, who essentially need to be disappeared. However Ray won’t be allowed the back-up of his usual team. [Read more…]

Bad Grandpa Tops The US Box Office, With The Counselor Sinking

October 28, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

jackass-bad-grandpa-posterAs many expected, the power of Jackass won out over the weekend, with Bad Grandpa taking the top spot with $32 million. Although that’s around $20 million less than the opening of Jackass 3-D, the film cost little to make and will prove very profitable.

However there was less cheer for Ridley Scott’s The Counselor, which despite a starry cast and a script by Cormac McCarthy, only placed fourth on the chart with $8.0. Indeed it may have been the problem that the promotion so heavily sold the stars – such as Michael Fassbender, Cameron Diaz and Brad Pitt – that they forgot to tell anyone what the movie was actually about. Bad reviews certainly didn’t help.

While those were the only new openers in the top 10, 12 Years A Slave made its first appeared after expanding onto 123 screens (after just 19 last week), taking $2.1 million to place eighth. It suggest the movie will stay strong as in goes into more cinemas over the coming weeks.

Take a look below for the US box office top 10 for the weekend of October 25th-27th.

Rank Title Weekend Gross (millions) Total Gross to date (millions)
1 Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa $32.0 $32.0
2 Gravity $20.3 $199.8
3 Captain Phillips $11.8 $70.0
4 The Counselor $8.0 $8.0
5 Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs 2 $6.1 $100.6
6 Carrie $5.9 $26.0
7 Escape Plan $4.3 $17.4
8 12 Years A Slave $2.1 $3.4
9 Enough Said $1.5 $13.0
10 Prisoners $1.0 $59.1

Gravity Tops The US Box Office For A Third Week, While Fifth Estate Tanks Badly

October 21, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

gravity-preview-pic1Gravity has continued its impressive box office run, topping the US box office for a third week with $31 million, once more dropping less than 30% from the previous weekend (most films fall around 40-60% each week). It’s made $170 million in North America so far and is expected to gross another $100 million before the end of its run.

It certainly saw off the newcomers. The remake of Carrie was the best new opener with $17 million, which means that while it should still be profitable as it didn’t cost too much to make, it’s on the low end for recent horror releases, which is slightly surprising with Halloween not far away.

Escape Plan came fifth with $9.8 million, showing once more that after his time as Californian Governor, Armie isn’t the box office name he used to be, even if he teams up with Sylvester Stallone – something that in the 80s fans would have died for.

The only other new opener in the top 10 was the Wikileaks drama, The Fifth Estate, which took a dismal $1.7 million. It was a bit of a disaster, as it’s the lowest opening in DreamWorks history, and the worst start for a movie opening at over 1,500 cinemas this year. With bad reviews and mediocre audience reaction, it’s unlikely to do much better in the coming weeks.

Outside the top 10, 12 Years A Slave did well, taking $960,000 on just 19 screens. That’s an incredibly impressive $50,000 per screen, suggesting it’ll do extremely well as it expands nationwide in the coming weeks.

Rank Title Weekend Gross (millions) Total Gross to date (millions)
1 Gravity $31.0 $170.5
2 Captain Phillips $17.3 $53.3
3 Carrie $17.0 $17.0
4 Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs 2 $10.1 $93.1
5 Escape Plan $9.8 $9.8
6 Prisoners $2.0 $57.2
7 Enough Said $1.8 $10.7
8 The Fifth Estate $1.7 $1.7
9 Runner Runner $1.6 $17.5
10 Insidious Chapter 2 $1.5 $80.9
