There’s been a bit of consternation in the last week after it initially looked like Marvel was bringing a couple of LGBT characters into its film universe when scenes from Black Panther were screened that suggested two of the women were interested in one another, only for them to reveal that no, they’re not.
However, there’s an outside chance that the Marvel universe already has a gay character, but we just don’t know it yet.
Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2 director James Gunn was asked about bringing a gay character into the franchise. He replied, “Absolutely. I would love to be able to. We might have already done that. I say watch the movie. Check it out. See what you think.”
When asked to clarify what he meant – as those who’ve Vol. 2 have suggested there’s little to suggest any of the characters are LGBT, Digital Spy reports Gunn saying, “What I meant to say is this: There are a lot of gay people in the world. There are a lot of bisexual people in the world. There are a lot of characters in the MCU. We’ve barely gotten to know the sexuality of any of those characters. We know Gamora and Quill are interested in each other. That’s about the only sexual relationship that exists within the Guardians. We know Drax has a past with a wife so he’s got some sort of interest in women. But we don’t really know who’s gay and who’s not. It could be any of them.”
This could just be Gunn speculating or inviting people to interpret what’s going on – e.g. was the relationship between Rocket Raccoon and Groot in the first film not purely friends? – or whether he has plans for the third movie he’s just officially signed on to write and direct. We will have to wait and see.
