John Carter White Ape Fight Sneak Peek

February 27, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

One of the centrepieces of the John Carter marketing push has been a big battle between the title character and what are being referred to as ‘white apes’ (that’s what they were called in Edgar Rice Burroughs original stories), which are impressively ugly, six-limbed behemoths that want to tear Carter to bits. Now an extended sneak peak at the effects filled battle has popped up online, which is well worth a look, and not just for the fight-scene itself, as it also includes a lot of very cool footage from a film that’s starting to get some really strong buzz (not least because it seems to be an entire movie dedicated to keeping Taylor Kitsch as scantily clad as possible). The film hits cinemas on March 9th.

John Carter: An Introduction Featurette

February 14, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It’s just a few short weeks until John Carter hits cinemas on March 9th, and now a short but fairly informative featurette has popped up online to give us a bit of an intro to the movie for those who aren’t clued into Edgar Rice Burrough’s classic characters. It certainly looks like filmmakering on a massive scale, but whether Andrew Stanton has managed to make this year’s first true blockbuster is yet to be seen.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘John Carter tells the tale of war-weary, former military captain John Carter, who is inexplicably transported to Mars where he becomes reluctantly involved in a conflict of epic proportions between the inhabitants of the planet. John Carter – the newest movie from Academy Award®–winning filmmaker Andrew Stanton is an action adventure story set on Barsoom, the exotic and mysterious planet we know as Mars. Based on the classic novel by Edgar Rice Burroughs, creator of Tarzan, John Carter is the story which inspired many of the most imaginative and well known Hollywood movies, past and present. Next year will mark the 100th anniversary of the John Carter character, first created in the Edgar Rice Burroughs novel.’

Three New John Carter Banners

December 3, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

I have a feeling Disney has decided we’re going to get excited about John Carter whether we want to or not, and they’re going to inundate us with stuff to try and ensure that happens. After the trailer earlier this week, now three rather cool new banners have arrived. The film is out March 9th. John Carter tells the tale of war-weary, former military captain John Carter, who is inexplicably transported to Mars where he becomes reluctantly involved in a conflict of epic proportions between the inhabitants of the planet.

New John Carter Trailer – Taylor Kitsch enters a Martian world

November 30, 2011 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Video: John Carter trailer (MSN Exclusive)After a rather fuzzy, watermarked version arrived yesterday afternoon, the full, proper John Carter trailer has arrived, and it’s likely to get people a lot more excited that they might have thought. The first teaser made the film look a little cheesy, but this trailer is a whole new ball game, with a much more interesting, fully realised Martian world. Here’s the synopsis: ‘

New John Carter Poster Surfaces

November 29, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

Disney really is pushing John Carter hard now, with several new pics released in the last few week, another trailer arriving this Thursday and now Apple debuting a new poster for the movie. It’s a bit retro to be honest, and wouldn’t have been out of place on a 1970s paperback – but Disney will be hoping that it helps get people excited about their $200 million sci-fi gamble, which hit cinemas next March.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘From Academy Award-winning filmmaker Andrew Stanton comes John Carter–a sweeping action-adventure set on the mysterious and exotic planet of Barsoom (Mars). John Carter is based on a classic novel by Edgar Rice Burroughs, whose highly imaginative adventures served as inspiration for many filmmakers, both past and present. The film tells the story of war-weary, former military captain John Carter (Taylor Kitsch), who is inexplicably transported to Mars where he becomes reluctantly embroiled in a conflict of epic proportions amongst the inhabitants of the planet, including Tars Tarkas (Willem Dafoe) and the captivating Princess Dejah Thoris (Lynn Collins). In a world on the brink of collapse, Carter rediscovers his humanity when he realizes that the survival of Barsoom and its people rests in his hands.’

New Pic From John Carter

November 24, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

With Disney’s $200 million gamble, John Carter, due out in March, the studio only has a few months to hype up the movies into a must see event (which at the moment it doesn’t really seem like). To help keep it in people’s mind, a new picture has been released (via EW), featuring Taylor Kitsch’s title character facing off against a giant white ape-type thing. To be honest it all looks a bit Conan meets Star Wars.

Director Andrew Stanton says about the creatures, “No, they’re sort of an oversized gorilla in the books, and they’re kind of ubiquitous. They’re littered everywhere through at least the first several novels. They were always cool, just from a visceral standpoint, [but] they don’t really have a narrative function in the first book. So what we did is we made the White Apes a formidable creature that you kind of hear about throughout the movie, but you never really witness. There’s a subtle sense of anticipation for what these things might be like. Then Michael Kutsche — who did a lot of the designs on [the Johnny Depp movie] Alice in Wonderland – came up with this design on his own, for just their scale. He made them nocturnal, almost like moles — they stopped using their eyes, and just had a heightened sense of smell. We just love that. We needed a scene where Carter was going have to get out of his execution sentence in order to move the story forward, and we thought what better than having to go up against this formidable creature?”

There are plenty of other creatures the film will be bringing us too, and I’d expect Disney will be introducing us to them soon. The problem with the first trailer was that while John Carter is a sci-fi fantasy, there didn’t seems to be much that made the movie special, so showing off the special effects and the whole world of Mars would probably be a good plan.
