October 11, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

A new poster has arrived featuring a close-up look at Hugh Jackman as Jean Valjean in the upcoming movie version of the musical Les Miserables.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Les Misérables is the motion-picture adaptation of the beloved global stage sensation seen by more than 60 million people in 42 countries and in 21 languages around the globe and still breaking box-office records everywhere in its 27th year. Helmed by The King’s Speech’s Academy Award®-winning director, Tom Hooper, the Working Title/Cameron Mackintosh production stars Hugh Jackman, Oscar® winner Russell Crowe, Anne Hathaway, Amanda Seyfried, Eddie Redmayne, Aaron Tveit, Samantha Barks, with Helena Bonham Carter and Sacha Baron Cohen.

‘Set against the backdrop of 19th-century France, Les Misérables tells an enthralling story of broken dreams and unrequited love, passion, sacrifice and redemption—a timeless testament to the survival of the human spirit. Jackman plays ex-prisoner Jean Valjean, hunted for decades by the ruthless policeman Javert (Crowe) after he breaks parole. When Valjean agrees to care for factory worker Fantine’s (Hathaway) young daughter, Cosette, their lives change forever.

‘In January 2012, the world’s longest-running musical brings its power to the big screen in Tom Hooper’s sweeping and spectacular interpretation of Victor Hugo’s epic tale. With international superstars and beloved songs—including “I Dreamed a Dream,” “Bring Him Home,” “One Day More” and “On My Own”—Les Misérables, the show of shows, is now reborn as the cinematic musical experience of a lifetime.’

New Poster For Les Miserables Arrives – A fresh take on the classic image of Cosette

September 24, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Ever since the musical version of Les Miserables was first staged, it’s been promoted with an image of the young character Cosette, based on Emile Bayard’s original 19th Century illustration for Victor Hugo’s novel (you can see that below).

Now that the film version of the musical is on its way this Christmas, a new poster has been released which keeps the image of Cosette’s face, but updates it with the actress who plays the child (Isabelle) version of the character, before she grows up into the form of Amanda Seyfried.

It’s a clever way to merge the old and new, and assure fans of the stage version that not everything is being changed for the film.

Here’s the official synopsis: ‘Les Misérables is the motion-picture adaptation of the beloved global stage sensation seen by more than 60 million people in 42 countries and in 21 languages around the globe and still breaking box-office records everywhere in its 27th year. Les Miserables Extended Behind-The-Scenes Peek

September 20, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

After years trying to get it off the ground, the musical version of Les Miserables is finally heading for the big screen and it’ll be here this Christmas. However it’s slightly unusual, as while musicals normally having all the singing completed in a studio before the actors head to the set, director Tom Hooper (The King’s Speech) decided to get everyone to sing live. It was a brave decision, and now a new featurette has popped up online focussing on this aspect of the production. It certainly sounds like it could really make a difference to the film, but we’ll have to wait until December to truly find out. Take a look at the featurette above.

Les Miserables Gets Gossip Girl’s Aaron Tveit

January 18, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

After years in development, a film of the Les Miserables musical is about to go into production, with King’s Speech helmer Tom Hooper at the helm. The cast has been growing, with Hugh Jackman and Russell Crowe as Jean Valjean and Inspector Javert, and Anne Hathaway, Amanda Seyfried and Eddie Redmayne also along for the ride.

Now a the movie has added a revolutionary in the rather cute form of Gossip Girl’s Aaron Tveit has boarded the cast, according to THR. He’s set to play Enjolras, a character who leads the student revolution. While best known for Gossip Girl, Tveit does have some Broadway experience, so hopefully his voice will be up to scratcj.

Sacha Baron Cohen and Helena Bonham Carter are also rumored to be in talks for the film, although their involvement hasn’t been confirmed. It’s turning into a great cast, and hopefully Hooper’s the man who can do the musical justice. It’s due in cinemas at the end of this year.

Sacha Baron Cohen On For Les Miserables?

December 9, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

It’s yet to be confirmed, but it appears Sacha Baron Cohen may star in the musical adaptation of Les Miserables. The note of caution is because the info come from The Sun, which isn’t always 100% accurate with its film casting scoop (and that’s being charitable).

However assuming the info is corrent, Cohen will play the villainous innkeeper Thenardier, a role previously rumoured for Geoffrey Rush. Helena Bonham Carter is reportedly already onboard as his Thenadier’s wife, with the duo delighting in conning their customers. They also take in young Cosette, promising to take care of her in return for payment from her mother (Anne Hathaway). Howeve they turn the girl into a household slave instead. The film’s hero, Jean Valjean (Hugh Jackman), isn’t impressed with this and sets out to rescue the girl.

King’s Speech director Tom Hooper hopes to start shooting in February on the long-gestating project.

And if you’re wondering if Sacha can sing, he’s already shown off his pipes to good effect in Sweeney Todd.

Anne Hathaway Signs On For Les Mis

October 22, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

A few weeks ago we reported on rumours that Anne Hathaway was being sought for the movie version of Les Miserables at the request of Hugh Jackman, who’s onboard to play Jean Valjean. Now Deadline reports Hathaway has signed up for the movie, to portray Fantine.

Based on the Victor Hugo novel, Les Miserables centres on Jean Valjean, a prisoner who is on the run, with a dogged policeman named Javert (Russell Crowe) spending years tracking him down during the French Revolution. Fantine meanwhile is an unwed mother whose life has become dedicated to providing for her child, but whose situation gets ever worse as she tries to do just that, and whose story becomes intertwined with that of Valjean. She’s also the character who gets to sing I Dreamed A Dream, which of course was turned into a hit by Susan Boyle.

Tom Hooper (The King’s Speech) is directing Les Miserables from a screenplay by William Nicholson. Shooting is expected to start in the next few months, with Jackman making Les Mis before he goes to work on The Wolverine.
