Is Christoph Waltz Eyed Being For Pirates of the Caribbean 5?

December 2, 2013 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

christoph-waltzPirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales has taken far longer to put together than originally planned, but it seems it’s now moving forward once more, and if the Daily Mail is to be believed, they’re starting to pull together the cast who’ll join Johnny Depp as Jack Sparrow.

Keith Richards will apparently return as the Jack’s father, the pirate Captain Teague. He seems to be getting an expanded role, teaming up with Jack to battle Captain Brand in a search for a mythical trident. Django Unchained’s Christoph Waltz is reportedly being eyed to take on the villainous Brand.

Teague is said to hold valuable information about the trident, while the ghost of Captain Brand wants to use the weapon on Jack to exact revenge, believing that Sparrow is responsible for turning his brother Eric to a life of piracy, which ultimately ended in his death.

Jack will apparently get a love interest in the form of Barbosa’s daughter Carina Smyth, who is believed to be a witch but is actually just am accomplished astronomer. Geoffrey Rush will also be back as Barbossa.

None of this has been confirmed by Disney at this stage.

Pirates of the Caribbean 5 Delayed Beyond Summer 2015, But The First Plot Details Emerge

September 11, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

pirates-4-poster2After high-profile flops like The Lone Ranger and John Carter, Disney has become more nervous about making mega-budget (non-Marvel) movies, and it seems that even extends to the mighty Pirates Of The Caribbean franchise.

Just a week after the directors revealed the fifth Pirates movie is due to be called Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, Disney has delayed the movie, apparently due to issues with the script. Originally slated for release July 2015, it is now being pushed back from the summer, although there’s no news if that means it’s be out later in 2015, or if it will end up on the 2016 schedule.

It moves Pirates 5 out of an already crowded schedule of massively anticipated movies, which include Disney’s Star Wars VII and The Avengers 2, along with the Batman & Superman mash-up.

Bleeding Cool also has what it says are the first plot details, saying that ‘there’s going to be a new female lead, a sparring partner for Jack Sparrow. She’s nothing like him, mind you – despite being suspected of witchcraft, she’s actually a woman of science… As for witches, they’re central to whole conceit.’

There’ll also be a ghost who’ll have a main role, ‘It’s this character, a former member of the British military now sided with Barbossa on a revenge mission, that gives the film its title.’

The film will get a new young male and female lead, ‘a couple of pretty young Brits from farming families’.

Pirates Of The Caribbean 5 Will Be ‘Dead Men Tell No Tales’

August 24, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

pirates-4-poster2When Pirates Of The Caribbean: At World’s End was released, it was said Disney wanted to make a fifth film as soon as possible, but with the script taking longer than expected, Johnny Depp’s busy schedule and a change of director, it’s taken a while to get it ready.

However things are now moving forward with directors Joachim Rø and Espen Sandberg (the Oscar-winning duo behind the international thriller Kon-Tiki), and reports that it’s likely to start shooting early next year. A July 10th, 2015 release is already set.

However nobody has known what it was going to be called, but now the directors have let it slip in an interview with This Is Infamous. They told the site it will be called Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales. It its cue from the original Disneyland theme park attraction upon which it’s based, as Dead Men Tell No Tales has been the introduction on the Pirates ride at Disneyland since it first debuted in 1967.

There’s still no info on what the exact plot is though. The directors did, however, reveal that this latest chapter will serve as a stand-alone adventure while tying into the overall mythology of the franchise as it currently stands.

Kon-Tiki Directors Espen Sandberg & Joachim Ronning Land Pirates Of The Caribbean 5

May 30, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Joachim-Ronning-Espen-SandbergAfter the Oscar-nominated success of Kon-Tiki, Hollywood got very interested in filmmakers Espen Sandberg and Joachim Rønning. Now they’ve landed a huge gig, as they’re in negotiations to direct Pirates of the Caribbean 5, according to Deadline.

Earlier this month it was reported that the directors were among the front runners for the job, along with Rupert Sanders (Snow White and the Huntsman) and Fredrik Bond (The Necessary Death of Charlie Countryman).

Johnny Depp is set to return as Captain Jack Sparrow, although no other cast members have been confirmed yet. Both Johnny Depp and producer Jerry Bruckheimer signed off on the directing duo, with a deal expected to be finalised quickly, so that the filmmakers can get preparations under way for a January 2014 start of principal photography.

They’ll work from a script by Jeff Nathanson (Men in Black 3, Tower Heist), although no story details have been confirmed at this time.

Joining the Pirates franchise has meant Espen Sandberg and Joachim Rønning have had to step away from Spectral, with Legendary already moving quickly to replace them on the supernatural thriller with commercials director Nic Mathieu.

With Lone Ranger in cinemas in a few months time, it appears Disney and producer Jerry Bruckheimer are starting to move their attention back to Pirates Of The Caribbean 5. Deadline reports that they’ve now narrowed down the list of those they’d like to direct down to Rupert Sanders (Snow White and the Huntsman), Fredrik Bond (The Necessary Death of Charlie Countryman), and the duo of Espen Sandberg and Joachim Rønning (Kon-Tiki).

Fredrik Bond is currently said to be the favourite of Jerry Bruckheimer, although Espen Sandberg and Joachim Rønning’s names are being mentioned more often, with Rupert Sanders getting plenty of buzz as well. The studio is expected to make a final decision within the next few weeks, so that production can get under way in either late 2013 or early 2014.

Jeff Nathanson was is currently working on the script, having taken over from Terry Rossio. The film is currently due July 10th, 2015 and stars Johnny Depp.

Pirates of the Caribbean 5 Coming July 2015, With Dates For Muppets 2 & Clooney Starrer 1952 Also Set

January 15, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

pirates-4-poster2Disney has been firming up its release slate and announcing when it plans to bring us new movies over the next couple of years. While we knew when the likes of Captain America: The Winter Soldier was coming (April 4th 2014 – and it’s been confirmed it’ll be in 3D), the studio has dated several other films.

Pirates Of The Caribbean 5 is now due on July 10th 2015, which means they’ve still got a bit of time to get it ready – which is probably just as well, seeing as it was only yesterday that a new writer was hired to sort out the script.

Also dated is The Muppets 2, which is due to shoot soon in London and will reach cinemas on March 21st 2014. Brad Bird’s 1952, which is set to star George Clooney and concerns the first man to make contact with aliens, also gets a release slot, with a December 19th 2014 date set. The film will be in 3D.

There’s been a bit of shuffling with the Angelina Jolie fairy tale movie Maleficent, which had been due March 2014 but has now slipped back a few months to July 2nd, 2014.

At the moment only the US dates are confirmed, but expect them in the UK around the same time.

Pirates of the Caribbean 5 Gets Writer Jeff Nathanson

January 14, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

pirates-4-poster2After the release of Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, Disney suggested they wanted to get a fifth movie into production as quickly as possible. However with Johnny Depp and producer Jerry Bruckheimer busy with Lone Raner, Pirates 5 has slightly been on the back burner.

However now its gearing up again, with Variety reporting that Jeff Nathanson (Tower Heist) has been hired to work on the screenplay. Back in January 2011, five months before On Stranger Tides was released, Terry Rossio signed up to write the Pirates of the Caribbean 5 screenplay (Rossio co-wrote the first four film with Ted Elliott, who stepped away from the fifth adventure). It isn’t known if Jeff Nathanson is starting from scratch, or if he’s working from Terry Rossio’s earlier script.

Nathanson has also worked on the likes of Rush Hour 2, Catch Me If You Can, The Terminal, Rush Hour 3, and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.

Johnny Depp has loosely agreed to return as Jack Sparrow – as long as the script is good enough.
