Josh Thomas Says His Great, Gay-Themed Show Please Like Me Has Ended With Season 4

February 5, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Please Like Me has become one of those shows that’s beloved of everyone who’s seen it – but unfortunately that’s far fewer people than it ought to be. While it airs on normal TV in its native Australia, in the US it was hidden on Pivot, and when that went offline, it switched across to Hulu for its fourth season. In the UK it’s only been available through Amazon Prime Video, and even then it took it three years to get there and comparatively few have heard of it.

However, those who know and love it will be sad to hear that its creator and star, Josh Thomas, has revealed that the recent Season 4 will be the series last. He posted on Twitter, “We have decided Season 4 #PleaseLikeMe is the last. I’ve loved making this show for you all so much. Thank you.” You can take a look at the full statement he released below.

It’s a surprise to many, as just a few weeks ago Hulu was promoting the show at the Television Critics Association’s winter press tour. However, even at that point there was uncertainty about whether there would be any more. For example, co-star Emily Barclay commented, “I would be surprised if this was the end of Please Like Me, whether it was a different form or incarnation. I don’t know what that means or what that would look like. Maybe that’s wishful thinking. But it doesn’t feel to me like that’s the end of the show.”

Sadly though it look like it will be.

Please Like Me follows young Josh, who at the start of show left his girlfriend and came out as gay, with the series charting his loves and relationship, as well as his sometimes difficult relationship with his parents (one of whom has bipolar disorder), and the lives of his friends. It’s been praised by many, including us, for its sweet nerdiness and its ability to be genuinely funny while also feeling true to how young people are.

Many will be sad to see it go, but Thomas is right in that ending it now it ensures it won’t outstay its welcome. [Read more…]

Please Like Me Finally Arrives In The UK, & Josh Thomas Announces Season 4 Is Coming Soon

July 9, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

please-like-me-s3-slide2Josh Thomas’ gay-themed Aussie show Please Like Me has gained huge amounts of praise around the world, winning numerous awards and gathering a cult following in many countries (including the likes of Lena Dunham). However, as we noted in our review of Seasons 1 and 2, it’s been very difficult to watch it in the UK. Despite the plaudits, no British TV channel had picked it up.

Thankfully though, that’s now changing, as Amazon has announced that the first three seasons of the comedy drama series are now available on Amazon Prime Video in the UK, following a deal they’ve done with Avalon Distribution. It means that UK audiences will now be able to catch up on the adventures of Thomas’ alter ego, Josh, who gets dumped by his girlfriend and then comes out as gay. The show follows his rather awkward romantic entanglements (including with the handsome but unusual Arnold), as well his his issues with his mother’s mental illness and father’s new wife and child. That’s not to mention his relationship with straight housemate and friend, Tom.

If you haven’t seen it, it’s well worth catching up with the show, and now those in the UK with a Prime Video subscription can do just that. It’s just as well too, as Josh Thomas has announced that production has begun on Season 4, revealing the news with the cake based Instagram pic you can see below. Hopefully that will also come to Prime Video, and it’s already been revealed it’ll be available in the US from November 10th via Pivot. [Read more…]
