The Wolverine Tops The US Box Office With $55 Million

July 28, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

wolverine-teaser-poster2The Wolverine has taken the US box office crown with a $55 million opening. While that’s not a bad take, and certainly better than recent disappointments such as The Lone Ranger and Pacific Rim, it’s still being seen as rather soft, as most had expected it to take $60 million plus.

There was more to cheer globally though as the mutant movie took an impressive $141 million, suggesting that even if it doesn’t become a huge hit in North America, it’ll still be a massive success around the globe. With the film costing $120 million – versus the $200 million plus of other recent failures – it may suggest Hollywood needs to rethink how much it spends on some of its movies.

The only other film making its first appearance in the top 10 is Fruitvale Station, which added 1,000 screens (up from 34 screen last weekend), allowing it to take $4.6 million, placing it in 10th spot on the chart. The film, based on the true story of Oscar Grant, has got massive amounts of attention in the US following the aquittal of George Zimmerman, who shot and killed African-American Trayvon Martin, helping Fruitvale Station to find a larger audience than it might have otherwise.

Take a look below for the US box office top 10 for the weekend of July 26th-28th.

Rank Title Weekend Gross (millions) Total Gross to date (millions)
1 The Wolverine $55.0 $55.0
2 The Conjuring $22.1 $83.8
3 Despicable Me 2 $16.0 $306.4
4 Turbo $13.3 $55.7
5 Grown Ups 2 $11.5 $101.6
6 Red 2 $9.4 $35.0
7 Pacific Rim $7.5 $84.0
8 The Heat $6.8 $141.2

The Conjuring Tops The US Box Office, With Turbo & RIPD Faltering

July 22, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

conjuring-posterLast week a sequel to The Conjuring was announced, which suggested Warner Bros had an inkling it would do well. They were right, as the James Wan directed horror movie, which cost just $20 million to make, grossed $41 million in its first three days in cinemas to top the US box office.

It’s the top opening ever for an original R-rated horror movie, and more than the far pricier Pacific Rim took in its first weekend last week.

All the other new openers cost a lot more to make, but none of them made much of a dent in the box office. DreamWorks Animation’s Turbo took the number three spot with $21.5 million and $31.2 million since it opened last Wednesday. The company will be hoping that good word of mouth will help keep the gross up over the coming weeks, but it’s not an amazing start, especially as it opened behind the third weekend of Despicable Me 3.

Indeed it was a bad weekend for Ryan Reynolds all round, as not only does he voice the title character in Turbo, but he also stars in R.I.P.D., which became the summer’s latest big budget bomb, grossing a paltry $12 million in its first weekend. As it cost $130 million to make, it’s going to end up losing an awful lot of cash.

R.I.P.D. placed seventh on the chart, and while Red 2 did a little better than that, with a fifth place finish and an $18.5 million gross it still didn’t have a lot to cheer. That’s lower than the $21 million the first film opened to. That earlier film became a word of mouth hit, which should have ensured a good opening gross for a sequel, but it seem audiences simply aren’t interested.

Take a look below for the US box office top 10 for the weekend of July 19th-21st.

Rank Title Weekend Gross (millions) Total Gross to date (millions)
1 The Conjuring $41.5 $41.5
2 Despicable Me 2 $25.0 $276.1
3 Turbo $21.5 $31.2
4 Grown Ups 2 $20.0 $79.5
5 Red 2 $18.5 $18.5
6 Pacific Rim $15.9 $68.2
7 R.I.P.D. $12.7 $12.7
8 The Heat $9.3 $129.2
9 World War Z $5.2 $186.9
10 Monsters University $5.0 $248.9

R.I.P.D Featurette – Inside the Rest In Peace Department with Ryan Reynolds

July 5, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

To be honest, I’d be surprised if R.I.P.D. became a big hit, as despite a summer release slot in the US on July 19th (it doesn’t get until September 20th) and the presence of Ryan Reynolds and Jeff Bridges, plus a fun sounding plot, it doesn’t seem like Universal is pushing it too hard.

However a new featurette has now popped up online, which does make the movie look like it might be pretty entertaining.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Jeff Bridges and Ryan Reynolds headline the supernatural action-adventure R.I.P.D. as two undead cops dispatched by the otherworldly Rest In Peace Department to protect our world from an increasingly destructive array of creatures who refuse to move peacefully to the other side. R.I.P.D. is directed by Robert Schwentke (Red) and produced by Neal H. Moritz (the Fast and Furious series, I Am Legend), Michael Fottrell and Mike Richardson.’ [Read more…]

R.I.P.D. Trailer – Ryan Reynolds & Jeff Bridges are dead cops!

April 18, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

R.I.P.D. was filmed over 18 months ago, but it’s only now that we’re getting the first trailer, ahead of its summer release. It certainly looks a bit nuts, but could be a lot of fun.

Great New Posters For 300 Rise Of An Empire, Oldboy & R.I.P.D.

April 17, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

300-rise-of-an-empire-poster1
New posters have emerged for three films that have slightly got lost in the shuffle as the studio concentrate on their biggest summer tentpole flicks. Even so, there are a lot of people out there waiting for 300: Rise Of An Empire, R.I.P.D. and Spike Lee’s remake of Oldboy.

300 director Zack Snyder tweeted the Rise Of An Empire poster (he’s producing and writing this time around, with Noam Murro directing). The follow-up stars Sullivan Stapleton as General Themistokles, who attempts to unite all of Greece in battle against the evil Persian ruler Xerxes (Rodrigo Santoro). The film hits cinemas this August.

R.I.P.D. follows a recently killed beat cop (Ryan Reynolds) who joins the Rest In Peace Department, where undead police patrol the underworld. He agrees to 100 years service in return for a shot at getting the guy who killed him, and is teamed with an old gunslinger (Jeff Bridges), who’s been dead hundreds of years. Robert Luketic directs, with a July US release date set (there’s no official UK date yet).

Oldboy follows an advertising executive (Josh Brolin) who is kidnapped and held hostage for 20 years in solitary confinement without any indication of his captor’s motive. When he is inexplicably released, he embarks on an obsessive mission to discover who orchestrated his bizarre and torturous punishment, only to find he is still trapped in a web of conspiracy and torment. Elizabeth Olsen, Sharlto Copley and Samuel L. Jackson also star. It’ll be in cinemas this autumn.

First Pic Of Ryan Reynolds & Jeff Bridges In R.I.P.D. Arrives

April 12, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

ripd-pic1
Back in 2011 Ryan Reynolds and Jeff Bridges headed to the set to shoot R.I.P.D., but it’s been in post-production for a long time, with the release still a couple of months away (it’s set to hit US cinemas on July 19th). Now the first image from the film has arrived via the print edition of EW (scan via Bloody Disgusting), showing Bridges and Reynolds looking armed and serious.

The plot revolves around two dead cops, one recently passed away (Reynolds) and the other a gunslinger (Bridges) who’s been dead for hundreds of years. They work in the Rest in Peace department, which is essentially the divine police department of the dead. The new R.I.P.D. member has agreed to give 100 years service in return for a shot at finding out who killed him.

Robert Schwentke directs from a screenplay by Phil Hay and Matt Manfredi, which is adapted from the comic book series created by Peter M. Lenkov. Hopefully we really will get to see it later this year.
