Is Indiana Jones 5 Coming To Secure Harrison Ford For Star Wars 7?

October 30, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

harrison-fordHarrison Ford has made it clear he’d like to make a fifth Indiana Jones movie, but has seemed more ambivalent about returning to Star Wars. Now rumours suggest that in order to agree to become Han Solo once more, he’s got Lucasfilm to put Indy 5 into active development.

Nothing has been confirmed (and this may all turn out to be false) but Harrison Ford apparently wanted Disney to commit to making Indiana Jones 5 as a part of his Star Wars deal. Disney wasn’t prepared to sign up for that, but they have apparently agreed to develop a treatment for the next Indy sequel by the end of 2014 and, if all parties are satisfied with the story, they will move forward for a 2016 release.

Ford is also said to have approved his Han Solo character arc that stretches beyond Star Wars: Episode VII, and led to the actor agreeing to a multi-picture deal.

There are stumbling blocks to Indiana Jones 5, not least that Paramount Pictures owns the rights to that franchise, while Disney own Lucasfilm. While a co-production is possible, it’s not know if either studio is will to get in bed with the other.

Zac Efron & Ryan Gosling Rumoured For Star Wars Episode VII

July 25, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Zac Efron for Flaunt magazine

Zac Efron

We’d take this with a pinch of salt at the moment, as it’s merely one of many rumours swirling around the upcoming Star Wars: Episode VII. However, Latino Review is suggesting that Zac Efron and Ryan Gosling are being sought for the film. The site previously suggested Leonardo DiCaprio had come in for a meeting about Star Wars, but bailed to do the Robotech movie instead.

It is not known who they might play, but it’s being said that one of the actors has already taken a meeting with Lucasfilm and Disney. The current speculation is that Ryan Gosling is being sought to play Luke Skywalker’s kid, while Zac Efron will play Han Solo’s child.

Disney and Lucasfilm are said to be saving their big Star Wars: Episode VII casting announcements for the D23 Expo, which happens August 9th-11th in Anaheim, California, home of Disneyland. However even that’s speculation at the moment, but with an early 2014 shoot being eyed for a 2015 release, it’s certainly not impossible we’ll find out who’s set to star at the Expo.

Will Star Wars: Episode VII Gross $1.2 Billion?

July 10, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

star-wars-phantom-menace-3d-poster3Star Wars: Episode VII isn’t due out until 2015, but it’s never too early to predict how much money it will make. It may seem pointless trying to work out the film’s gross now, but it’s actually quite important to Disney’s share price. With Lone Ranger possibly losing as much as $150 million for the studio, investors want to know whether the studio has a solid line-up for the future.

Credit Suisse analyst Michael Senno has come up with some numbers, based on the last Star Wars film (which grossed $850 million) and Disney’s success with Marvel, and estimates that Episode VII will make $733 million in profit, with $1.2 billion in global ticket sales and more money coming from merchandising.

Senno also says he thinks The Lone Ranger will only lose $100 million, which it still a big failure, but not as bad as others have been saying.

People’s faith in Disney’s future plans should give the company solace, as a single massive failure can often cause a slump in the share price, but the company has actually managed to gain in value over the past few days, despite Lone Ranger. The thought amongst investors seems to be that with Disney concentrating on relatively safe bets such as Star Wars, Marvel movies and animated efforts, there will be fewer failures such as Lone Ranger and John Carter, and that even if there are a few, overall the company can weather those upsets.

It is all a guess about Episode VII at the moment though, and we’ll have to wait until 2015 to see whether $1.2 billion is even close to the final gross.

Jonathan Rhys Meyers Rumored For Star Wars: Episode VII

May 21, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Jonathan-Rhys-MeyersPersonally I’d take this with a pinch of salt, but Latino Review is suggesting that The Tudors star Jonathan Rhys Meyers is in talks for an major role in Star Wars: Episode VII. If a deal is made, the actor would reunite with his Mission: Impossible III director J.J. Abrams.

No story details have been revealed yet, but Michael Arndt (The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, Toy Story 3) is currently working on the screenplay. We don’t know what role Meyers might play, but it’s possible he’d play the child of Han Solo and Princess Leia, or indeed Luke Skywalker’s son (they’re not sticking to the previously established post Return Of The Jedi mythology, so it’s impossible to narrow it down further).

Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, and Carrie Fisher should all be back. Shooting will begin in early 2014 in the UK.

Star Wars VII Eyes Spring 2014 Shoot, Avatar 2 & 3 May Film Then Too

May 7, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

star-wars-phantom-menace-3d-poster3When Disney bought Lucasfilm they announced Star Wars Episode VII would come in 2015. Now it seems they’re firming up plans, with producer Bryan Burk revealing to Collider, during an interview for Star Trek Into Darkness, that the plan is to shoot early next year.

He says, “We’re progressing on a schedule to hopefully begin next year, or the beginning of next year, and the location is still kind of floating around in the air all depending on script and a whole bunch of other issues. As I just said, everything is kind of a free-flowing thing, and when we feel like the story level on this script and everything is really coming together and schedules are all working and pieces line up, we prowl ahead, and Star Wars will be no different.”

Rumours last week suggested it would shoot in the UK, but Burk’s comments suggest that hasn’t been set in stone. Wherever it films, Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, and Carrie Fisher should all return, so we can catch up with their characters after Return Of The Jedi.

Star Wars isn’t the only much-anticipated movie that’s likely to shoot next year, as in another Star Trek interview, Zoe Saldana told Digital Spy that Avatar 2 & 3 will film then too. She says, “I think that they’re doing a part two and a part three and they’re probably going to shoot it at the same time. Because if we just do two and then wait, I’ll probably be 45 or 50 by the time we get to part three. It takes a long time, it’s a very hard process.”

New Star Wars Film Coming Every Year From 2015

April 18, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

star-wars-phantom-menace-3d-poster3Disney has revealed just what a massive gamble it’s placing on audiences still be excited about Star Wars, as after paying $4 billion for Lucasfilm, it’s now planning on spending hundreds of millions more to release a new movie from the franchise every summer from 2015, continuing for the foreseeable future. Disney boss Alan Horn announced the news at CinemaCon in Las Vegas.

Star Wars: Episode VII will be the first of those movies, and will launch a new trilogy that will be a continuation of the main story told in Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi. The current plan is to bring characters such as Han Solo, Luke Skywalker, and Princess Leia back, with JJ Abrams directing. The main trilogy will alternate every summer with standalone films looking at other parts of the Star Ward universe, the first of which will be released in 2016.

An young Han Solo movie and a film about Boba Fett are rumoured to be in the works, although there’s been no official announcement about there. It is also suspected that Yoda and Jabba the Hutt may get their own movies.

Harrison Ford Reportedly Back For Star War: Episode VII

February 16, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Han-SoloWith Star Wars Episodes VII-IX reportedly following the further adventures of the likes of Han Solo and Luke Skywalker, it’s little surprise Disney has been talking to the original actors to try and get them on board as quickly as possible. However while Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher quickly suggested a willingness, less certain has been Harrison Ford.

However, if Latino Review is to be believed, Ford has now signed on in principle to return as Han Solo. Neither Disney nor Lucasfilm has confirmed this, and to be honest I wouldn’t expect anything official anytime soon (partly because Ford is likely to have script approval and could back out at any time).

In the Star Wars expanded universe novels, Solo married Princess Leia and had three children with her, twins Jaina and Jacen and son Anakin. Anakin sadly dies young, but the twins grow up to be Jedi. It’s not known if the new film will follow any of this plot or if they’re going for something completely new (the suggestion has been that it will be original).

It’s also been rumoured that a spin-off movie based around Han Solo is also in the works, although this would focus on a younger version of the character than we’ve seen before.

JJ Abrams Officially Confirmed To Direct Star Wars VII

January 26, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

jj-abramsYesterday we reported that JJ Abrams was close to signing a deal to direct the next instalment in the Star Wars saga, which Disney hopes to bring to cinemas in 2015. Now that’s been confirmed, with Disney and Lucasfilm issuing a press release making it official.

Incidentally, it’s also being suggested that Abrams will still be involved with Star Trek, acting as a producer of a third film with the chair left open (at the moment at least) for him to direct.

Here’s the press release: J.J. Abrams will direct Star Wars: Episode VII, the first of a new series of Star Wars films to come from Lucasfilm under the leadership of Kathleen Kennedy. Abrams will be directing and Academy Award-winning writer Michael Arndt will write the screenplay.

“It’s very exciting to have J.J. aboard leading the charge as we set off to make a new Star Wars movie,” said Kennedy. “J.J. is the perfect director to helm this. Beyond having such great instincts as a filmmaker, he has an intuitive understanding of this franchise. He understands the essence of the Star Wars experience, and will bring that talent to create an unforgettable motion picture.”

George Lucas went on to say “I’ve consistently been impressed with J.J. as a filmmaker and storyteller. He’s an ideal choice to direct the new Star Wars film and the legacy couldn’t be in better hands.”

“To be a part of the next chapter of the Star Wars saga, to collaborate with Kathy Kennedy and this remarkable group of people, is an absolute honor,” J.J. Abrams said. “I may be even more grateful to George Lucas now than I was as a kid.”

J.J., his longtime producing partner Bryan Burk, and Bad Robot are on board to produce along with Kathleen Kennedy under the Disney | Lucasfilm banner.

Also consulting on the project are Lawrence Kasdan and Simon Kinberg. Kasdan has a long history with Lucasfilm, as screenwriter on The Empire Strikes Back, Raiders of the Lost Ark and Return of the Jedi. Kinberg was writer on Sherlock Holmes and Mr. and Mrs. Smith.

Abrams and his production company Bad Robot have a proven track record of blockbuster movies that feature complex action, heartfelt drama, iconic heroes and fantastic production values with such credits as Star Trek, Super 8, Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol, and this year’s Star Trek Into Darkness. Abrams has worked with Lucasfilm’s preeminent postproduction facilities, Industrial Light & Magic and Skywalker Sound, on all of the feature films he has directed, beginning with Mission: Impossible III. He also created or co-created such acclaimed television series as Felicity, Alias, Lost and Fringe.
And here are some quotes from Star Wars veterans on working with Abrams, taken from the official site:

Visual Effects Supervisor Dennis Muren, ASC, whose credits include the original Star Wars trilogy as well as landmark films such as E.T. and Jurassic Park, also worked with Abrams on Super 8. “He puts everything he has into his work,” said Muren. “He totally immerses himself. He’s got such a visual eye, which is so important to the Star Wars films. It seems that a lot of the same things that were in George when he made the first Star Wars films are also in J.J. I think he’s going to fit into the other movies perfectly, with the energy that J.J. has. We’re kick-starting Star Wars again with dynamite. It will knock people out, including the people who get to work on it. I think it’s a great choice.”

Ben Burtt, responsible for such iconic Star Wars sounds as Darth Vader’s breathing, R2-D2′s beeps and the classic lightsaber, has worked with Abrams as sound designer and sound editor on Star Trek and Super 8. “J.J represents the next generation of filmmakers from those that were making Star Wars when I started,” said Ben Burtt. “When he was a teen, he was a fan of Star Wars, and a great deal of his love for movies came out of his reaction of that first Star Wars film. You feel that he’s already invested so many years in it, and he’s going to propel it forward in a new way. In other words, you’re having a fan who has grown up and developed tremendous directorial skills finding himself at the steering wheel to take the franchise into the next stage. I feel like I’m there watching history turn over from one era to another.”

Matthew Wood, who served as supervising sound editor on Super 8, similarly grew up as a Star Wars fan before working on the films through the prequels. “Working with him, it was so obvious to me that J.J. and I have the same nostalgic love of that era. Now we have someone from that generation who is going to be at the helm of the Star Wars franchise that I’ve known and worked on, so it’s a great circle. Just seeing what he did with Super 8 and capturing those moments, and knowing what was so special about that era, it’s going to speak to a new generation of audience as well.”

JJ Abrams Close To Deal To Direct Star Wars VII

January 25, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

jj-abramsIt seems almost unfair to give the man who’s already in charge of the second biggest sci-fi franchise in history – Star Trek – the job of bringing back the biggest, but it seems that’s what’s going to happen, as THR reports that JJ Abrams is close to signing a deal to direct Disney new instalment in Star Wars saga.

There is no official word from Walt Disney Pictures or Lucasfilm at this time yet, but sources close to the project says it’s happening.

It’s a bit of a turnaround from last November, when Abrams claimed he was not interested in directing the film, saying “Look, Star Wars is one of my favorite movies of all time. I frankly feel that – I almost feel that, in a weird way, the opportunity for whomever it is to direct that movie, it comes with the burden of being that kind of iconic movie and series. I was never a big Star Trek fan growing up, so for me, working on Star Trek didn’t have any of that, you know, almost fatal sacrilege, and so, I am looking forward more then anyone to the next iterations of Star Wars, but I believe I will be going as a paying moviegoer!”

However, Kathleen Kennedy went after J.J. Abrams herself, heavily courting him over a period of time, and it seems her efforts have paid off. Star Wars: Episode VII will debut in May of 2015, with a screenplay by Michael Arndt.

Lawrence Kasdan & Simon Kinberg May Write Star Wars VIII & IX

November 21, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

After spending $4 billion on Lucasfilm, it doesn’t appear Disney is taking a gentle, see show it goes approach to Star Wars. Last week it was revealed that Michael Arndt had signed up to script Star Wars: Episode VII, and now it seems the House Of Mouse wants the scripts for Episodes VIII and IX written at the same time.

Both Deadline and THR report that sources have told them Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back screenwriter and director Lawrence Kasdan has been hired to pen the screenplay for Star Wars: Episode VIII. Kasdan also wrote Return of the Jedi and Raiders of the Lost Ark for Lucasfilm.

Screenwriter Simon Kinberg is likely to cover scripting duties on the final chapter in this upcoming new trilogy, Star Wars: Episode IX. He is best known for his work on X-Men: First Class and the Sherlock Holmes movies starring Robert Downey Jr..

It’s said that both Lawrence Kasdan and Simon Kinberg have already signed on, but Disney will not confirm that news at this time, so take it as a well sourced rumour for now. If all three films are indeed being written at essentially the same time, its likely that the three writers will be collaborating amongst themselves in terms of sorting through George Lucas detailed story notes.

The concurrent writing also has to make you wonder if Disney is planning to shoot the new trilogy back-to-back, which could be the most cost-effective way, and may also help get the original cast back if they know they can do it all at once, rather than running to and from the sets so Disney can make the films for release every two-to-three years. We’ll have to wait and see.
