George Lucas & Kathleen Kennedy Update Us On Star Wars VII

November 10, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

While there have been endless rumours swirling around ever since it was announced a new Star Wars movie was coming and George Lucas had sold the franchise to Disney, there’s been very little that’s official. One of the few things we’ve had from the horse’s mouth – that is, Lucas and Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy – was a video interview that was released on the day the Disney deal was announced.

Now it appears that’s going to be an ongoing thing as a second part of the chat has been released, where they talk about the difficult process of finding a director, as many people are too daunted at the prospect of taking on such an important project. Lucas also talks about what being a ‘creative consultant’ on the new movie actually means. You can take a look at that above.

And in other confirmed Star Wars news, just yesterday it was reported that Michael Arndt (Little Miss Sunshine, Toy Story 3) had written extensive treatments for a new Star Wars trilogy, featuring Luke, Leia and Han Solo as older characters. It wasn’t clear at the time if Arndt would write the actual screenplays, but now it’s been officially confirmed on the unimpeachable source that is StarWars.com. Kennedy and Lucas have had several story conferences with Arndt, and are confident he is the best writer to tackle the next chapter in the series.

Michael Arndt May Write Star Wars VII

November 9, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It’s not surprising that with a new Star Wars movie announced, a lot of people have been jockeying for jobs. But what’s become clearer in the days since it was announced Disney was buying Lucasfilm, is that some people have actually been at work on the movie, in secret, for a while.

One of those is be Oscar-winning Little Mis Sunshine and Toy Story 3 scribe Michael Arndt, with Vulture reporting that he recently turned in a 40-to-50 page treatment outlining his take on the story, which he had been working on for months prior to the Disney/LucasFilm announcement (Deadline says he’s created treatments for three films, based on George Lucas’ ideas). He will likely be at least one of the writers who does work on the actual screenplay – although he has to finish The Hunger Games: Catching Fire first – before shooting begins in 2014.

Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill, and Carrie Fisher have all said they’re open to returning as Han Solo, Luke Skywalker, and Princess Leia, which is good as Arndt treatments revolve around older versions of their characters.

Michael Arndt’s treatment will start going out to top directors such as Steven Spielberg, Brad Bird, and J.J. Abrams. It is not known if any of these top-tier filmmakers have any interest in tackling this massive project (Zack Snyder has apparently already ruled himself out), but Disney wants to make sure all of the big-name directors have had a shot at it. Other filmmakers such as Matthew Vaughn and Colin Trevorrow have been mentioned as contenders.

Is Colin Trevorrow Up To Direct Star Wars VII?

November 7, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

As many predicted, the announcement of a new Star Wars movie has put the rumour mill into overdrive. A couple of days ago we reported that Matthew Vaughn is said to be in talks to helm Star Wars VII, and now we have another name to add to the list, Colin Trevorrow.

He’s not exactly a well known name, but he impressed many with his film Safety Not Guaranteed, which got a lot of praise at Sundance (and won the screenwriting award). Now CeleBuzz says they have to an insider, who’s told them the indie filmmaker met with George Lucas himself to discuss the project several months ago.

Lucas was apparently a fan of Safety Not Guaranteed, and it was enough to put Colin on the list of potential candidates to make this highly-anticipated sequel. However it should be noted that Lucas has already said that now he’s sold Lucasfilm to Disney, he’s not choosing the director. It doesn’t mean Trevorrow is ruled out, just that meeting Lucas is far from saying he’s got the job.

Harrison Ford ‘Open’ To Star Wars VII, And Matthew Vaughn May Direct

November 6, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

From the moment it was announced a new Star Wars film was coming in 2015, it was clear we were going to be hit with vast amounts of speculation, some more informed that others. Today we’ve got two nuggets, one suggesting Harrison Ford may be up for returning to the franchise and the other saying Matthew Vaughn might direct.

We already knew Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher had been tipped off early about the possibility of more Star Wars. Now EW suggests that not only may Hamill and Fisher be back for further adventures in a galaxy far, far way, but Harrison Ford may return too. EW has what they describe as a ‘highly-placed source’ who says, “Harrison is open to the idea of doing the movie and he’s upbeat about it, all three of them are.”

That’s a long way from saying he’ll actually return – and even if he did it could just be a cameo – but it certainly sounds hopeful. As always with Ford though, he won’t enter negotiations until there is a screenplay and a director in place.

Other rumours, this time via Collider, suggest the director part of that equation may already have been decided, as they say Kick-Ass helmer Matthew Vaughn is in talks to direct Star Wars – Episode VII. It’s difficult to know how firm their sources are, although it would explain why Vaughn dropped out of X-Men: Days Of Future Past just a few months before it was due to shoot.

Many had thought there was something a bit unusual about Vaughn’s departure, as the director had seemed so upbeat about the film. It’s also true that if a director drops out late, it’s usually acrimonious and they have nothing to do with the movie afterwards, but they didn’t seem unhappy with Vaughn in the X-Men camp, as he will still produce the movie.

Both Vaughn and Ford and far from certain yet – nothing will be confirmed until it’s officially announced by Disney – but it’s all certainly intriguing.
