The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug Teaser Trailer – Including our first good look at the dragon

June 12, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The teaser trailer for The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug is much what you’d expect. Indeed it was always in danger of seeming exactly like all the promos for the first film, so it makes sure it adds in a few new things, mostly our first looks at Orlando Bloom returning to the role of Legolas, as well as Evangeline Lilly as the elf Tauriel and a decent glimpse of the evil, treasure-loving dragon, Smaug (who’ll be voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch).

Here’s the official synopsis: ‘The second in a trilogy of films adapting the enduringly popular masterpiece “The Hobbit”, by J.R.R. Tolkien, “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug” continues the adventures of the title character Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman) as he journeys with the Wizard Gandalf (Ian McKellen) and thirteen Dwarves, led by Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage) on an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor.

It hits cinemas on December 13th.

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug Teaser Poster Arrives

Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman) will be back on December 13th when The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug hits cinemas.

Now the first poster for the movie has emerged, with Bilbo standing in front of the entrance to the mountain that contains untold amounts of gold, and also the dragon Smaug. Unsurprisingly, this beast is going to cause a lot of trouble for The Hobbit and the band of dwarves he’s travelling with.

We’ve also been promised that the first trailer for the movie will arrive on Tuesday, so look out for that!

Bilbo Finds Treasure In First The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug Image

December 8, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Yesterday the first pic from the final Hobbit Movie, There & Back Again, arrived, showing us the return of Legolas, as well as Luke Evan’s human warrior character, Bard the Bowman. Now EW, has debuted our first look at the second film, The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug, which you can see above.

The image sees Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman), sitting atop of massive pile of gold coins, which as fans of Tolkien’s book will know, is the treasure of the terrifying dragon Smaug (Benedict Cumberbatch).

Writer/producer Philippa Boyens commentes, “The dragon is a huge, wonderful, amazing part of the story, but it doesn’t end there. Everyone can suspect there’s a rather large battle in film three.”

That fight is the Battle of Five Armies, which it would appear is going to be what most of the final film concetrates on, while the second focusses on the attempts to destroy Smaug. The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug opens December 13, 2013, with There & Back Again coming the following summer.

Third Hobbit Movie Gets A Release Date, While The Second Film Is Given A Name

September 1, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

While a couple of months ago it was confirmed The Hobbit was changing from being two movies to three, we didn’t know when the third film would be released, or which of the films was getting a new title. Now we know, as Warner Bros has released a statement, saying that the final film will be titled The Hobbit: There and Back Again (which was previously what the second film was going to be called), and will be released worldwide on July 18th, 2014.

The studio also announced the title of the second installment in the franchise will be The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, and will keep its release date on December 13th, 2013. The first film in the trilogy, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, opens December 14th, 2012.

Dan Fellman, President of Domestic Distribution, Warner Bros. Pictures, stated, “We wanted to have a shorter gap between the second and third films of The Hobbit Trilogy. Opening in July affords us not only the perfect summer tentpole, but fans will have less time to wait for the finale of this epic adventure.”

Some fans will undoubtedly still feel adding a third film is just a cash-grab, but we’ll have to wait and see whether it works.
