Ghost Stories Trailer – Martin Freeman leads the anticipated anthology of horror

January 13, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It got good notices at the London Film Festival, and the stage production it’s based on also gained plenty of fans when it premiered on stage in Liverpool and the West in 2010 (and during another West End run in 2014/2015. A new trailer for Ghost Stories has arrived, promising a rather unusual movie.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Based on Andy Nyman and Jeremy Dyson’s original Olivier nominated stage production, the same team have co-written and directed this adaptation for the big screen.
Starring Martin Freeman, Alex Lawther, Andy Nyman, Paul Whitehouse, and Kobna Holdbrook-Smith

‘Andy Nyman also leads the cast, reprising his role as Professor Goodman alongside Paul Whitehouse (Alice in Wonderland, ‘Harry & Paul’, ‘The Fast Show’), Alex Lawther (‘Black Mirror’, Old Boys, The Imitation Game) and Martin Freeman (The Hobbit franchise, ‘Fargo’, ‘Sherlock’).

‘Phillip Goodman, professor of psychology, arch-skeptic, the one-man ‘belief buster’ – has his rationality tested to the hilt when he receives a letter apparently from beyond the grave. His mentor Charles Cameron, the ‘original’ TV parapsychologist went missing fifteen years before, presumed dead and yet now he writes to Goodman saying that the pair must meet. Cameron, it seems, is still very much alive. And he needs Goodman to find a rational explanation for three stories that have shaken Cameron to his core. As Goodman investigates, he meets three haunted people, each with a tale more frightening, uncanny and inexplicable than the last.

‘GHOST STORIES in cinemas on Friday 13th April 2018.’ [Read more…]

A Great Cast Unites For Some Black Panther Character Posters

November 11, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Thor: Ragnarok may be tearing up the box office at the moment, but Marvel doesn’t want us to forget that it’s just a few months until they’ve got another movie in cinemas that looks like it’s gonna be a winner – Black Panther. To help us get to know the characters, a set of really nice character posters have been released.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Marvel Studios’ “Black Panther” follows T’Challa who, after the death of his father, the King of Wakanda, returns home to the isolated, technologically advanced African nation to succeed to the throne and take his rightful place as king. But when a powerful old enemy reappears, T’Challa’s mettle as king—and Black Panther—is tested when he is drawn into a formidable conflict that puts the fate of Wakanda and the entire world at risk. Faced with treachery and danger, the young king must rally his allies and release the full power of Black Panther to defeat his foes and secure the safety of his people and their way of life.’

The film will be in cinemas next February. Take a look at the character posters below, and click here for the latest trailer. [Read more…]

We first met Chadwick Boseman’s T’Challa / Black Panther in Captain America: Civil War. He’ll be back with his own standalone adventure early next year. Whiskey Tango Foxtrot Red Band Trailer – Tina Fey heads for Afghanistan

February 11, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Whiskey-Tango-Foxtrot-poster1-slideWar and comedy may not seem like easy bedfellows, but Tina Fey is giving it a go with Whiskey Tango Foxtrot. The film, previously known as Taliban Shuffle, is based on a true story of a reporter getting out of their depth in Afghanistan.

Inspired by Kim Barker’s memoir, the film follows her after she first arrived in Kabul as a journalist in 2002. At the time she barely owned a passport, spoke only English and had little idea how to do the ‘Taliban Shuffle’ between Afghanistan and Pakistan. However, her stories about Islamic militants and shaky reconstruction were soon overshadowed by the bigger news in Iraq. But as she delved deeper into Pakistan and Afghanistan, her love for the hapless countries grew, along with her fear for their future stability. Martin Freeman and Margot Robbie co-star.

Whiskey Tango Foxtrot  due out in the UK March 4th 2016. Take a look at the new trailer below.

Martin Freeman Joins Captain America: Civil War In A Mystery Role

May 5, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Martin-FreemanWith his trip to the Lonely Mountain in The Hobbit over, Martin Freeman is heading in a different direction by signing up for Captain America: Civil War, according to an announcement by Marvel.

There’s no news though on who he might be playing, although I think it’s safe to say he won’t be a Halfling with hairy feet, or indeed the companion of a super-genius detective. There’s also no hint on whether his deal is just for a single movie, or if this will set up his character for further films, either on the side of good or of evil.

My bet would be the latter, especially with the recent news that Civil War will directly set up the events of Avengers: Infinity War. Another interesting possibility is that he could also appear in Doctor Strange, which would reunite him with his Sherlock co-star, Benedict Cumberbatch.

In the comics, the Civil War storyline centres around the Superhero Registration Act, which demands that those with super-human powers register themselves with and serve the US government. Steve Rogers is unimpressed by this and rebels against it, while Tony Stark (yep Robert Downey Jr. is back) thinks it’s a good idea. As a result the various heroes split into factions that ending up doing battle with one another.

The movie’s due out May 6th, 2016.

The Hobbit: The Battle Of The Five Armies (Blu-ray Review)

April 22, 2015 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

Starring: Martin Freeman, Richard Armitage, Ian McKellen, Ken Stott, Orlando Bloom
Director: Peter Jackson
Running Time: 144 mins
Certificate: 12
Release Date: April 20th 2015 (UK)

The Battle Of The Five Armies certainly doesn’t want to give you time to settle in. Indeed it appears that in Peter Jackson’s mind he wasn’t making three movies, he was creating one enormously long one, as the final part of the trilogy jumps straight in without even the vaguest hint of a recap or a desire to allow the audience to catch their breath.

Nope, the dragon Smaug is on his way to attack Laketown and only Luke Evan’s Bard the Bowman can stop them. That part of the plot is wrapped up pretty quickly, leaving two full hours for the battle of the title and its build-up. Thorin (Richard Armitage) has holed himself up in his ancestral home in the Misty Mountain, but like his forefathers, having control of the vast dwarvish treasure immediately sends him nuts, with the gold causing him to betray his friends and isolate himself from all those around him. The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies (Cinema Review)

So here we are at the end of Bilbo’s quest, and a journey that Peter Jackson and co started on many years ago to bring Middle Earth to the big screen. I am a huge fan of the Lord of the Rings trilogy (2001-2004) and they are some of my all-time favourite films.

It’s been more than a decade since I went to the cinema to see The Fellowship of the Ring (2001), and at the time I went in with little expectation, just knowing that it was a fantasy film based on a beloved book that had gained legions of fans worldwide. I was captivated by a fully realised world and became attached to the characters and their quest. And then suddenly it ended and I couldn’t believe I had to wait a year for more! [Read more…]
