A Great Cast Unites For Some Black Panther Character Posters

November 11, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Thor: Ragnarok may be tearing up the box office at the moment, but Marvel doesn’t want us to forget that it’s just a few months until they’ve got another movie in cinemas that looks like it’s gonna be a winner – Black Panther. To help us get to know the characters, a set of really nice character posters have been released.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Marvel Studios’ “Black Panther” follows T’Challa who, after the death of his father, the King of Wakanda, returns home to the isolated, technologically advanced African nation to succeed to the throne and take his rightful place as king. But when a powerful old enemy reappears, T’Challa’s mettle as king—and Black Panther—is tested when he is drawn into a formidable conflict that puts the fate of Wakanda and the entire world at risk. Faced with treachery and danger, the young king must rally his allies and release the full power of Black Panther to defeat his foes and secure the safety of his people and their way of life.’

The film will be in cinemas next February. Take a look at the character posters below, and click here for the latest trailer. [Read more…]

Black Panther Teaser Trailer – Take a look at Marvel’s latest adventure

June 10, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

We first met Chadwick Boseman’s T’Challa / Black Panther in Captain America: Civil War. He’ll be back with his own standalone adventure early next year. Marvel has now released the first teaser trailer for the movie, which suggests he’s going to fit in well with their filmic universe as it introduces us to the mysterious world of Wakanda.

Marvel Quashes Rumours Of Black Panther Lesbian Subplot

April 22, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Florence Kasumba (far left) as Ayo in Captain America: Civil War

Florence Kasumba (far left) as Ayo in Captain America: Civil War

Last week we reported on news that an early screening on scenes from Marvel’s upcoming Black Panther had suggested there might be a couple of LGBT characters in the movie. However, after the likes of Vanity Fair praised this seeming step forward for the Comic Book Universe, Marvel has stepped forward to say it’s not happening.

The scene involves a flirtatious exchange between Danai Gurira’s Okuye and Florence Kasumba Ayo, who in the comics serve as the ceremonial guard of Black Panther, and help protect the Wakandan royal family. In the 2016 comic World of Wakanda by Ta-Nehisi Coates, the two women are a couple, leading many to believe the scene shown meant this would be followed through in the movie.

However, a Marvel spokesperson has now stepped forward to say, via Yahoo!, to say ‘the nature of the relationship between Danai Gurira’s Okoye and Florence Kasumba’s Ayo in Black Panther is not a romantic one and that specific love storyline from the comic World of Wakanda was not used as a source’.

Understandably that statement has caused a bit of a backlash on social media. Marvel has already been roundly criticised for not including any openly LGBT characters in its movies. Although the studio, including head honcho Kevin Feige, has suggested that it will probably happen one day, they’ve said it would have to be organic to the story. With Black Panther, it appears they’ve taken two characters who are canonically LGBT and decided just to ignore that side of them. It does seem like a major missed opportunity.

Will Black Panther Make The Marvel Universe A Bit More Gay?

April 18, 2017 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

Florence Kasumba (far left) as Ayo in Captain America: Civil War

Florence Kasumba (far left) as Ayo in Captain America: Civil War

There’s been growing criticism of Marvel and DC’s superhero universes (as well as Fox’s X-Men), that despite a wealth of LGBT characters and stories in the comic books, the movies have stayed resolutely straight. However, now some footage has screened suggested that Marvel will be getting a little more gay with the upcoming Black Panther.

The film will feature Walking Dead star Danai Gurira, Florence Kasumba (who also played the same role in Captain America: Civil War, and Lupita Nyong’o as the Dora Milaje, who in the comics serve as the ceremonial guard of Black Panther, and help protect the Wakandan royal family. The footage that’s screened suggests the movie will be taking some of the storyline of the 2016 comic World of Wakanda by Ta-Nehisi Coates, which focused on the relationship between Ayo and Aneka (played in the movie by Gurira and Kasumba).

Vanity Fair reports that in the footage, ‘We see Gurira’s Okoye and Kasumba’s Ayo swaying rhythmically back in formation with the rest of their team. Okoye eyes Ayo flirtatiously for a long time as the camera pans in on them. Eventually, she says, appreciatively and appraisingly, “You look good.” Ayo responds in kind. Okoye grins and replies, “I know.”’

The magazine suggests this will be a more prominent LGBT storyline than the ‘exclusively gay moment’ in Beauty & The Beast that left many feeling underwhelmed. However, it’s difficult to know whether they’re basing this solely on the scene shown in the preview footage, as if so, we may still be left with something that hints about the characters’ sexuality without actually saying it. We will just have to wait and see, although it is telling that Disney/Marvel chose to screen a scene with very obvious gay undertones as part of the few minutes of footage they showed. It’ll be interesting to see how it plays out in the movie.

Black Panther is due in cinemas February 2018, with Chadwick Boseman reprising the title role which he first played in Captain America: Civil War.

Creed (Blu-ray Review)

May 15, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Michael B. Jordan, Sylvester Stallone, Tessa Thompson, Phylicia Rashad, Tony Bellew
Director: Ryan Coogler
Running Time: 133 mins
Certificate: 12
Release Date: May 16th 2016 (UK)

A few years ago, pretty much everyone thought the Rocky franchise was dead, and that any attempt to resurrect it would be a pointless, awful cash-in. However, 2006’s Rocky Balboa proved there might be a little life left, and now Creed is cashing in on that promise.

Adonis Johnson (Michael B. Jordan) is the illegitimate offspring of Apollo Creed, who’s been trapped in foster homes and juvenile detention until he’s given a chance by Apollo’s widow (Phylicia Rashad), who decides to take him in. She also points him towards someone else from her husband’s past, Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone), who reluctantly agrees to help train the young man and turn him into a boxer. [Read more…]

Michael B. Jordan Up For Marvel’s Black Panther

May 15, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

michael-b-jordanMarvel’s Black Panther will be the first mega-budget comic book movie led by a black superhero (and no, we’re not counting the likes of Blade as mega-budget), and the Comic Book company is certainly keen to pull together a great cast for the movie. Chadwick Boseman has already been seen as the title character in Captain America: Civil War, with Lupita Nyong’o in talks to join him, while Andy Serkis will be the villain and it’s also believed Martin Freeman’s government agent Everett Ross will show up.

Now, THR reports that Michael B. Jordan may be jumping from Fox’s Fantastic Four into Marvel’s own movie’s universe, as he’s now set to appear in Black Panther. It’s not known who he will play, but at least one source says he will be a bad guy.

It will be the third time Jordan has worked with director Ryan Coogler, following Fruitvale Station and Creed. Black Panther will shoot early next year for release February 2018.

Lupita Nyong’o Up For Marvel’s Black Panther

May 12, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

lupita-nyongoChadwick Boseman’s Black Panther has already made its first appearance in Marvel’s Captain America: Civil War, ahead of a stand alone movie planned for 2018. The movie now has a new name attached, as THR reports that Lupita Nyong’o is in talks to star in the movie.

It’s not known who Nyong’o would play in the film, but she’s described as the title character’s love interest in the Ryan Coogler directed movie.

Black Panther is the chieftain of the Panther Clan in the fictional African country of Wakanda. His powers are derived from a special herb that grants him superhuman strength, speed, and stamina. Andy Serkis is also onboard as the villainous Ulysses Klaue, with Martin Freeman also expected to show up as Everett Ross. Marvel first dropped hints about this long-awaited project in Iron Man 2, where the map of Wakanda was briefly displayed. However, it took them longer to perfect the script than originally planned, moving the character’s movie back to 2018.

New Creed Trailer – The Rocky Saga gets a fresh start with Michael B. Jordan

September 15, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

creed-new-slideThe Rocky films are going in a new direction that could potentially spin-off into a franchise of its own with Creed, which follow he son of the famed Apollo Creed, who ends being coached by Rocky Balboa himself.

To give us a fresh taste, a new trailer has arrived.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Adonis Johnson (Jordan) never knew his famous father, world heavyweight champion Apollo Creed, who died before he was born. Still, there’s no denying that boxing is in his blood, so Adonis heads to Philadelphia, the site of Apollo Creed’s legendary match with a tough upstart named Rocky Balboa.

‘Once in the City of Brotherly Love, Adonis tracks Rocky (Stallone) down and asks him to be his trainer. Despite his insistence that he is out of the fight game for good, Rocky sees in Adonis the strength and determination he had known in Apollo—the fierce rival who became his closest friend. Agreeing to take him on, Rocky trains the young fighter, even as the former champ is battling an opponent more deadly than any he faced in the ring.

‘With Rocky in his corner, it isn’t long before Adonis gets his own shot at the title… but can he develop not only the drive but also the heart of a true fighter, in time to get into the ring?’
