Ray Liotta Joins The Muppets 2

January 23, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

ray-liottaRay Liotta has joined the cast of The Muppets 2 for director James Bobin and Walt Disney Pictures, according to Variety. The actor’s role was not revealed, although this project marks a bit of a reunion, as Liotta played a gate guard in 1999’s Muppets from Space.

The Muppets 2 follows the felt-covered ones all across Europe on a new caper adventure. Ty Burrell stars as an Interpol inspector, with Tina Fey portraying the female lead, a guard at a Russian gulag prison. Ricky Gervais also stars, although his role has not yet been identified. The Muppets star Jason Segel is not returning, although the entire Muppet clan including Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy will be back.

James Bobin is directing from a screenplay he co-wrote with Nick Stoller.. Production is scheduled to begin in London this month, with a March 21st, 2014 release date already set.

Pirates of the Caribbean 5 Coming July 2015, With Dates For Muppets 2 & Clooney Starrer 1952 Also Set

January 15, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

pirates-4-poster2Disney has been firming up its release slate and announcing when it plans to bring us new movies over the next couple of years. While we knew when the likes of Captain America: The Winter Soldier was coming (April 4th 2014 – and it’s been confirmed it’ll be in 3D), the studio has dated several other films.

Pirates Of The Caribbean 5 is now due on July 10th 2015, which means they’ve still got a bit of time to get it ready – which is probably just as well, seeing as it was only yesterday that a new writer was hired to sort out the script.

Also dated is The Muppets 2, which is due to shoot soon in London and will reach cinemas on March 21st 2014. Brad Bird’s 1952, which is set to star George Clooney and concerns the first man to make contact with aliens, also gets a release slot, with a December 19th 2014 date set. The film will be in 3D.

There’s been a bit of shuffling with the Angelina Jolie fairy tale movie Maleficent, which had been due March 2014 but has now slipped back a few months to July 2nd, 2014.

At the moment only the US dates are confirmed, but expect them in the UK around the same time.

Tina Fey In Talks For Muppets 2 Female Lead

January 9, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

tina-feyA lot of people grumbled when Ricky Gervais was cast as the male lead in The Muppets 2, but there should be less division over that fact 30 Rock’s Tina Fey is now in talks for the female lead in the movie, according to THR. Assuming she does sign on, it would mean both last year and this year’s Golden Globe Awards hosts would be in the film.

Plot details are being held under wraps, but it’s slipped out that Fey is going to play a Russian gulag prison guard. Ty Burrell will be playing a lazy Interpol inspector, while Ricky Gervais’s character is still unknown. The film will see Kermit and co, heading to Europe.

It’s also been suggested by /Film that the working title for the film is The Muppets… Again, although it’s not known if that’s the name it will come to cinemas under.

James Bobin will be back to direct the sequel from a screenplay he wrote with Nick Stoller. Production is scheduled to begin this month in London.

Ricky Gervais In Talks For Lead Human Role In The Muppets 2

December 18, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

ricky-gervaisIt’s news that will delight some and annoy others, THR has revealed that Ricky Gervais is in negotiations to take the lead human role in The Muppets 2. Not much is known about the specifics of the part, although it is being compared to Jason Segel’s role in The Muppets.

Assuming Gervais does sign up, he’ll join Modern Family star Ty Burrell, who has replaced Christoph Waltz as an Interpol policeman. There is another major human role, a Russian femme fatale, but that part has not been cast yet. As you may have guessed, the sequel takes Kermit and company to Europe, although specific plot details have not been revealed. It will be Gervais’ first lead role since 2009’s The Invention of Lying.

Muppets director James Bobin is back in the director’s chair, working for a screenplay he co-wrote with Nick Stoller. Shooting is scheduled to begin this winter in London.

The Muppets 2 Gets Ty Burrell, Replacing Christoph Waltz

December 8, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

A couple of months ago, it was revealed that Christoph Waltz was in talk to star in The Muppets 2. However a deal couldn’t be reached with the Oscar winner due to scheduling conflicts and so he’s been replaced by Modern Family star Ty Burrell, according the THR.

Burrell is set to play an Interpol inspector, one of the key, non-puppet roles, in a film that’s said to bring Kermit and co. to Europe. Other parts that are still being cast are a Russian femme fatale and a mysterious male lead. There are also expected to be a slew of cameos.

Muppets director James Bobin is returning helm the film, working from a screenplay he co-wrote with Nick Stoller. Jason Segel, who co-wrote and starred in The Muppets is not coming back for the sequel. Shooting is slated to begin this winter in London (which means Burrell is going to have to slot in his role amongst his Modern Family commitments).

Christoph Waltz In Talks For The Muppets 2

November 1, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Django Unchained and Inglourious Basterds star Christoph Waltz is looking for something a bit lighter to his usual fare, as he has entered negotiations to star in The Muppets 2 for Disney and director James Bobin, according to THR.

The actor will apparently play an Interpol agent in the sequel, which will be see Kermit and his cohorts heading to Europe. Waltz’s role is apparently one of the few key human parts, aside from a slew of cameos. Other non-Muppet roles include a Russian femme fatale and the male lead, whose intentions are always questionable. The Muppets star Jason Segel will not be returning for the follow-up. However other than that, there’s not too much info on the plot. That said, it’s previously been said the movie is a homage to 1981’s The Great Muppet Caper.

James Bobin will direct from a screenplay he co-wrote with Nick Stoller.

Muppet Sequel Plot Details Emerge

April 16, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

With $160 million in the bank, The Muppets was a big enough hit that Disney has been working on a sequel, even if an increasingly busy Jason Segel has had to step aside from writing the script and probably won’t star either (although more about that later).

If the House Of Mouse gets its way, the follow-up could arrive as early as Summer 2013 (with family franchises, the shorter the interval between installments, the better), although writer Nick Stoller has been talking to Collider and doesn’t think that’s a possibility. He says, “They want to do it. They want it as soon as possible, which is good. I’m not sure exactly when they want to release it. I think it was something like next summer. I don’t think that’s realistic in terms of getting it all together in time. But to want to do it so quickly is great. It certainly makes us want to write it quickly. I’m writing with James Bobin. We’ve outlined it over the past couple weeks and we literally started writing it yesterday. The first 13 pages are written. It is started. It is on.”

Stoller also talks about the plot, and revealed that star Jason Segel may have a cameo in the sequel, which will be take a page from the 1981 film, The Great Muppet Caper. He says, “There’s a cameo possibility in it, definitely. Gary and Mary’s story is concluded. There’s not much to say after that for their story, but we follow them up into a…I will say, it is a caper. It is a comedy caper. It’s similar to the first one. [It] had dramatic connections to the first Muppet movie, but it was a whole new thing, hopefully. This is the same thing. We love The Great Muppet Caper. So this has some elements of that, but it’s different because it’s in the tone of what [we] like to do.”
