The Turin Horse (DVD)

September 9, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Janos Derzsi, Erika Bok, Mihaly Kormos
Director: Bela Tarr
Running Time: 145 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: September 10th 2012

If you look at the 88% RottenTomatoes.com rating for The Turin Horse, it certainly appears the film has been getting a lot of love. However there are two completely separate reviews you could write for the movie – one for the cineaste art film fan, and another for the average Michael Bay movie loving moviegoer.

It probably won’t be a shock that the former will probably love this movie, while the latter will be bored stiff and wonder what on earth is going on.

So presuming you’re a member of the former group (or indeed a Michael Bay lover who also has more refined tastes), this is a film that may last nearly two-and-a-half hours with not much happening, but offers a lot in return. [Read more…]

Sherlock Holmes: The Hound Of The Baskervilles (DVD)

May 21, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Vasili Livanov, Vitali Solomin, Nikita Mihalkov
Director: Igor Maslennikov
Running Time: 145 mins
Certificate: PG
Release Date: May 21st, 2012

When we think of Soviet Era Russia, we don’t normally considering people under Communist rule settling down to watch a home-grown adaptation of Sherlock Holmes on television. However in the late 70s and early 80s director Igor Maslennikov made a series of TV versions of Conan Doyle’s tales about his famed consulting detective, which are surprisingly faithful. They also thankfully lack the feel of some Cold War era Russian entertainment (particularly if it’s set in the West), that the State is forcing it to push an anti-capitalist agenda.

After the death of Sir Henry Baskerville, his nephew Charles seeks the help of famed consulting detective Sherlock Holmes (Vasili Livanov), hoping he can use the man’s deductive reasoning skills to pull apart the suspicious circumstances surrounding Henry’s death. [Read more…]

West Side Story (Blu-ray)

October 29, 2011 By admin Leave a Comment

Starring: Natalie Wood, Richard Beymer, George Chakiris, Russ Tamblyn, Rita Moreno
Director: Jerome Robbins, Robert Wise
Running Time: 145 mins
Certificate: PG
Release Date: October 17th, 2011

If you ever told someone about West Side Story who didn’t know anything about it, their response is likely to be, ‘That sounds awful!’ It is a concept you really wouldn’t think would work on the screen, except for a niche audience. After all, it is essentially a film that asks you to accept a bunch of street toughs who sort everything out with ballet, and which features plot twists (admittedly borrowed from Romeo & Juliet) that are far-fetched to say the least.

However thanks to an incredible conjunction of talent, it doesn’t just work but is one of the greatest musicals ever created. As you probably know, the film is essentially Romeo & Juliet but transferred to the streets of New York, with the Capulets and Montagues replaced by the white street gang The Jets and the Puerto Rican Sharks.
