Glances Short Film – The power of gay guys checking each other out

December 4, 2013 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

Glances is the sort of movie you’ll either find sweet and charming of a little terrifying. If you’re a born romantic you’ll love it, but if you run a mile from guys who seems to be planning the decor of your home together before they’ve actually spoken to them, you may find it a tad creepy.

That said, most of us will be able to relate to checking out a hot guy and not knowing what to do next – should you speak to them? Are they even gay? What are all the possibilities of making real contact?

It’s less than four-minutes long, and well worth a look. So take a look above. [Read more…]

Sam – LGBTQ-themed short film looks at gender-identity & the pain of bullying

November 26, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

After screening at nearly two dozen queer film festivals, the LGBTQ short film Sam has popped up online, and you can watch it in its entirety above.

Along with the online debut, director Sal Bardo has been chatting to Queerty, saying “I didn’t want to make a public service announcement, but instead try to draw the audience into this child’s world and see life from her perspective,” he says of the contemplative film. “I’m also really interested in exploring topics that I’m not all that familiar with, so I chose to make the character a girl confronting her gender identity, which is another issue that I think deserves more attention.”

He was inspired to make the movie after hearing about a spate of LGBT teen suicides, and wanted to add something to the conversation. The result was Sam.

The film follows a young girl who is bullied and beaten for looking like a boy, which results in her trying to make difficult decisions. [Read more…]

Jackpot Short Film – A gay teen finds porn in the pre-internet age

November 17, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

We covered Jackpot back when it screened at the Iris Prize gay short film festival back in 2012. Now the whole thing has popped up online, courtesy of director Adam Baran, and you can watch it above.

Here’s what we had to say about the movie when we caught it, ‘Jackpot is a breath of fresh air. A 14-year-old boy is interrupted from a moment of self-pleasure by a phone call from his friend. The news of a stash of gay pornography being found leads the protagonist to rush out and hunt it down. Upon discovering the bounty he is visited by the apparition of one of the models in ‘Jackpot’ magazine, who helps him overcome the bullies who aim to ruin his day.

‘The story of a boy hunting down pornography to give himself a good time, and the introduction to his imaginary friend was quite a surprise: a very pleasant one. I’ve never seen a film with such a fresh (and silly) concept! And one executed so well? Get out of here! The production of the film suits the narrative so well, with fast cuts, outrageous costumes and vibrant colours. The boy taking a stand against the bullies shows this film also has an important message for its audience. Surprisingly tasteful given the subject matter, this film swaggers with confidence and shows off director Adam Baran’s high professional standards. The timing is impeccable. It is the most fun I have had watching a short film.’

If you like the short, you can give a tip over on Vimeo. [Read more…]

Knowing Short Film – The sexy, NSFW PSA wants you to check your HIV status

November 10, 2013 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

knowing-psa2
One of the unintended side effects of medication that’s allowed HIV to become a manageable condition has been that many people in the gay community are less likely to heed safe sex messages or check their HIV status.

Simultaneously there’s still a huge amount of misinformation about the disease, not least who you’re most likely to catch it from. For example, you’re less likely to become infected from taking sensible precautions with someone who is HIV+ and has a undectable load, than from unsafe hook-ups with someone whose status you don’t know (and they may not know either).

To help increase ‘knowledge, communication and compassion’, The Impulse Group has come up with a very sexy and well-made short film, called Knowing, which ‘highlights the journey from a break-up to knowing one’s HIV status to communicating that status. And of course, love and compassion prevail.’

HIV PSAs have a tendency to be rather clinical and have a lingering sense of doom hanging over them, which is both unhelpful and doesn’t really reflect the modern sense of living with the disease. Knowing takes a more realistic and positive attitude, while not minimising the importance of knowing your status and being sensible. Plus it manages to be incredibly sexy while doing it!

Love Always Wins Short Film Challenges Russian Anti-Gay Laws At The Winter Olympics

November 4, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Russia has come under a lot of international pressure recently for new laws that make it illegal to ‘promote’ non-traditional relationships to minors. While lawmakers insist it isn’t homophobic, it essentially outlaws any public support of anything LGBT, and some of the laws more virulent supporters want to extend that to it banning any visible signs of anything gay.

This has inevitably caused some to question how the laws will effect gay athletes and supporters at the upcoming Winter Olympics. All Out has decided to take that on with a well-made and rather moving two-minute short called Love Always Wins, looking at the reaction of a Lesbian ice skater after winning.

Take a look above and head over to All Out to find out more. [Read more…]

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Housemates Jade, Michael and Stacey are the Neapolitan ice cream of sexuality. Young, sexy and single, they search for love and happiness in Sydney’s modern hetero-flexible dating scene, but instead they often find humiliation and hilarious misadventure. But no matter what happens, they always have each other.’

Short Documentary About Tom Of Finland Shows Up Online

November 2, 2013 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

Tom-of-Finland-bio-coverThere’s been a lot of interest in homoerotic artist Tom Of Finland recently, which seems to be repositioning him from being seen as a purveyor of well drawn, big-bulged smut, to being respected as a legitimate artist whose unapologetically homoerotic imagery fought against mainstream hatred of everything LGBT and helped illuminate queer culture at a time when even gay people didn’t know what that meant.

As a result of this shift, two movie about the man are in the works, and an exhibition on Bob Mizer & Tom of Finland at MOCA (Museum Of Contemporary Art) Pacific Design Center in LA. Now that MOCA exhibit has resulted in the emergence of the short documentary below, which looks at Tom and the Tom Of Finland Foundation.

Silver Creek Short Film – Sweet flick helps raise money for LGBT youth charities

October 30, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

‘Silver Creek tells the tale of a young band of outsiders, isolated and teased in their community, who one day discover the magic of their own creativity and imagination. The kids find solace and support in their celebration, though the moment is short-lived, and others try to break them apart.

‘If viewers are moved by this short film’s message, they are encouraged to click the “TIP THIS VIDEO” button right below this text. The funds raised from this are not only a “tip” – they are the necessary resources that make the work done by the beneficiary charities, the Trevor Project and Rainbow Resource Centre possible. Both organizations do exceptional work with LGBTQ youth in crisis and offer supportive services that make a vital difference in young people’s lives.

‘In 2012 Salazar set out across Canada driving over 2600 Kilometers from Vancouver, British Columbia to the village of Angusville, Manitoba to create Silver Creek. Over the course of 2 weeks the people of Angusville embraced our little band and our project, letting us shut down main street for days on end, invade their backyards, and throw confetti literally everywhere.

‘We cast local actors and kids from around the region and many residents came out to be background actors. Every night our crew and the community broke bread together in the town hall. It was a profoundly unique experience for all involved. For two weeks a band of 50 odd people came together as a family, we lived together, and got to play together at making a film. This tight knit togetherness fit with the spirit of what our film was trying to convey. [Read more…]

Gay Web Series Husbands Gets Its Third Season International Release As Well As A Sexy Poster

October 19, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

While web series have allowed small independent producers to gain audiences themselves, the big boys have been watching and so it’s now surprising they want a piece of the pie. One of those is US TV network The CW, which has launched The CW Seed, as a place for original new web shows.

One of their first exclusives on Youtube is the international release of the gay-themed web series Husbands (it’s becoming a bit of an issue that productions that gained international fandom on the web are being increasingly bought up by companies that then restrict viewership to the US, so it’s great Husbands is now going worldwide).

Husbands is set in a fictional America where gay marriage is legal everywhere, and two celebrities – one an openly gay actor and the other a newly out baseball player – drunkenly get hitched in Las Vegas. Despite the fact it’s all happened a bit quick, their worry about scandal and disgracing the hard won right of gays getting married means they decide to keep their secret and try to make the relationship work.

Amy Acker, Beth Grant, Seth Green, and Michael Hogan all show up in Season 3. Six episodes have now added soon to CW Seed’s Youtube channel, so enjoy it above, as well as the sexy poster featuring Husbands stars Brad Bell, Sean Hemeon. [Read more…]
