Gay Short Film Showcase: Better Known as Peaches Christ – A short portrait of a drag queen legend

July 2, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

A few years ago drag was definitely looked down upon. It was seen by many as old-fashioned and playing into feminised stereotypes of what hereosexual people expected gay men to be. However, thanks to the likes of Drag Race there’s been a reassessment, with many now seeing it as bold, transgressive and sticking a middle finger up to cultural norms (although some in the trans community still have issues with it).

One of San Francisco’s most famous drag performers is Peaches Christ, who’s been on stage for more than two decades, and has developed a strong following. Now there’s a short but very interesting documentary about her, which distils six-hours of footage down to under four minutes, to give us a quick view of where the character came from and what it means. Better Known As Peaches Christ has been screening at film festivals and has now been released online.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Two decades after Joshua Grannell gave birth to his bold, brazen, busty alter-ego, Peaches Christ has become a beloved cult icon. This lush, intimate portrait offers a rare candid glimpse into the pre-show transformation of San Francisco’s most sought-after drag queen. Both man and queen get personal as they discuss transgression, catharsis, and how by becoming someone else, Joshua learned to love himself.’

Tokyo Neighbors: Episodes 1&2 – Into the lives & love of a group of Japanese gay guys

July 2, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The majority of the web series we’ve featured on BGPS are from America, so it’s also nice to find one from another part of the globe. Now there’s a new series from Japan, following the stories of gay men living in Tokyo.

The show is made up of two-part episodes, with each duo of instalments focusing on different people and/or tales. The first story looks at a young man who’s been living abroad but has now returned to Tokyo and is looking for a job. He’s also looking for love, but finding it difficult. While he’s interested in bartender Ataru, showing it isn’t that easy.

Tokyo Neighbours is a sweet little series made up of short episodes. It’s a show that underlines that even on the other side of the world, the problems of gay people and the things that matter to them are the same as most people everywhere else, and that includes a culture where gay people aren’t as openly seen and accepted in society as they are in many western nations.

Take a look at the first two episodes below, which appear to be the only ones so far that have English subtitles (you may need to switch on the subtitles by clicking ‘CC’). (h/t Instinct) [Read more…]

The Feels: S2 Eps 1-6 – The semi-improvised web show about a bisexual teacher is back

June 6, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

There’s been a growing conversation about bisexual erasure in the last year, where even in LGBT entertainment characters tends to be either gay or straight, and even when they are bisexual it’s more paying lip service to the issues of bi people than engaging with them. The web series The Feels is therefore a bit special, placing the life of a bisexual character (who’s described as having ‘way too many feelings’) and his issues at the forefront.

In semi-improvised episodes ‘that blur the line of reality, we see a multi-layered picture of a queer character, with glimpses of love balanced with life as a high school English teacher, as a person struggling with mental health, and as an American at this unique political moment.’

“Every time I hear a story about a bi guy, I feel less alone,” says Tim Manley, star and co-creator of The Feels. “By inviting other performers to co-write their episodes, I’m hoping more perspectives create more places to connect.”

Those co-writers include critically-acclaimed actress Adepero Oduye (12 Years a Slave, The Big Short), and agender activist and model Tyler Ford (TIME Magazine, Interview Magazine).

The second season is certainly going to give us plenty of entertainment – in bite-sized nuggets – as a new episode is being released every day in June. That means we’ve had six of them so far. You can catch up on Season 1 (and watch new episodes as they’re released), over on The Feels Youtube channel.

Take a look at the first six eps of The Feels: Season 2 below. [Read more…]

Gay Short Film Showcase: Yeah Kowalski! – A teen does what he can when he learns his crush likes body hair

June 6, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

A few years ago, Yeah Kowalski! became a real favourite on the LGBT film festival circuit. It played around the world, charming audience with its humour and hope.

It tells the story of teen Gabe, who discovers his crush, Shane, thinks men are better with a bit of body hair. However, being a bit of a late bloomer, Gabe is rather lacking in that department, so he sets out to find a way to change that.

The short if now the latest in the Frameline Voices series of releases, which set out to provide a variety of LGBT voices on screen, with a focus of films that can be used in the classroom as part of an LGBT-inclusive curriculum.

Gay Short Film Showcase: Arrival – A modern gay love story gets animated

May 30, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

There aren’t too many animated gay films, but a new one has now appeared online, Arrival. The short has been a success at film festivals, including the likes of New Queer Vision at the London Short Film Showcase, and the Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival. It’s also rare nowadays for being a traditionally animated film, involving 7,000 drawings on paper, which were then were scanned and then digitally inked and colored.

Now, Alex Myung’s entire 22-minute film has been released online for everyone to see.

So what’s it about? Here’s the synopsis: ‘This 2D-animated film explores one boy’s struggle to face the truth of his life and love, and reveal it to the person he cares about most. Arrival delves into the often unexamined ripple effect that hiding your true self has on loved ones around you.’

Take a look at the sweet and charming Arrival below. If you know a short film we ought to be posting, tell us by getting in touch via our contact page. And check out more LGBT short films and web series here. [Read more…]

Ave 43: Season 10 Teaser – The crazy, gay-themed, web series soap opera is coming back

May 28, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

If you haven’t seen any of Ave 43, you’ve got plenty of catching up to do. Since 2009, 82 episodes of the indie web series have been released, and as it’s a soap, some nutty things have happened in that time. A lot of it centres around gay themes and chracters, and what doesn’t is camp enough to feel quite gay anyway!

It certainly manages to fit a lot of craziness into each episode – ranging from major infidelity and devil worship, to the revelation a character has married his own father – and that’s just Chapter 80. The show is now gearing up to release its 10th season, which premieres on June 7th. Creator Justin Tanner has released a teaser to help give us a feel for what’s in store.

So what’s it all about? One of the show’s stars, Andy Steinlen, told us, “The show is set in the L.A. hipster haven of Highland Park and plotlines frequently revolve around sex, drugs, witchcraft, Satanism, split personalities, blackmail, murder, ghosts, space aliens, telekinesis, time portals to other dimensions, half-naked men…and one particularly naughty cat puppet. Yeah, it’s twisted. We’ve been running consistently on YouTube since 2009 and we’re all incredibly proud of the show. There’s nothing else even remotely like it on the web.

‘We’re currently gearing up to launch our 10th season on June 7th – and we’re excited to announce that we have some CELEBRITY GUEST STARS coming on-board, including Alec Mapa (Desperate Housewives), Charlene Tilton (Dallas), French Stewart (3rd Rock from the Sun), Mo Collins (MADtv), Melissa Peterman (Reba), Dave Foley (The Kids in the Hall), Ann Magnuson (Anything But Love), Gedde Watanabe (Sixteen Candles) and Pat Loud (reality show pioneer-mom of the groundbreaking 1973 PBS series An American Family). They’ll be joined by our regular recurring cast members that include Todd Lowe (Gilmore Girls), Dale Raoul (True Blood), John Quale aka Prince Poppycock (America’s Got Talent), Constance Forslund (The Way We Were), Jayne Taini (When We Rise), Sab Shimono (Hawaii Five-0) and a host of other instantly recognizable faces from film, television and the L.A. stage.’

Take a look at the Season 10 teaser below, and you can catch up with the rest of Ave 43 over on the official website. [Read more…]

Gay Short Film Showcase: The Curse of the Un-Kissable Kid – A teen will become invisible without true love’s kiss

May 28, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Although not a brand new film, The Curse of the Un-Kissable Kid is certainly more than cute and funy enough to deserve a look. It follows Joshua, a 14-year-old boy who’s just figuring out his sexuality, but is getting bullied by one of the popular kids.

A psychic at a carnival gives him a potion that will help sort out his problems, but there’s a catch. If he doesn’t get a proper kiss withing 24 hours, he will become invisilbe forever. But who can he find to kiss? The only answer is a kissing booth!

It certainly fits a lot into 13-minutes, with a full-on (if slightly rnadom) musical number, some special effects and a cameo from gay film/web series stalwart Drew Droege, as well as Catwoman herself, Lee Meriwether. You can watch Mark Marchillo’s short film below.

In A Heartbeat Trailer – Take a look at the CGI animated gay-themed short that smashed its Kickstarter

May 20, 2017 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

There aren’t many gay-themed computer animated LGBT-themed short films, and so In A Heartbeat is something a bit special. Many others have agreed, as after it launched a Kickstarter in the hope of raising $3,000 in the hope of finishing the short off, in ended up smashing that target and instead getting over $14,000 worth of pledges.

Esteban Bravo and Beth David from the Ringling College of Art are the filmmakers behind the project, which will be three to four minutes long when complete. In the short, ‘A closeted boy runs the risk of being outed by his own heart after it pops out of his chest to chase down the boy of his dreams.’

Bravo says, “Being gay is a subject that hasn’t been widely explored in computer animation. Nine out of ten LGBT youths have reported incidences of bullying based on their orientations and identities.”

David adds, “We want to put out a message of love and self acceptance to all the kids and young people who struggle to identify as LGBT+ just like Sherwin does.”

Bravo continue, “The heart wants what the heart wants, and there’s nothing wrong with that.”

Take a look at the cute trailer below. In A Heartbeat is expected to be released online for free sometime this summer. [Read more…]

Gay Short Film Showcase: Bayard & Me – A look at legendary civil rights activist Bayard Rustin & his boyfriend

May 17, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Synopsis: ‘In Bayard & Me, award-winning filmmaker Matt Wolf shares the little-known story of civil rights activist Bayard Rustin and the lengths he went to legalize his relationship with his partner Walter Naegle.

‘The civil rights activist is best known for organizing the March on Washington and advising Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In the 1980s, Bayard adopted his younger partner Walter Naegle for legal protections. In this intimate love story, Walter remembers Bayard, who died in 1987 at the age of 75, and a time when gay marriage was inconceivable. He also reflects on the phenomena of intergenerational gay adoption and its connection to the civil rights movement.’

“I made this film because I’m inspired by the creative ways that Bayard Rustin and his partner Walter Naegle worked around the system to obtain equal rights,” says director Matt Wolf. “We need direct action in the streets, but sometimes radical things happen in private acts of defiance.”

Bayard & Me premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January and had its international premiere at the Rotterdam Film Festival. It’s continued to earn kudos along the festival circuit, winning Best Documentary Short at QFest and the Calgary Underground Film Festival. Filmmaker Magazine called it “a moving remembrance,” and Town & Country praised it as a “movie to see.”

Gay Short Film Showcase: Wonderkid – Tackling homophobia in football in the powerful short

May 15, 2017 By Tim Isaac 2 Comments

Ever since it was first announced, there’s been a lot of interest in Wonderkid. Initially that was due to the backing of Ian McKellan, who showed up to narrate the Kickstarter video, and the fact it got a grant from the Kevin Spacey Foundation. It’s also got a powerful message, as young filmmaker Rhys Chapman’s film sets out to tack homophobia in football (that’s soccer to any of you Americans out there). The finished product has also proven a great success, including a launch at the 2016 Raindance Film Festival, and being broadcast on Sky Sports 1 HD in the UK.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘After earning a dream move to a London Premier League club, ‘WONDERKID’ should be on top of the world. The reality? He’s faced with callous friends, a hostile changing room, vitriol-filled messages on social media and, crucially, WONDERKID’s having to deal with himself. The film highlights the key issue – why should his sexuality be an issue?’

There are still problems with homophobia in football to be addressed, with the Wonderkid website pointing out that, ‘72% of football fans say they have heard homophobic abuse while watching live sports in the past five years.’ However, at the same time, ‘Nearly two thirds of people say more should be done to make LGBT people feel accepted in sport. Nearly 90% of supporters say they would be either ‘proud’ or ‘neutral’ if their favourite player came out as gay.’

Wonderkid is now available to watch for free. Take a look at the 32-minute short below. [Read more…]
