Giving Thanks: Ryan Murphy

December 10, 2012 By Lewis Shepherd Leave a Comment

We’ve been giving thanks to a number of different people from behind the scenes of various television shows that have helped bring LGBT characters into the mainstream over the years, and in their own way helped us become more accepted in society.

This week we’re taking a look at Ryan Murphy, who after working as a journalist for a number of years moved into television in the late 90s. After the success of his teen comedy series Popular, Murphy then went on to create the extremely popular Nip/Tuck and also worked on a number of film projects.

During this time he created the pilot Pretty/Handsome, which dealt with a transgendered storyline, however the show didn’t get picked up and we can only assume that maybe audiences weren’t quite ready for a show like this.

However, audiences who may have been upset by this needn’t be worried, as the forward thinking Murphy soon unleashed his monster hit Glee on the world. The up-tempo original musical television series was an instant hit with audiences and introduced a whole new generation to musicals. But it is his inclusion of a number of LGBT storylines that we have to give him credit for here.

The show includes openly gay and lesbian characters and relationships and deals with the issues of closeted homosexuality – as well as being young and openly gay. Also, during the wake of the It Gets Better Campaign he created a storyline that showed audiences just how harmful homophobic bullying can be, and showed young people that they could be themselves in the Born This Way episode.

In the most recent series he has also introduced the character of Wade Adams, who has to deal with the issues that come with being trans, something that hasn’t truly been tackled on a scale like this on American television, especially with such a young character.

It doesn’t stop there though as Murphy has since gone on to create two more hit shows; American Horror Story and The New Normal. The former, despite being a nail biting, eye hiding horror story, has incorporated a number of LGBT characters throughout the first two series, and even demonstrated just how hard it was to be gay back in the 1960s during the second season. The New Normal on the other hand shows us just how far our society has come as it centres on what is by all means a new normal in society, an LGBT couple having a baby, which is told in both a funny and heart warming way.

Yes it’s easy to say that for the last few years Ryan Murphy has helped shape a number of attitudes when it comes to LGBT people in society, and has helped tackle the issues faced on a vast scale in funny, horrific, touching and beautifully laid out stories.

Crush Of The Day: Yossi’s Oz Zehavi

December 10, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The gay-themed film Yossi hits DVD in the UK today (December 9th), and while it concentrates on Ohad Knoller’s 30-something doctor, many eyes will be drawn by his gorgeous love interest, 29-year-old Oz Zehavi. Seeing him in the film was more than enough for us to seek out plenty more sexy pics of the actor and model, which you can see right here.

After serving in the Parachuters squad in the Israeli Defence Forse, Oz Zehavi graduated from leading Israeli performing arts institution, the Sela performing arts studio. He has appeared in major television productions such as the prime time Chaim Acherim mini-series, Nevelot, The Island and more. His role in comedy series Asfur brought Oz into the public eye and his subsequent performances on stage and in film have also been favourably received. As an A-list actor in his home country, Oz is the spokesman of one of the biggest fashion companies in Israel, Renaur, for the last 5 seasons.

Relatively recently he has been at the national theatre of Israel in the play Bofur, based on the acclaimed film Beaufort and has also starred in films Infiltration, The Unfortgettables, Miral and of course, Yossi. In 2012, Oz embarked on his career in Hollywood and starred in the TNT network series Southland and in the NBC network pilot, Midnight Sun. Currently, Oz is developing his own show and navigating between Israel and Los Angeles.

He’s a talented chap, but if you just fancy ogling him, click on the pics below to enlarge. [Read more…]

Neil’s Puppet Dreams Episode 2 – Meet Neil Patrick Harris’ Trouser Weasel

December 5, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The new web series Neil’s Puppet Dreams is shaping up to be a lot of fun. Things kicked off last week with Neil Patrick Harris revealing that he dreams in puppets, then falling asleep and plummeting to earth.

Now his puppety narcolepsy has reached the point where he’s consulting a doctor (guest star Nathan Fillion), but he falls asleep and gets into a situation where his hairy trouser weasel shows up.

Yep, it’s true, if you’ve ever wanted to see Neil Patrick Harris’ trouser weasel, or indeed his giant cock, now’s your chance! Have fun watching it above.

New episodes of Neil’s Puppet Dreams are due to show up every Tuesday over on the Nerdist Youtube channel.

Crush Of The Day: Step Up 4’s Ryan Guzman

December 4, 2012 By Tim Isaac 3 Comments

Step Up 4: Miami Heat (aka Step Up: Revolution) hit DVD & Blu-ray yesterday, and while it might not be the greatest film ever made, it does feature the buffness that is Ryan Guzman (we wouldn’t kick co-star Misha Gabriel out of bed either).

The people marketing the movie seem to have realised they had a bit of a hottie on their hands, as they releases a bevy of shirtless shots of the actor and dancer to help promote the movie, which we present here for you delectation.

Step Up marks 25-year old Guzman’s first movie role, having previously worked as a model for the likes of Calvin Klein, as well as trying to make a living using his martial arts skill. Whether his often shirt-free role is Step Up 4 will lead to more movie roles is yet to be seen, although I’m sure he’ll be able to fall back on the modelling if he needs to. [Read more…]

Apropos Of Nothing: Nude Trailer For Warwick Rowing 2013: Brokeback Boathouse

November 29, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

For the last four years, the boys of The University Of Warwick Rowing club have produced a naked calendar, and this year is no exception. To go along with it is a video that follows the boys as they strip off for two days of shoots in a variety of locations, including Warwick Castle, a large country house and, of course, the boys’ very own boathouse. Now the trailer for that vid has been released, with plenty of college boy studliness and careful covering of their oar and floats.

The calendar is available to buy now, with the ‘making of…’ video coming soon (although you can pre-order it). And best of all, profits from the film will go to The Ben Cohen Stand Up Foundation, which works to combat bullying and homophobic abuse of young people.

So good on the University Of Warwick Rowing club! Oh, and if you’re one of those strange people who prefers pictures of naked ladies, for the first time the club has produced a woman’s naked calendar.

Take a look at the trailer above and see the lads having far too much fun being in their birthday suits together. [Read more…]

Jared Leto Looks Scary In New Terry Richardson Pics

November 29, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Jared Leto has always been slim, but he’s lost even more weight to play a gay man with AIDS in The Dallas Buyer’s Club, and to get the cross-dressing part of his role right, he’s also shaved off his eyebrows.

Now cross that with Terry Richardson, a photographer renowned for taking pics of celebs that make you look twice as they don’t quite look like they do under anyone else’s lens.

Richardson has posted a series of recent shots of Leto, showing him in super-skinny, eyebrow-free mode, and to be honest he looks pretty scary. You could plonk him in a horror movie like that and he could be the psycho villain without any make-up – although that said, he does look pretty sexy in the pic below where he’s wearing glasses.

Dallas Buyer’s Club is based on the true story movie of Ron Woodruff (McConaughey), a man who contracts AIDS in 1986. When he’s given just six months to live, he becomes frustrated with the lack of medical options in the US, due to the fact drugs have to be extensively tested by the FDA before they become available to patients, he begins smuggling alternative drugs into the country from Mexico. Jared Leto will portray Rayon, a gay, cross-dressing AIDS patient Woodruff befriends at the hospital.

You can see more of Richardson’s pics of Leto over at his website and below. [Read more…]

First Episode Of Neil Patrick Harris’ Puppet Dreams Online

November 28, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Last week we brought you a very entertaining behind-the-scenes look at the upcoming web series, Neil’s Puppet Dreams, featuring out star Neil Patrick Harris, and a load of Jim Henson built puppet madness (along with some hunky blokes in tiny shorts).

Now the first episode, The Lullaby, is online over at the Youtube Nerdist  – and of course it’s embedded above. It sees Neil and hubby David Burtka trying to get the kids to sleep, before the How I Met Your Mother star falls asleep and enters his strange puppet world.

While many of us have experienced falling in our dreams, few of us will have been serenaded on our descent by a puppet goat, doll and squirrel-looking thing who sing to us about how we’re going to get smashed to a pulp when we reach the ground.

The series will air every Tuesday through to the end of January, with upcoming episodes featuring the likes of Nathan Fillion, Joe Manganiello and more.

It looks like it’s going to be a lot of fun, so make sure you check it out!

Crush Of The Day: Xavier Dolan

November 26, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Xavier Dolan is pretty sickening. He’s good looking, young (just 23), queer and has already directed three feature-length movies, as well as starring in several more. The French-Canadian started out as teenage actor, appearing in the likes of Martyrs. However when he was just 19 he managed to persuade backers to give him the cash to make his feature debut as a director with I Killed My Mother (J’ai tué ma mère), which he also wrote. The film went on to win three awards during the Director’s Fortnight program at the Cannes Film Festival and brought him much acclaim.

Dolan followed that with Heartbeats (Les Amours Imaginaires), about two friends – a man and a woman – who become increasingly infatuated with a mysterious young man. His third movie, Laurence Anyways, arrives in UK cinemas on Friday (November 30th), which stay with LGBT themes, as it’s about the relationship between a male-to-female transsexual and her lover. While Dolan doesn’t star in that one, we still thought it was a good excuse to find some cute pics of him to crush on.

Xavier is already busy putting together his next movie, Tom à la ferme, which follows a man whose lover dies, and he must then meet the dead boyfriend’s family, who weren’t aware their deceased relative was gay.

But for now, just enjoy the pics (which grow if you click on them). And below that I’ve embedded Dolan’s paint-infused sex scene from I Killed My Mother. [Read more…]

12 Entertaining Gay Films That Try To Do Something Different

November 23, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

There are a lot of gay movie out there, but most get released with little fanfare or have disappeared into the mists of time, so it’s sometimes difficult find information about them, and even if you can, it’s often tough to know it they’re worth watching. I thought therefore it might be worth putting together a list of 10 gay flicks I reckon it’s worth checking out, which are entertaining but try to do something a little different from the usual. The list concentrates on those films that, unlike Milk and Philadelphia, didn’t get a major mainstream push, and which show the breadth of what gay cinema has tried to do over the years, from horror movies and musicals to roms coms and animation.  So here we go… [Read more…]

Smash Season 2 Extended Preview – Jennifer Hudson joins the musical ranks

November 22, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

I don’t think it would be too stereotyping to say the main audience for Smash is women and gay men (okay, that’s very stereotyping, but it’s also probably true). While the first season had its ups and downs and often seemed on the edge of collapsing in a sea of incredibly soapy relationship drama and so much backstabbing the entire cast should have been wading through pools of blood, it was still entertaining. That was largely thanks to a strong cast, interesting central characters, plenty of great musical numbers and the fact the core of the story was very watchable.

US TV network NBC obviously realised there were a few problems with the show, as they’ve sacked the show’s creator and brought in someone else to run it for Season 2. There are also going to be a few changes to the cast, with many of the tedious male love interests given the boot, as well as a few of the female characters.

The musical series doesn’t arrive back on our screen until early next year, but NBC has decided to give us an extended sneak peak with the video above.

There’s plenty to look out for, the most notable of which is the appearance of Oscar-winner Jennifer Hudson, who it certainly appears will be given plenty of opportunity to show off her patented brand of emotive wailing. There’s also a new love interest for Karen in the form of Joyful Noise’s Jeremy Jordan. However it’s not all change as there’s still plenty of behind-the-scenes musical drama, and it certainly doesn’t look like Karen and Ivy have suddenly become bosom buds.

Smash returns to US screens on February 5th, and should be back on Sky Atlantic in the UK around the same time.
