Mark Ruffalo Tweets First Official Pic From Ryan Murphy’s AIDS Drama The Normal Heart

June 29, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

HBO is continuing its support for all things gay (following Behind The Candelabra and commissioning a new Frisco set gay-themed series) with The Normal Heart, which Glee creator Ryan Murphy has been trying to get off the ground for a few years, but which only came to fruition when the cable channel put up the money.

The film version of Larry Kramer’s acclaimed AIDS play is now in production in New York, and while there have been quite a few unofficial snaps from the set floating around the Internet, it’s Mark Ruffalo who’s given us our first proper look at the movie. He tweeted it in reaction to the Supreme Court rulings, saying, ‘Everybody on set of “The Normal Heart” is celebrating this historic day. #DOMA. THANK YOU LARRY KRAMER’

The image shows Ruffalo alongside Taylor Kitsch, who will be joined by the likes of Julia Roberts, Matt Bomer, Jim Parsons, Jonathan Groff for the movie.

Ruffalo is taking on the lead role of Ned Weeks, who in the early 80s is one of the first people to raise an alarm about the new disease that initially was known as ‘Gay Cancer’, but later became HIV/AIDS. Big Bang Theory star Jim Parsons will be gay activist Tommy Boatwright, a role he previously took in a 2011 Broadway revival of the play.

Julia Roberts is Emma Brookner, a wheelchair bound doctor who is the only one of her peers in New York taking AIDS seriously. Matthew Bomer is set for Felix Turner, a gay fashion journalist who becomes Ned’s lover. Groff is playing an early victim of the disease called Craig, whose boyfriend, Taylor Kitsch, starts off as a closeted investment banker but eventually becomes an AIDS activist.

Larry Kramer’s play is considered one of the most important reactions to the early AIDS epidemic, written by someone who has on the front lines of the fight, such as co-founding Gay Men’s Health Crisis and ACT UP. He later wrote a follow-up, The Destiny Of Me.

The film will air on HBO early next year.

Les Invisibles Trailer – Inside the lives of elderly LGBT people

June 28, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It’s a common joke that in the youth-obsessed world of all thing gay, you cease to exist when you reach 30. But what happens when you’re in your 60s or 70s and you’re gay?

That’s the subject of Sébastien Lifshitz (best known for Presque Rien) award-winning documentary Les Invisibles, which reaches UK cinemas on July 12th.

It follows ‘Eleven men and women born between the wars. Seemingly they have nothing in common except their homosexuality and growing up in a less open, more intolerant society. Now in their 60s and 70s, they tell their personal stories, either shared or alone, revealing often pioneering lives in urban and rural environments through seven decades of experience.’

The film offers intimate portraits of gay and lesbian life from an older generation who often remain invisible and unheard.  They recount with refreshing honesty and humour their passions and politics, their sexual encounters and loving relationships, their self doubts and liberating experiences.

Upstairs Inferno Trailer – New doc looks at the biggest mass killing of gay people in US history (and seeks funding to do so)

June 25, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Yesterday marked the 40th anniversary of the tragic events at the Upstairs Lounge in New Orleans, which was firebombed on June 24th 1973 and resulted in the death of 32 people. It’s the largest gay mass murder in US history, but despite that, few people know about the tragedy. That’s partly because it went under-reported at the time, and subsequently swept under the carpet.

Thirty-two people were killed and some bodies were never identified because their families were ashamed that the victims were gay. No one was ever charged with the crime. While the Stonewall Riots in New York City only four years earlier united a community, the fire caused many in the New Orleans gay community to stay in the closet.

Camina Entertainment, Inc. has now announced that production has begun on a documentary about the fire, Upstairs Inferno, directed by Robert L. Camina.

The director comments, “It is crucial to acknowledge, preserve and honor our history as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) people. The LGBT dialogue has changed so much in the past few years.  As popular attitudes shift on LGBT issues, we risk losing the stories of the struggles that got us where we are today. It’s our responsibility to honor the memories of those who came before us, including those who died at the Upstairs Lounge. The men and women who experienced this tragedy paved the way for the freedoms enjoyed by the New Orleans LGBT community of today, as well as the overall LGBT movement. Upstairs Inferno intends to honor their forgotten stories.”

An IndieGoGo fundraising campaign was launched last week to help cover production costs for preserving the Upstairs Inferno tragedy on film. People can donate to the film by following the link on www.upstairsinferno.com or directly at http://igg.me/at/UpstairsInferno/x/83651.

Camina’s full length documentary aims to tell the story primarily through emotional interviews with survivors, families of victims and key players involved with the aftermath. Upstairs Inferno will also feature interviews with historians, experts and current leaders of the New Orleans LGBT community.

Camina’s previous documentary, Raid of the Rainbow Lounge, recounted the widely publicised and controversial June 28th, 2009 police raid of a Fort Worth, Texas gay bar that resulted in multiple arrests and serious injuries. Over the past 15 months, the documentary has screened over 35 times, including 29 mainstream and LGBT film festivals across the United States, Mexico and Canada. The film has won several awards including 3 Best Film and 3 Audience Choice Awards.

Dunno Y 2 Teaser – Take a look at the follow-up to the controversial gay-themed Bollywood film

June 25, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Homosexuality it a massively controversial subject in India at the moment, with moves to provide legal and social protections coming up against entrenched and very vocal homophobia in large sections of the population.

One film that tried to combat that was 2010’s Dunno Y…Na Jaane Kyon, one of the few films to emerge from Bollywood with a sensitive gay theme (it’s billed as the first Indian film with two men kissing). The movie won several awards and became a success, despite protests greeting its premiere at the the Kashish Mumbai International Queer Film Festival and many cinemas boycotting the movie.

As Gay Star News points out, one of the actors in the film, Yuvraaj Parashar, was even disowned by his parents for appearing in the movie, saying they did not want to see ‘his face even in death’.

Now a sequel is coming, and thankfully Parashar hasn’t let his experience with the first put him off as he’s returning alongside original cast members Kapil Sharma and Zeenat Aman.

The first film was a drama following a man exploring his gay identity, while the sequel is billed as more of a rom com.

A teaser for the movie has now been released, which you can watch above. The film will debut in 2014. [Read more…]

Before You Know It Trailer – New documentary looks at LGBT pensioners

June 19, 2013 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

Synopsis: The subjects of Before You Know It are no ordinary senior citizens. They are go-go booted bar-hoppers, love struck activists, troublemaking baton twirlers, late night Internet cruisers, seasoned renegades and bold adventurers. They are also among the estimated 2.4 million lesbian, gay and bisexual Americans over the age of 55 in the United States, many of whom face heightened levels of discrimination, neglect and exclusion. But Before is not a film about cold statistics and gloomy realities, it’s a film about generational trailblazers who have surmounted prejudice and defied expectation to form communities of strength, renewal and camaraderie—whether these communities be affable senior living facilities, lively activist enclaves or wacky queer bars brimming with glittered trinkets and colorful drag queens.

Dennis is a gentle-hearted widower in his 70s who begins exploring his sexual identity and fondness for dressing in women’s clothing under the name “Dee.” Ty is an impassioned LGBT activist who hears nothing but wedding bells once gay marriage passes in New York. Robert “The Mouth” is a feisty bar owner who presses on when his neighborhood institution comes under threat. Born before the Civil Rights era, these men have witnessed unbelievable change in their lifetimes, from the Stonewall Riots and gay liberation, to the HIV/AIDS pandemic and Queer Nation, to gay marriage and Lady Gaga, and have lived to become part of an unprecedented “out” elder generation. Before focuses on the lives of these three gay seniors, but reminds us that while LGBT elders face a specific set of issues, aging and its challenges are universal. An affirmation of life and human resilience told with a refreshing humor and candor, Before confirms that you are never too old to reshape society.

The film is currently screening at film festivals. [Read more…]

Ronny & I – Bryan Singer produced gay-themed flick, shot on a iPhone, seeks funding

June 15, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Ronny & I certainly has some great backers, including Glee’s Jane Lynch and X-Men director Bryan Singer acting as executive producers. It’s also an interesting idea – a gay-themed, teen road trip short film, all shot on an iPhone 5.

Guy Shalem’s movie is already in the can and has already screened at Cannes – the first film shot on an iPhone to do so – but now it’s seeking $60,000 on IndieGoGo in order to further distribute and promote the movie (and also gain a bit of an online following). And if you give $8,000, you can even own the iPhone it was filmed on as one of the rewards!

The synopsis says, ‘Ronny & I is a true and personal story from director Guy Shalem. An indie film that is meant to inspire and capture the hearts of people. Through love and friendship, both characters discover something unique and more about the world around them.’

Bryan Singer commented, “I have followed Guy’s work for many years and this short film captures an incredible intimate feeling that is difficult to describe. I hope it gets the attention it deserves!”

Jane Lynch adds, “I am excited for everyone to experience this film. I am so proud of Guy’s latest collaboration, which movingly brings the story of his first love to the screen.”

Find out a bit more about the movie in the vid above and over at IndieGoGo. [Read more…]

Solo Trailer – You never know who your online date might be in the new gay-themed flick

June 11, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

In this sexy, romantic, and uncomfortably chilling tale of love and deception from first time director Marcelo Briem Stamm, two men meet in a chat room but when they eventually meet in person and the sexual sparks are hot.

While sex is satisfying and often, it is their collective problems with intimacy, trust and the fear of being hurt that make them hesitant to commit fully. As their relationship develops, both reveal secrets from their past but these revelations may be real, imagined or outright lies.

TLA Releasing is currently bringing Solo to film festivals. [Read more…]

Is Hollywood Still Keen On Killing Off Gay Characters?

June 11, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

behind-the-candelabra-new-slide‘Since Philadelphia there have been, by my count, 257 Academy Award-nominated portrayals of heterosexual characters, and 23 of gay, bisexual or transsexual characters. Of the heterosexual characters, 16.5% (59) die. Of the LGBT characters, 56.5% (13) die. Of the 10 LGBT characters who live, only four get happy endings. That’s four characters in 19 years. Behind the Candelabra won’t be eligible for any Academy Awards due to its cable TV distribution, but it’s keeping Oscar’s kill-the-gays mentality alive and kicking. Or rather, dying and haemorrhaging.’

From James Rawnson’s article ‘Why are gay characters at the top of Hollywood’s kill list?’ in The Guardian.

Lewd & Lascivious Trailer – Before Stonewall, see the birth of the San Francisco gay rights movement

June 11, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The documentary Lewd & Lascivious is having its world premiere at this years’ Frameline, the San Francisco LGBTQ film Festival at 1:30pm on June 22nd, at the Victoria Theater. It certainly looks like an interesting movie, taking a rare look at the gay rights movement before Stonewall (there’s a tendency to think nothing occurred before the 1969 riots).

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Who would have guessed that the dawn of the gay and lesbian civil rights movement in San Francisco was jump-started by straight ministers at a dance? This little-known, yet pivotal event happened the first day of 1965, and it was an occasion like never before. For the first time, all the fledgling “homophile” organizations came together as one to put on a costume ball to publicly reveal their community in a thoroughly respectable, yet overtly political, and queerly fabulous fashion! The twist was, they were rallied by progressive straight ministers who had witnessed, firsthand, the brutal police violence against this community and they were determined to do something about it. So when the SFPD showed up to try and shut the party down, the results were explosively historic!

‘Lewd & Lascivious recovers for today’s audiences the landmark event in American history when just being perceived as homosexual was reason enough to discriminate, and being caught in gay sexual activity was “Lewd and Lascivious Conduct” and could result in years-long prison sentences.

‘“We realized that not understanding homosexuality meant that we didn’t understand sexuality in general,” said the Rev. Ted McIllvenna, one of the instigators of the party, who went on to found the world famous Institute for Advanced Study of Human Sexuality in San Francisco, “We didn’t see this as a ‘gay’ issue, per say, we simply saw it as a human rights issue.” Lewd & Lascivious spotlights in lively interviews a number of famous personalities who speak from eye-witness accounts.

‘“It may have taken seven years to complete the film, but it was worth it to have these important characters in our history tell their stories on camera, especially now that two of them are no longer with us,” says Jallen Rix, Sexologist, Professor, and Director of Lewd & Lascivious.’ [Read more…]
