Any Day Now Trailer – Alan Cumming & Garret Dillahunt become accidental parents

December 13, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Any Day Now hits US cinemas tomorrow (December 14th), so we thought it was the perfect time to bring you the trailer for this gay themed movie, which is based on a true story.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Winner of 10 Audience Awards at film festivals around the country and starring the amazing Alan Cumming, ANY DAY NOW is a powerful tale of love, acceptance and family. When a teenager with Down syndrome (Isaac Leyva) is abandoned by his mother, a gay couple (Alan Cumming and Garret Dillahunt) takes him in and becomes the loving family he’s never had. But when their unconventional living arrangement is discovered by authorities, the men are forced to fight a biased legal system to save the life of the child they have come to love as their own. Inspired by a true story from the late 1970s, ANY DAY NOW touches on legal and social issues that are as relevant today as they were 35 years ago.’

Any Day Now is well worth a look when it comes your way.

Azul Y No Tan Rosa (Blue And Not So Pink) Trailer – Take a look at the Venezuelan gay-themed flick

December 6, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Azul Y No Tan Rosa was released to acclaim in Venezuela last week (November 30th) and is now rolling out across Latin America. We’ve just come across the trailer for Miguel Ferrari’s film, but unfortunately unless you can speak Spanish you’ll just have to guess what they’re saying as there are no subtitles. However you can still get a great feel for the film, which will hopefully hit English-speaking territories sometime soon.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘The story of Diego, a young and successful photographer that lives in the glamorous world of fashion, shallowness and excess. A tragic accident turns his world around; his partner is now in a coma. Unexpectedly, and right at this terrible time, Diego must take care of his son, Armando. Now, both of them have to adapt to each other; Armando to the unknown, homosexual world of his father, and Diego to the closed attitude of his teenage son.’

Five Dances Trailer – Movement merges with a gay romance

December 4, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Here’s a beautiful looking movie, especially for those who like a bit of dance and a touch of gay romance. As yet the movie hasn’t received its first screening, so there’s no clue at the moment as to when we might get to see it, but it’ll be interesting to see what Alan Brown does with dance after his intriguing gay military school makeover of Shakespeare in Private Romeo.

Plus we have to say, first time lead actor Ryan Steele is both hot and very good at the old dancing lark.

Here’s the synopsis from the film’s website: ‘The classic tale of finding success and romance in the big city is given a contemporary, and unconventional, spin in Alan Brown’s new film, FIVE DANCES. Collaborating with internationally renowned choreographer Jonah Bokaer, writer-director Brown has taken five gifted New York dancers, and fashioned a story about Chip (Ryan Steele in his first film role), an extraordinarily talented 18 year-old recently arrived from Kansas who joins a small downtown modern dance company. In his first weeks of rehearsal, Chip is initiated into the rites of passage of a New York dancer’s life, where discipline and endless hard work, camaraderie and competitiveness, the fear of not being good enough, and the joy of getting it just right, inform every minute of every day.

‘Shooting in and around a Soho dance studio, Brown and his longtime cinematographer Derek McKane capture the exhilaration and emotional turmoil of a small dance company, and all of Chip’s poignant firsts—the forging of friendships, being chosen for the important solo, his first ever love affair—with the intimacy and immediacy of a documentary. The result, FIVE DANCES, is Brown’s most dynamic film.’

Red Lodge Trailer – Take a look at the gay-themed Christmas film

November 14, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

If you want to make you festive season a little more gay, perhaps you could get hold of a copy of Red Lodge, which is now available in the US through the likes of Amazon & Circa 87. With Xmas just over a month away, we thought it was a good time to take a look at the trailer for the festive film.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Jordan proposes to his boyfriend Dave. The offer of marriage is accepted, and then quickly rejected – all in the days leading up to Christmas…with the family. Jordan must process his emotions during the happiest (if most distracting) time of the year. Adding to the distraction is his distant, adopted younger sister, her bio-technical engineering boyfriend, and his over-the-top, opinionated (and often inebriated) aunt. Jordan hasn’t broken up with his boyfriend. They simply haven’t discussed the issues between them.’

It looks like it could be a fun film, with humour and a bit of a social message behind it.

Apropos Of Nothing: 1995 Gay Guinness Ad Goes Viral

November 14, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Nowadays having gay people in adverts is rare but certainly not unheard of (for example Lloyds TSB has recently been trumpeting the addition of a gay couple to their ads featuring weird looking CGI people), but back in 1995 it was seen as so controversial that a Guinness ad featuring two gay men wasn’t just pulled before it aired, but the company even went so far as to deny it ever existed.

Now the ad has gone viral, giving us a look at what could have been. The commercial has been seen by thousands since a report on it went live recently on Ad Respect, which looked at why it was banned. They say, ‘Artfully shot with the help of maverick California-based British producer Tony Kaye, the UK tabloid press widely reported the planned ad before it aired, to much scandal. Pubs and consumers were shocked that the traditional brand would air a gay ad.

‘Fearing greater backlash by straight consumers, the TV spot was ultimately dropped by Guinness. Later, the company tried to deny that this spot even existed.“There was a desire by the agency and Guinness to have a certain ambiguity about it,” Kaye told the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. in 1997 about the ad he created. “So that when you watch the spot, you said, ‘Well are these guys gay or not?’ These guys are gay — the storytelling, to me, needed him to give the other guy a little peck on the cheek.”

‘When asked why the company would deny the existence of the ad he shot, Kaye offered, “Most of them have the vision of a dead rat. I think it was charming and it was very funny and would sell a hell of a lot of beer.”

It’s certainly a rather sweet ad and it’s a shame it never aired, although in 1995 it would have definitely been a surprise to many to see two men give each other a peck on the cheek in an advert. It doesn’t hurt either that both men ad very good looking. Take a look at it above.

New Clip From ‘Lesbian Werewolf’ Film Jack & Diane

October 26, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Jack And Diane has long been billed the ‘lesbian werewolf movie’, although that’s a bit of a misnomer. Bradley Rust Gray’s film follows the title characters (Juno Temple and Riley Keough) who are two teenage girls who meet in New York City and spend the night kissing ferociously. Diane’s charming innocence quickly begins to open Jack’s tough skinned heart. But when Jack discovers that Diane is moving she pushes her away. Unable to grasp her new feelings, Diane’s emotions begin to cause unexplainable violent changes to her body. Through these awkward and insecure feelings, the two girls must struggle to turn their first love into an enduring one. There are elements of horror to the film, but to call it a ‘lesbian werewolf movie’ isn’t quite right. The film premiered at Tribeca in April, and arrives in UK cinemas on November 2nd (sadly no UK release is currently set). Now a new clip has arrived, and you can take a look at a featurette about the movie below.

Men To Kiss International Trailer – Causing trouble in a gay relationship

October 20, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Robert Hasfogel’s German movie Men To Kiss has had great success on the film festival circuit, including winning two awards at the Bangalore Queer Filmfestival. It recently got a release in its own country, sadly we don’t know when it might reach the UK. However from the evidence of this trailer, it’ll be worth a look when it does.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘The gay couple Earnest and Tobias are being visited by Ernest’s old friend Uta. What at first looks like an innocent house-call, turns into an insidious attack on the couple’s relationship…’

It Gets Better Trailer – Gender and identity in modern Thailand

October 18, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

While the words ‘It Gets Better’ immediately bring to mind the campaign to try ensure bullied teens know that while things may be tough, there’s a silver lining, it’s also the name of a Thai film, looking at gender, sexuality and love in the country. The film traces three lives as they deal with social norms of gender, family and love in Thailand. Complete with an Alfa Romeo convertible and Jackie O sunglasses, a cosmopolitan woman finds herself in a rural village struggling with facing her small town roots, the person she has become, and the young lover who might complicate everything. Meanwhile, shame descends upon a family when a young boy is forced to become a monk after his widower father finds him dancing in his mother’s clothes. The third intertwined story is that of a young man who discovers that his estranged father has left him a cabaret that features ladyboy performers. Will he sell the club or will they charm him into honoring the stranger that was his father and keep the club open.

Two Weddings and a Funeral Trailer – LGBT movies go South Korean

October 9, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

I’m kind of intrigued by the growing number of gay-themed films emerging from South Korean and other Asian countries, partly because while we in the west have become increasingly used to movies about gay people, over there they’re still something of a novelty. As a result, they tend to tell stories that deal with themes and stories that come from the beginning of the LGBT story, almost as if they’re introducing audiences to gay people.

That seems to be true of South Korea’s Two Weddings And A Funeral, which is about a gay man who starts a fake relationship with a lesbian, so that they both have beard cover. Hyo-Jin (Ryoo Hyoun-Kyoung) is an obstetrician who really wants to adopt a baby with her girlfriend. To help make that possible, she arranges a fake marriage with Min-Soo (Kim Dong-Yoon), who is gay but wants his parents to think he’s straight.

The movie is currently doing the festival circuit, but there’s no info on when it might get a release in the west.

Jobriath A.D. Trailer – A gay rock ‘n’ roll star before his time

September 24, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

I have to admit I’d never heard of Jobriath, but perhaps that’s not that surprising. He was a flash in the pan before my birth, but as the new documentary Jobriath A.D. attempts to show, he was a very important and groundbreaking flash in terms of LGBT history.

Jobriath, born Bruce Wayne Campbell, was the first openly gay artist ever signed to a major record label, which almost amazingly happened back in 1972, when David Geffen (who is himself gay) signed him for the then astronomical $500,000. While he was given huge publicity and his debut album garnered generally positive reviews, the public wasn’t ready for a flamboyant star who actually admitted he was gay. The disc bombed amidst a hard backlash.

As many have commented, he was not the first camp, flamboyant, glam, seemingly ‘gay’ artist – it was, after all, a time when Bowie and Queen rode high in the charts – but actually saying the word publicly made a big difference at the time. Not long afterwards Jobriath’s music career was over, although he left a lasting legacy for acts that came after him, such as Soft Cell, Morrissey and Culture Club.

Tragically he became one of first celebrities to die of AIDS in 1983. Take a look at the trailer for what seems like it’ll be a fascinating documentary above, and find out more at the film’s website.
