Out There Trailer – Inside the world of gay farmers across the US

February 18, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

out-thereFarming isn’t the sort of career that you normally associate with queer people – although coming from a farming family myself and knowing a few gay farmers, I can personally attest that there are more of them around than you probably thought.

Out There takes a look at queer farmers across the US, with the documentary examining their lives and work. As Towleroad points out the film is touring the Mid-West and West Coast, from Milwaukee to Seattle, during February and March 2015.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Out Here is a full-length documentary film created by the Queer Farmer Film Project. Completed after 4 years in production, it looks at the experiences of queer farmers across the country and asks – what does it mean to be a queer farmer, is agriculture a safe space for queer people, and what are the relationships between food production and queerness? It is the filmmaker’s dream that this project will give voice and visibility to queer people in agriculture and inspire a flagrant national discussion about gender and sexuality as they are related to our food system.’

You can take a look at the trailer below. [Read more…]

Fulboy Teaser Trailer – Inside the homoerotic male gaze in the soccer-based film

February 18, 2015 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

fulboyIt may only be a minute long, but it’s enough time to make Fulboy look pretty sexy – and that’s without any actual sex, kissing or overtly erotic – just men playing football and getting changed (although you can play spot the testicle).

Fans of Marco Berger (Hawaii, Absent, Plan B) might not be surprised to hear he’s one of the film’s producers, as it has a similar aesthetic to some of his work.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘On the verge of achieving his dream career, Tomás allows his older brother Martín Farina an inside look at his life as a professional football player. Martín, never able to fulfill his own dream of playing football, steps into the world of Tomás and his teammates through the lens of his camera. However, the rest of the club has their own opinions – some viewing Martín as an intruder, as he exposes their most vulnerable moments, and their concerns for the future after the game has ended.

‘Fulboy offers an uncensored, confessional look at how the athletes behind the most popular sport in the world behave during their time off the field. At the same time, Fulboy reflexively interrogates Farina’s aesthetic choices and point-of-view – as well as the viewer’s gaze at the male form.’

TLA Releasing will release Fulboy later this year. [Read more…]

Full BFI Flare London LGBT Film Festival Programme Revealed

February 18, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

michael-franco-quinto-pic1The full programme of the 2015 edition of BFI Flare: London LGBT Film Festival was released tonight at a public programme launch at BFI Southbank (and lucky old us, we were there). The festival will take place 19th-29th March 2015 at BFI Southbank. BFI Flare is one of the UK’s leading LGBT film event and one of the world’s longest established, with over 50 features, more than one hundred shorts and a wide range of special events, guest appearances, discussions, workshops and more. Tickets go on sale via www.bfi.org.uk/flare on 25th February for BFI members and 2nd March for non members.

As previously announced and Direct from premieres at Sundance and Berlin Film Festivals, the festival opens with the UK Premiere of I AM MICHAEL. A feature directorial debut for Gus Van Sant protégé Justin Kelly, the film stars James Franco and Zachary Quinto in a powerful interrogation of gay identity through the real-life story of Michael Glatze, who went from crusading gay journalist to anti-gay pastor.

As evidence of the strength of documentary work in this year’s Festival, the Closing Night gala will feature the European Premiere of director Malcolm Ingram’s highly topical and rousing OUT TO WIN, charting the experience of LGBT sportspeople working in the highest echelons of professional sport. Featuring contributions from such pioneers as Billie Jean King, Martina Navratilova, David Kopay, John Amaechi and Jason Collins, Ingram returns to the Festival after previously having screened documentaries SMALL TOWN GAY BAR and CONTINENTAL.

Director David Thorpe delivers the Accenture Gala with the European Premiere of DO I SOUND GAY?, a documentary exploring the provocative idea of whether there is a ‘gay voice’ and featuring humorous, insightful contributions from performers and comedians including Margaret Cho, David Sedaris, George Takei and Dan Savage.

The Centrepiece Screening, the UK Premiere of STORIES OF OUR LIVES, directed by Jim Chu Chu is a drama adapted from real testimonies of LGBT Kenyans (where the film is banned for promoting homosexuality). Fresh from winning a Teddy Jury Prize at the Berlin Film Festival, this is powerful cinema but also essential viewing for those who are concerned about global human rights.

The festival offers rich cinematic insight into LGBT lives and loves around the world with films from the USA, France, UK, Spain, Netherlands, Denmark, Sweden, Germany, Poland, Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, Canada, Australia, Greece and India plus the first LGBT film from Sri Lanka (FRANGIPANI).

February 17, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

dickumentaryHave you ever thought that you simply don’t know about the penis? Well, this could be the film for you, as it takes a long, hard look at the thing between men’s legs, from the reverence paid to it by ancient cultures to the modern obsession with size..

Here’s the synopsis: ‘The Dickumentary tells the story of the penis- from its evolution as a biological structure millions of years ago in prehistoric fish, to today. Cultures have worshipped it, and circumcised it. Men have sought ways to make it larger. Traveling across 14 countries, featuring interviews with more than 40 experts, it’s an epic journey through a subject that doesn’t get talked about nearly enough in polite society.’

New Mommy Trailer – Take a fresh look at queer filmmaker Xavier Dolan’s latest movie

February 17, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

mommy-uk-quadIt’s taken a while to get Mommy to the UK. Last May the movie picked up and Cannes Jury Prize, but it’s only now that queer filmmaker Xavier Dolan’s (Tom At The Farm, Laurence Anyways) movie is preparing for its British release on March 20th, and ahead of that a new trailer has arrived.

The delay is likely because the movie was Canada’s official Best Foreign Language Film Oscar and the distributors were hoping to tie the release to that, but unfortunately it missed out on a nomination.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘A passionate widowed single mom (Anne Dorval) finds herself burdened with the full-time custody of her unpredictable 15-year-old ADHD son (Antoine Olivier Pilon). As they struggle to make ends meet, Kyla (Suzanne Clément), the peculiar new neighbour across the street, offers her help. Together, they strive for a new sense of balance.

‘Mommy is directed, written and produced by Xavier Dolan and stars Anne Dorval, Suzanne Clément and Antoine Olivier Pilon’

Darren Criss Will Return To Broadway For Hedwig And The Angry Inch

February 17, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

darren-crissIn what is becoming a bit of a tradition, the new name for the man playing the title role in Hedwig And The Inch has been announced, so we now know that the show’s creator John Cameron Mitchell will be replaced by Glee’s Darren Criss.

It’s not Darren’s first time of Broadway, as while best known for playing Blaine in the musical TV show, he also had a successful run on the Great White Way in How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying. Criss follows Neil Patrick Harris, Andrew Rannells, Michael C. Hall and the recent stint from John Cameron Mitchell in Hedwig’s title role. It’s an extremely impressive for a show that many initially thought was a bit of a vanity project for Neil Patrick Harris and wouldn’t survive on Broadway after he left it behind.

John Cameron Mitchell was supposed to be leaving in February but he’s now extended his run through April, with Criss taking over for a 12-week run starting April 29th.

Hedwig is the show’s East German title character, who was left with an angry inch after a botched sex change operation that she had in order to get into the US with her American GI lover. Hedwig then started dating young Tommy Gnosis, who left her behind when he took her music and became a rock star – leaving her understandably bitter (but still very funny).

Hopefully we’ll get to see Criss in the glittery makeup and Platinum wig soon.

Nasty Baby Wins Teddy Award For Best LGBT Film At The Berlin Film Festival

February 14, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

nasty-babyThere are lots of film festivals that give awards to LGBT-themed films, but there’s no doubt that one of the most important is the Teddy Award, handed out each year at the Berlin International Film Festival. It has a good history of picking great movies, including Ira Sachs’ excellent Keep The Lights On, Marco Berger’s Absent, Lisa Cholodenko’s The Kids Are All Right and John Cameron Mitchell’s Hedwig And The Angry Inch, along with last year’s winner, the wonderful The Way He Looks.

Now this year’s Teddys have been given out, with Sebastian Silva’s Nasty Baby taking the Best Feature prize. The movie stars Silva, alongside Kristen Wiig and Tunde Adebimpe, and centres on ‘Freddy, an artist whose desire for a baby has become something of an obsession.’ Freddy’s boyfriend is happy to have a child, and their friend Polly (Wiig) agrees to carry it, but the growing obsession may lead them to take a life. It’s described as a savagely satirical portrait of a group of presumptuous and self-absorbed bohemians.

The Best Documentary prize went to Aldo Garay’s El hombre nuevo (The New Man), about a trans* woman who was born in Nicaragua but raised in Uruguay, who returns to rediscover her home country. The Jury Prize meanwhile was handed to Stories Of Our Lives, an anthology of five short films about LGBT life in Kenya.

Here’s the full list of 2015 winners:

Best feature film: Nasty Baby – Sebastián Silva
Best documentary: El hombre nuevo – Aldo Garay
Best short film: San Cristobal – Omar Zúñiga Hidalgo
Jury award: Stories of Our Lives – Jim Chuchu
Special award: Udo Kier

Brandon Routh Wishes He Was Still Playing Gay In Sitcom Partners

February 14, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

brandon-routhA couple of years ago it looked like gay people were going to take over US TV comedy, with Ryan Murphy’s The New Normal (about a gay couple having a baby), and Partners, which saw a couple of friends, one of them gay, going into business together.

However neither of them got past their first season, and with Partners not all of the 13 episodes that were made got a network airing in the US.

There’s one person who’s still smarting about the cancellation, Brandon Routh, who played Michael Urie’s boyfriend in Partners.

He tells xfinity, “I had such fun with that character and working with the fabulously talented Michael Urie and David [Krumholtz] and Sophia [Bush] and Max [Mutchnick, co-creator] and David [Kohan, co-creator] and everybody. That was one of those that still, we were on the right recipe and such a good family.”

He adds, “I get people all the time at conventions a lot say, ‘Oh, Partners was so great.’ A lot in Canada because they got to see, I think they might have gotten a few more episodes than we (in the US) got to see. I hear from people on Twitter in South Africa where they got to see all 13 episodes, they released all of them there.”

Routh also talks about he’s grateful for his gay fans, saying “I appreciate the support from everyone. Thankfully, the world, society, is coming to a more rational thought process about sexuality.”

Brandon has recently joined Arrow playing Ray Palmer, aka Atom. You can check out a great image of him in costume here.

Global Warming Trailer – Sexy gay short films go international in the upcoming DVD

February 12, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

global-warming-trailerRather than making one film, director Reid Waterer has come up with four and put them together under the title Global Warming. The gay shorts selection gets its name because it wants to take us around the world – both literally and metaphorically – from India to Greece, taking a look at gay life in various places countries, all in amongst plenty of steamy, sexually-charged shenanigans.

It includes one film about a man who falls in love with an Indian guy while on a business trip, another about a gay man who relationship with his daughter has become difficult, a third sees a man on holiday in Greece getting a crush on the guy he’s bunking with, while the final film is about two straight actors who find themselves having to choreograph their very first gay sex scene.

The film is due out on DVD in the UK on February 23rd, so watch out for our review next week. Before then though you can check out the new trailer below. [Read more…]
