Did The Gay Secrets Behind Testament Of Youth Lead To A Young Man’s Tragic Death?

January 15, 2015 By Tim Isaac 5 Comments

taron-egerton-testament-of-youthThe new film version of Vera Brittain’s classic First World War memoir Testament Of Youth arrives in UK cinemas on January 16th. It tells the true story of Brittain and three young men during the war, showing both how Vera’s experiences as a nurse changed her and how the carnage of war decimated an entire generation of young men.

However while it is a true story, it may not be the whole truth – as it could be missing how the fate of one of the young men who is central to the story, might have been tied to his sexuality. To be fair, the movie is actually more upfront than the book, as while Brittain’s tome has extremely vague allusions that her brother, Edward (played by Taron Egerton), had ‘difficulty’ with women, the film is a little more explicit on what that difficulty might have been.

There may have been much more to the story though, as Vera Brittain biographer Mark Bostridge believes that Edward had several affairs with men and the discovery of this may have led to his death. The official account, as recounted in Testament Of Youth, is that Edward was killed by a sniper – the only officer who died in a June 1918 attack against Austrian forces on the plateau of Asiago in the Italian Alps. The Oscar Nominations Are Here, With Imitation Game Leading The LGBT Charge!

January 15, 2015 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

oscars-neil-patrick-harrisThe race is on! The Oscar nominations have been announced, so we now know the people and movies that will be vying for a win when the gongs are handed out February 22nd at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood.

As expected it’s a relatively open field, with no films looking like it’s going to sweep the board, but quite a few now teed up to go for Oscar glory. As expected there was a good showing for both Birdman and Boyhood. However there are others who’ve done well too, including The Imitation Game, The Grand Budapest Hotel, The Theory Of Everything and American Sniper.

All of those movie showed up in the Best Picture race, which also includes Selma and Whiplash. Likewise they dominated the Best Director race, with only Theory Of Everything’s James Marsh and Oscar fave Clint Eastwood (American Sniper) missing out on nominations.

In the Best Actor race there were no surprises – indeed it was exactly as most predicted – with Steve Carell (Foxcatcher), Bradley Cooper (American Sniper), Benedict Cumberbatch (The Imitation Game), Michael Keaton (Birdman) and Eddie Redmayne (The Theory of Everything). It’s a slightly more unpredictable race in the Best Actress race, with Marion Cotillard (Two Days, One Night), Felicity Jones (The Theory of Everything), Julianne Moore (Still Alice), Rosamund Pike (Gone Girl), and Reese Witherspoon (Wild).

It’s a rather mixed picture for LGBT movies, as while The Imitation Game’s eight nominations is undoubtedly good, that’s pretty much it, especially amongst the major categories. There had previously been high hopes for some gay-themed movies in both the Best Documentary and Best Foreign Language Film categories, but in the end none of them made the cut. And with Imitation Game not expected to win any major awards, it could be a bit of a gay drought. Well, sort of, as with Neil Patrick Harris presenting, we won’t be completely forgotten.

It’s a particular shame that Pride got nothing, as with the right marketing the movie should have had a good showing amongst the nominations, as it’s undoubtedly one of the best movies released in the past 12 months. Unfortunately it got absolutely nothing.

But then, it wasn’t the only way the Academy showed they were morons this morning, as they missed the awesome Lego Movie off the Best Animated Movie list, while including the far inferior (but still decent) Big Hero Six. If that wasn’t evidence they’re not very good at this nominating business, I don’t know what is.

You can take a look at the full list of nominees below: [Read more…]

CSI: NY’s Gary Sinise Pulls Out Of Appearance At Anti-Gay Catholic Group’s Summit

January 13, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

gary-siniseIf you’re a celebrity these days you really need to do your research. When Forrest Gump and CSI: New York star Gary Sinise signed up to make an appearance at a summit organised by the Catholic organisation Legatus, he probably thought it was a relatively innocuous gig.

However once his involvement was made public many – most notably Good As You – were quick to point out that Legatus has a long history of anti-gay actions, including continuing to insist same sex attractions as a ‘disorder’, promoting ex-gay therapies, publishing articles against any extension of gay rights, and supporting the president of the notoriously angry and homophobic, National Organisation For Marriage.

The furore has now caused Sinise to drop out of the Summit, issuing a statement saying, ‘For me, faith has been a catalyst for my mission to honor the men and women who serve in our nation’s military. When I accepted the invitation to speak at the Legatus conference on Veterans issues and share my story, I was unaware of the controversy surrounding some of the participants, and their views on personal matters. I don’t want my mission — which is designed to be unifying — to be disrupted by these, or any controversies, and therefore have decided to withdraw.’

He’s not the only one, as Fox News anchor Bret Baier has also dropped, with a spokeman saying, ‘Bret accepted the invitation to speak about his book, his faith, and his son’s congenital heart disease. He was unaware of these articles or the controversy surrounding them.’

New York’s Cardinal Dolan and Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal are both still due to attend, and seeing as neither of them exactly have great pro-gay credentials, they probably won’t bother to pull out.

Nominees Announced For Gay & Lesbian Entertainment Critics’ Dorian Awards

January 12, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

dorian2015-nomineesThe Golden Globes may be over and the Oscars may be a month away, but what is undoubtedly the most important gongs of the year have just announced their nominees – the Dorian Awards, as handed out by GALECA (Gay & Lesbian Entertainment Critics Association). And yes, part of the reason it’s the most important is that I’m a member, but of course that doesn’t sway my opinion of it at all.

GALECA is comprised of over 100 critics and entertainment journalists, who’ve picked their nominations across 25 categories, from mainstream to LGBTQ-centric, including four newly-added runs, such as Film Director of the Year, TV Director of the Year and Music Video of the Year. GALECA’s mission to honor content ‘from mainstream to gaystream’ has led to an unusually wide variety of nominations and winners since its inception in 2009. For example the organisation’s previous choices for Film of the Year include those that have gone on to Oscar success, such as 12 Years a Slave and Argo, along with less lauded (but equally worthy) fare like Weekend, I Am Love and A Single Man.

Amongst this year’s nominations, Birdman has the edge with four noms in the movie categories, including Film of the Year, while Michael Keaton is up for for Film Performance of the Year – Actor. Just behind are The Grand Budapest Hotel, The Imitation Game and the crowd-pleaser Pride, about blue-collar miners and LGBTQs standing united for a cause.

In the TV categories, the transgender-comes-out-to-their-family dramedy, Transparent, leads with five nominations, including nods for star Jeffrey Tambor and creator Jill Soloway (for TV Director of the Year). The Normal Heart, Orange is the New Black and the new drama How to Get Away with Murder (for TV Drama of the Year, star Viola Davis and Campy TV Show) are also well-represented.

LGBTQ-specific categories for TV and film have their own surprises. For example in the LGBTQ Film Of The Year category, the mainstream success The Imitation Game is nominated alongside the likes of The Way He Looks – a movie that grossed less than $100,000 on its US release.

One winner is known already, as Star Trek icon and LGBTQ-rights activist, George Takei, has been named Timeless Star. GALECA has previously awarded such luminaries as Lily Tomlin and Sir Ian McKellen with this career achievement honor.

This winners will be announced on Tuesday, January 20th, with the group’s annual, free-wheeling Winners Toast set for Sunday, March 1, in Los Angeles.

Iris Prize LGBT Film Festival Reveals Bigger Main Award As It Opens For Submissions

January 12, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

iris-prize-slideEvery year the Iris Prize Festival – the celebration of LGBT-themed short films which takes place in Cardiff each autumn – gets bigger and better, and this year that includes the main prize itself. Organisers of the Iris Prize have today confirmed that the Iris Prize, awarded to the best LGBT short film, has been increased from £25,000 to £30,000 thanks to the generous support of The Michael Bishop Foundation.

“We are delighted that that The Michael Bishop Foundation has generously increased their support of the Iris Prize. Together with the sponsorship from Pinewood Studios, Gorilla Post and Martin Briggs ,we now have a total prize fund of £45,000. This significant fund, at a time of continued austerity, allows Iris to continue supporting new LGBT film making,” said Festival Chair Andrew Pierce.

The organisers also confirmed that the family of Partner Festivals, who each nominate one short film to compete for the Iris Prize, will include a festival from China. The Shanghai PRIDE Film Festival, established in 2009, takes place annually in June in a country with an estimated 50 million LGBT people.

“We are thrilled to welcome Shanghai into the Iris family. This brings the total number of countries where we have a direct relationship to 13. Add to this the number of open submissions from non-partner countries and I think we can confidently state that Iris represents the global LGBT film making community,” said Festival Chair Andrew Pierce.

Submissions are now open for the 2015 Iris Prize Festival. The Cardiff based Festival, which takes place from 7th – 11th October 2015, presents three main awards:
Iris Prize – Cardiff’s International LGBT short film prize supported by The Michael Bishop Foundation
Iris Prize Best British Short sponsored by Pinewood Studios Group
Iris Prize Best Feature Award sponsored by Martin Briggs

“Thanks to the generous support of The Michael Bishop Foundation, the Iris Prize continues to be the only LGBT short film prize in the world which allows the winner to make a new film. Iris is more than just a trophy that gathers dust or a certificate that yellows on the wall. Iris is what film makers need – funding, support and guidance,” said Festival Director Berwyn Rowlands.

“6 short films have been produced to date by the Iris Prize with award winning filmmakers from across the world, including the Sundance Film Festival who selected Followers, written, directed and edited by Tim Marshall. Followers, the 6th short film produced by the Iris Prize, was selected from 8,200 entries to screen at the premier North America based festival following in the footsteps of Burger, which screened at Sundance last year.”

“I’m very proud of our track record in supporting new talent, having worked with film makers from all over the world and look forward to working with Brendan McDonall from Australia who will be responsible for the 7th short film,” he added.

Details about submitting films can be found here: http://www.irisprize.org/submissions-guidelines/

Matt Bomer & Transparent Win At The Golden Globes

January 12, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

matt-bomerMatt Bomer is certainly having a great week. Just a few days after picking up a People’s Choice award he’s won himself a Golden Globe for his excellent performance as an HIV+ man in The Normal Heart.

That wasn’t the only LGBT interest at the Globes, as Amazon’s original TV series Transparent did well, picking up both Best Television Series – Comedy Or Musical, and Best Actor In A Television Series – Comedy Or Musical for Jeffrey Tambor. Transparent creator Jill Soloway dedicated the show’s award to Leelah Alcorn, a transgender teen who recently took her life, leaving a heartbreaking suicide note online. Tambor meanwhile dedicated his win to the transgender community.

This year’s Oscar race is pretty open, but last night’s Golden Globes have helped point out the frontrunners. The big winners in the Best Film races were Boyhood for Drama and The Grand Budapest Hotel for Comedy Or Musical. Boyhood also took Best Director for Richard Linklater, putting it in good stead for a major showing at this Thursday’s Oscar nominations.

In the film acting races, Eddie Redmayne took best actor in a Drama for The Theory of Everything while Julianne Moore won the Actress award for Still Alice. For Comedy Or Musical Amy Adams won best actress for Big Eyes, with Michael Keaton taking best actor for Birdman. Patricia Arquette won best supporting actress for her role in Boyhood, while J.K. Simmons won Whiplash best supporting actor for.

Despite numerous nominations, The Imitation Game, about gay hero Alan Turing, walked away with nothing, while Pride, which was a surprise nominee in the Best Picture – Musical Or Comedy race, couldn’t continue to surprise with a win. Matt Bomer was the only win for the acclaimed Normal Heart, with Fargo winning the Best TV Movie or Mini-Series award that many thought Heart could walk away with. Orange Is The New Black also failed to pick up a gong, despite scoring three nominations.

imitation-game-poster2-slideThe BAFTA nominations are out, with The Grand Budapest Hotel leading the way (perhaps surprisingly) with 11 nominations. HBO Comes Onboard For Matt Bomer’s Biopic Of Gay Star Montgomery Clift

January 7, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

montgomery-clift-matt-bomerFor quite a long time now Matt Bomer has been involved in developing a biopic of gay/bisexual actor Montgomery Clift (we first reported on it back in September 2013), however it’s always been clear that while there many thought it was a good idea – not least because of the resemblance between Bomer & Clift – getting the funding has been tough.

However now HBO, which has had huge success with gay-themed original movies such as Behind The Candelabra and The Normal Heart, has stepped in to help develop the project, according to THR.

Christopher Lovick wrote the initial script, but Love is Strange scribes Ira Sachs and Mauricio Zacharias have recently been asked to come in and work on the screenplay. It’s currently going by the simple title, Monty Clift.

In the late 40s and early 50s, Clift was on the path to becoming one of the biggest stars in the world. After The Heiress, Red River, A Place In The Sun, I Confess and From Here To Eternity, he was a true heart-throb with three Oscar nominations to his name. In many people’s opinion he was a talent on a par with James Dean and Marlon Brando – and all that by the age of 24.

However, Clift was also gay (or at least bisexual) at a time when homosexuality was illegal. He never really came to terms with his sexuality. He suffered from severe self-loathing throughout his adult life (as did many gay people back them) and became a severe alcoholic. In 1956, during the filming of Raintree County, he crashed his car while drunk which caused various injuries, including facial lacerations that meant he was never quite as good looking again. While he continued to work, with a prominent facial scar and alcohol quickly ageing him, his roles were limited and his days as a heart-throb were essentially over.

It’s believed the movie will look at much of his complicated life, but will concentrate on his relationship with Elizabeth Taylor, who became one of his closest friends after they starred in A Place In The Sun (it was while driving back from her house that he had his car crash). She was aware of his sexuality but later suggested it was difficult to truly help him, as he was so internally tormented.

The cable network’s involvement in the biopic is good news for Bomer, as back in July – around the time he was getting huge acclaim for his turn in The Normal Heart – he suggested that he thought the perfect home for the biopic would be HBO..

There isn’t a director currently attached, although as Ira Sachs is now co-writing, it wouldn’t be surprising if he ended up helming, even if it is a bit of a departure from the likes of Love Is Strange and Keep The Lights On.

Gay-Themed Short Film, We Are Okay Now, About A Teen In Love With His Straight Friend, Seeks Funding

January 7, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

We-Are-Okay-NowSometimes with Kickstarter campaigns for gay-themed films, the funding targets are so huge it’s clear those behind it are being way too ambitious. It’s nice then to get one that’s almost the other way around, as a group of young Danish filmmakers are seeking just 6,000kr (about £630 or $960) to get their planned short film, We Are Okay Now, made.

It’s also good that once its made, they’re hoping to make it freely available for all to watch.

They say, ‘We are a small group of young film workers seeking to finance a Danish short film titled; “We Are Okay Now” (original title; “Vi er okay nu”). Your funding will primarily contribute to rental of fim equipment as the entire team is working without pay and all resources are focused around ensuring the best quality for the film.

‘The storyline is quite simplistic and involves themes of adolescence, homosexuality, sexual abuse,  friendship and guilt. It revolves around the two best friends Jonnah and Demitri and takes place in the course of a night and the following morning. Jonnah is shown to be in love with Demitri and although the latter is straight and has no romantic interest in his friend, their relationship is very physical and loving. A recent traumatic experience however looms over them and affects the way they behave towards each other.

‘The film is being produced to be publicly available to everyone on social sites such as Youtube and Vimeo as well as to be entered in various film festivals. As of now it is an independent production without a production company.’

If you want to help out and put in a little cash, head over the Kickstarter.

Pride Director Matthew Warchus Says He ‘Understands’ Why All Gay References Were Removed From The US DVD Cover

January 7, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

pride-better-slideIn the last few days there’s been a firestorm of protest about the fact that the DVD cover of the US version of the film Pride removed all reference to homosexuality, despite the fact gay visibility is one of the main themes of the movie. What made people most angry wasn’t just that the blurb of the back cover ‘straightwashed’ the plot, but that one of the images had been photoshopped to remove a banner referencing the main group in the movie, ‘Lesbians & Gay Support The Miners’.

Now the film’s director, Matthew Warchus, has stepped forward with his thoughts on the DVD cover. Talking to BBC Radio 5’s Phil Williams, he said that, “Changing the cover is kind of clumsy and a bit foolish, but this is a film that is loved by people of all political persuasions and sexual orientations. I’m just keen for as many people who have yet to see the film to see it.”

He added, “I think someone in the marketing department in the US used their marketing judgement to try to remove any barrier to the widest possible audience. It’s clumsily done but I understand it and it’s a valid instinct.”

He also talked about “the nature of marketing” being “over-simplification [and] reductive”, as well as that he “didn’t want to preach to the converted” and hoped the movie would “find a mainstream audience [and] broaden people’s minds”.

Although we can understand what Warchus is saying, there are ways of appealing to a broad audience without creating a cover that effectively feels like it’s lying (by omission) about the movie, as well as going against its spirit.

While CBS Films owns the distribution rights to the film in the US, it’s believed that when they handed the DVD release to Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, they also took control of the DVD cover and that if was them who made the alterations.

Despite the controversy, Pride continued to be extremely well received, winning several awards at the British Independent Film Awards last month, and also scoring a Golden Globe Best Film nomination. (Quotes via PinkNews) [Read more…]
