Bryan Singer Becomes The Daddy Of A Baby Boy With Actress Michelle Clunie

January 7, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

bryan-singer-michelle-clunie-babyBack in October it was revealed that X-Men director Bryan Singer was expecting a baby with Queer As Folk actress and friend, Michelle Clunie. Now the day has come and Clunie has given birth, with Singer Tweeting the news, saying ‘Michelle Clunie and I would like to welcome our beautiful son Dashiell Julius William Clunie~Singer into the world :)’

Although for most of his career Singer has been publicly thought of as being gay, last year in an interview he revealed that he was actually bisexual and that he’s allow the gay status to stand as news about his sexuality had initially come out by ‘osmosis’ and that it was an ‘easy answer… because sexuality is so complex’.

He did also say though that eventually he expects he’ll end up in a relationship with a man.

Singer and Clunie were previously a couple, but for the past two decades they have mainly been best friends. Clunie has recently said of their relationship, ‘We dated. We broke up. He came out to me. We still loved each other and so made a pact we would start a family together some day.’

They plan to live extremely close together so that they can fully co-parent their child.

It’s certainly better news for Singer that he had to deal with last year, when he was accused of underage sexual abuse and forcible rape, by a main claiming the event took place in the late 1990s. However the case against him collapsed due to major issues with the credibility of his accuser, and Singer’s claims he could prove he wasn’t in Hawaii at the time the events there were supposed to have taken place. Buffy’s Amber Benson Proud The Show ‘Kicked The Door Open For Gays On TV’

January 7, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

buffy-willow-tara1999 was a bit of a watermark year for gay representation on US television. Will & Grace was growing into a major hit (having premiered in late 1998), Jack came out on Dawson’s Creek, and in the world of Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Willow (Alyson Hannigan) and Tara (Amber Benson) fell in love.

What was particularly unusual about Willow & Tara is not just that they were a same-sex couple – which was rare enough at the time – but that were shown as affectionate, sexual and affected by the same issues any couple faces, not just dealing with ‘gay issues’.

During a recent Reddit AMA, Benson talked about the pride she feels for having been part of the Buffy universe, saying “The most rewarding thing about playing Tara was that the relationship on Buffy between her and Willow helped kick open the door for more amazing LGBTQ characters on TV. We were so blessed to walk in their shoes and play those ladies. It’s one of the things I am most proud of in my life.”

Others online during the chat responded by talking about how important Tara & Willow were to them, such as one saying, “The only reason I knew it was okay to come out to my mother was because she told me how adorable she thought Willow and Tara were. She’d never said anything else for or against gay people so I had no idea before that.”

Benson added, “I feel very blessed to have played Tara on Buffy. It wasn’t about gratuitous making-out scenes. It was about two people who just happened to be of the same gender falling in love. [Joss Whedon] wrote real characters. He wasn’t trying to fill quotas. He was trying to create two people who just happened to be gay.”

US Queer As Folk Cast & Crew Plan Texas Reunion Event This Summer

January 7, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

queer-as-folk-us-castIt’s 15 years since the US version of Queer As Folk first appeared on TV and 10 years since it ended, so to mark that milestone Variety reports that the cast and crew are set to reunite this summer at the ATX Television Festival in Austin, Texas, for a panel event.

Those already planning to attend include exec producers Ron Cowen and Daniel Lipman, along with cast members Gale Harold, Peter Paige, Robert Gant, Scott Lowell, Michelle Clunie and Thea Gill. There’s no news on whether the likes of Randy Harrison and Hal Spark are also thinking about showing up.

Festival co-exec directors Caitlin McFarland and Emily Gipson comment, “We strive for diverse and revolutionary programming, and this groundbreaking series changed the game for cable television in 2000, marking a high point not only for the LGBT community, but for socially important storytelling.”

It’s the latest announcement for a big year for ATX looking back on TV hits of the recent past, as Lauren Graham and Alexis Bledel are also due to show up for a Gilmore Girls reunion, while there’ll also be a panel featuring writers from Dawson’s Creek.

The festival runs June 4-7.

Actor Chris Lowell Sounds Off On His Dislike Of Gay ‘Caricatures’ In Movies

January 7, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

chris-lowell-bellomagThe moment Chris Lowell was introduced in the pilot for Private Practice – where he was shirtless and dripping wet – he gained an awful lot of gay fans, in addition to those he’d already gathered from his work in Veronica Marx. Since then he’s been seen in the likes of The Help and the short-lived TV series Enlisted, as well as gaining a bit of attention as a photographer (with some of the more prurient amongst us enjoying that doesn’t always wear a huge amount of clothes in his self portraits).

He’s also a big supporter of the LGBT community, and his recent directorial debut, Beside Still Waters, included a gay couple. The movie has been described as being a bit of a millennial Big Chill, featuring a group of old friends reuniting and sharing memories and secrets, shortly after the death of one of their fathers.

Now Lowell has been talking to Rage Monthly about his issues with how gay people are normally represented on screen, saying ‘I get very frustrated at how LGBTs are portrayed in movies and on television. Often times, they’re just broad, foppish, loud caricatures. I wanted to have a character in the film that went against those tropes. On top of that, I didn’t feel it necessary to explain why he “has to be gay,” which is something, for some stupid reason, that film and television seems to think they need an explanation for.’

Henry Cavill & Armie Hammer Get Very Close In A New Man From U.N.C.L.E. Pic

January 7, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

man-from-uncle-vespa-slide2Ah, the joys of cropping. You cut down an image like the one above and suddenly it looks like Henry Cavill & Armie Hammer have been caught getting a bit too up close and personal in the street, but when you take a look at the full pic below, you can understand exactly why Hammer is positioned that way behind the Man Of Steel.

The image is a new one from the upcoming Man From U.N.C.L.E. movie, which is due in cinemas this August.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Henry Cavill (“Man of Steel”) stars as Napoleon Solo opposite Armie Hammer (“The Social Network”) as Illya Kuryakin in director Guy Ritchie’s action adventure “The Man from U.N.C.L.E.,” a fresh take on the hugely popular 1960s television series.

‘Set against the backdrop of the early 1960s, at the height of the Cold War, “The Man from U.N.C.L.E.” centers on CIA agent Solo and KGB agent Kuryakin. Forced to put aside longstanding hostilities, the two team up on a joint mission to stop a mysterious international criminal organization, which is bent on destabilizing the fragile balance of power through the proliferation of nuclear weapons and technology. The duo’s only lead is the daughter of a vanished German scientist, who is the key to infiltrating the criminal organization, and they must race against time to find him and prevent a worldwide catastrophe.’

We’re hoping that the homoerotic undertones between the guys don’t just end with cuddling up on a vespa, but we’ll have to wait and see.

Watch Benedict Cumberbatch’s Emotional Film Festival Speech About ‘Gay Icon’ Alan Turing

January 5, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

imitation-game-slideOne of the honorees at this year’s Palm Springs International Film Festival is Benedict Cumberbatch, who turned up on Sunday night to pick up the ensemble cast award for The Imitation Game and took the opportunity to give an impassioned speech about the film’s subject, Alan Turing.

As the movie shows, Turing was gay at a time when that was illegal in the UK. He helped the Allies crack some of the most fiendish German codes during World War II, with many crediting his work with shortening the conflict by two years. However in the early 1950s he was convicted of taking part in homosexual activity, chemically castrated, shunned from academia and he later killed himself.

In part he said, “Alan Turing was a war hero, he was a gay icon and he was and is the father of modern computing science. He is a man who died tragically early due to a Government that he helped free from fascism by his work in the Second World War in cracking the enigma code, rewarding him for his nature, for confessing to who he was as a gay man in a time of intolerance in the 1950s.”

You can take a look at the speech below.

Although there have been some who feel The Imitation Game underplays Turing’s sexuality, there is little doubt about Cumberbatch’s pro-LGBT credentials, having even officiated a friend’s same sex wedding. [Read more…]

CBS Films ‘Looking Into’ Why References To Homosexuality Were Removed From Pride US DVD Cover

January 5, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

pride-clip-slideThere’s been some ire over the weekend after various outlets (including BGPS) reported that the cover for the recently released US DVD of the gay-themed movie Pride doesn’t just omit all reference to homosexuality from the blurb, but also edits the main image on the back cover to completely remove a banner referring to the film’s main group, ‘Lesbians & Gays Support The Miners’.

The changes don’t just seem to have caught the general public by surprise, but also CBS Films, which owns the US rights to the movie and which released the movie in cinemas. However for the DVD release they passed things over to Sony Pictures, who handle their home entertainment releases and who brought the movie out on DVD in the US.

On Sunday, CBS Films took to Twitter, responding to Pink News’ initial story about the changes to the DVD cover, saying, ‘@pinknews we’re looking into this now and our page for the film remains the same as it has for months: http://cbsfilms.com/pride/‘.

It appears Sony Pictures is yet to make any comments. Some are also wondering whether, although CBS Films’ remarks suggest they’ve been taken by surprise, they really had no idea these changes had been made.

The BBC meanwhile quotes Ben Roberts, director of the BFI film fund, which backed Pride, as saying: “I’m not surprised that the US distributors have taken a decision to sell more copies by watering down the gay content. I’m not defending it, it’s wrong and outmoded, but I’m not surprised.

“It’s an unfortunate commercial reality both here and in the US that distributors have to deal with and consider in getting films onto the shop shelf. LGBT material is largely marginalised outside of rare hits like Brokeback Mountain.”

Pride follows a group of lesbians and gay men from London in the 1980s, who decide to raise funds to support striking miners, who are fighting against Margaret Thatcher’s plans to shut down their pits. However they soon discover that many miners, including their national union, don’t want to take money from a bunch of gays, until a small Welsh village agrees to take the cash. This marks the beginning of an unexpected bond between the big city gays and the tiny, rural mining community.

You can take a look at a comparison between the original Pride image and the photoshopped US DVD cover version below. [Read more…]

US Pride DVD Cover Criticised For Removing All Reference To Homosexuality

January 3, 2015 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

pride-better-slideThe film world has a bad reputation for trying to hide aspects of movies it decides will make them more difficult to sell (for example, just see how many trailers for foreign language films feature absolutely no dialogue). It’s certainly affected gay-themed films in the past, but you’d have thought a movie as out and proud as Pride would be immune to that.

However not in the US, where the DVD cover hasn’t just removed all reference to homosexuality in the the blurb, but altered one of the main images to take out a banner referring to the movie’s central group, ‘Lesbians & Gays Support The Miners’.

The text on the back meanwhile refers simply to ‘London-based activists’, rather than specifically mentioning the gay group that sets out to raise funds for striking coal miners which the film is all about.

It reads, ‘PRIDE is inspired by an extrodinary true story. It’s the summer of 1984 and much of blue-collar Great Britain is on strike. For one tiny Welsh village, the strike brings unexpected visitors – a group of London-based activists who decide to raise money to support strikers’ families and want to make their donations in person. In this heartwarming comedy, two groups seemingly from world’s apart, discover that standing together makes for the strongest union of all.’

While Pride has been a critical success in the US, it made little impact at the box office, grossing just $1.5 million. As a result it would appear the distributors are attempting to try and widen the audience on DVD by hiding what it’s actually about, presumably on the assumption more people will watch it if lesbians and gays aren’t mentioned at all.

The logic often used in these circumstances is that while many general viewers don’t mind watching a film about LGBT people, they’re less likely to do so if they think of it primarily as a ‘gay film’. However to use that idea with a movie like Pride, in which the importance of gay visibility is one of the major themes, seems particularly foolish.

It’s a particular shame coming shortly after the movie scored a surprise ‘Best Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy’ Golden Globe Nomination, suggesting that if it had been sold and marketed better in America, it might not just have been more of a commercial success, but could also have had a major awards run.

Take a look below to see the US DVD back cover, and then compare the image at the top of that with the original above. (Source: Pinknews)

Man Played By Channing Tatum In Foxcatcher Turns On The Film Due To Perceived Gay Subtext

January 2, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Foxcatcher-poster-slideFrom its premiere at Cannes, Mark Schultz, has been a vocal supporter of the film Foxcatcher, in which he’s played by Channing Tatum. However over Christmas he massively changed his tune, going on a (since deleted) Twitter rant against both the movie and its director Benett Miller, saying things such as, ‘YOU CROSSED THE LINE MILLER. WE’RE DONE. YOU’RE CAREER IS OVER. YOU THINK I CAN’T DO IT. WATCH ME… YOU THINK I’M GOING TO SIT BACK AND WATCH YOU DESTROY MY NAME AND REPUTATION I SWEAT BLOOD FOR. YOU AINT’ SEEN NOTHING YET DUDE… I CAN TOLERATE A LOT OF THINGS BUT I DON’T TOLERATE DISRESPECT. WE’RE DONE BENNETT… Everything I’ve ever said positive about the movie I take back. I hate it. i hate it. i hate it. I hate it. i hate it. i hate it. I hate it.’

The film is based on the true tale of Olympic wrestler Dave Schultz (Mark Ruffalo), who was murdered by his paranoid schizophrenic friend Jon duPont (Carell) in 1996. Du Pont was an heir to the Du Pont chemical company, who teamed up with Dave’s brother Mark (Channing Tatum) to help build up a wrestling training facility known as ‘Team Foxcatcher’ on his sprawling Pennsylvania estate.

So what mainly made Dave change his mind about the movie? Well, it seems it was a scene which some have interpreted as adding a sexual undertone to his relationship with duPont. During his rant, Schultz expanded on his issues in a Facebook post (also since deleted), saying “Leaving the audience with a feeling that somehow there could have been a sexual relationship between duPont and I is a sickening and insulting lie. I told Bennett Miller to cut that scene out and he said it was to give the audience the feeling that duPont was encroaching on your privacy and personal space. I wasn’t explicit so I didn’t have a problem with it. Then after reading 3 or 4 reviews interpreting it sexually, and jeopardizing my legacy, they need to have a press conference to clear the air, or I will.”

So it appears his problem is not that the film says he had a sexual relationship with another man, but that certain people have interpreted a sexual subtext and the possibility anyone could think that about him is more than he can take. It’s difficult not to feel there’s a whiff of homophobia about the way he’s lashed out, as it certainly goes further than just wanting to set the record straight.

Since his fury a few days ago, he’s removed his initial rant from both Twitter and Facebook, replacing it with a slightly more measured Facebook post, which says, “My story and my life are real. I am a real human being. While I may have tweeted out of anger, I in no way regret standing up for myself, nor do I regret calling out the only other man [Miller] who has had decision making power concerning my image and legacy these past years. I apologize for the harshness of my language, but I am firm in where I stand. I will gladly go to any lengths to protect and safeguard the integrity and truth of my story, my life, my character and my legacy. If that’s not worth fighting over while I’m still alive, I don’t know what is.”

However it would appear that the main thing he feels is worth fighting for is ensuring that no person on the planet thinks he could have had sexual subtext with another man, even if the scene in question is fully open to interpretation.

There are also some wondering whether Schultz has manufactured this controversy to publicise his own book about the Foxcatcher story (which was released in November), as his anger has been interspersed with plugs for the tome, as well as saying things such as the December 20th Tweet, “love Twitter and Facebook. I can have just as much publicity power as anyone. I may be small but I’m growing.”

He may also face a few issues from the studio behind, as he has admitted on Twitter that he is contractually obliged to support the film until the Oscars, and if he is, he seems to have blown that spectacularly.

This Is Drag Trailer – Bianca Del Rio, Adore Delano & more give an intimate look at life in drag

January 1, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

this-is-dragIn the last few years drag queens have never been as visible or more divisive. They are attacked by certain parts of the trans* community, as well as gay men who feel they belong to a past era when gay visibility was largely trapped in the camper end of the spectrum.

Nevertheless, there’s been a resurgence in interest in the artform, with many performers finding success and taking drag to new places that range from the arch and acerbic to full-on performance art. Indeed, despite the fact some don’t like them, drag artists have become one of the most interesting and challenging parts of the LGBT community, in a very post-modern way.

This Is Drag is a 60-minute Canadian documentary which takes ‘an intimate, behind-the-scenes look at performance, glamor, fame, family, love and sacrifice as some of the world’s most renowned drag queens come together for World Pride in Toronto. Starring Bianca Del Rio, Adore Delano, Courtney Act, Darienne Lake, Alyssa Edwards, Shangela.’

The trailer for the doc has been released and you can take a look at it below. [Read more…]
