The Man From U.N.C.L.E. (Cinema Review)

August 11, 2015 By Mike Martin Leave a Comment

Starring: Henry Cavill, Armie Hammer, Alicia Vikander, Elizabeth Debicki, Hugh Grant
Director: Guy Ritchie
Running Time: 117 mins
Certificate: 12A
Release Date: August 14th 2015 (UK)

Turning one of the most beloved 1960s spy TV series into a movie was always going to be a gamble, but in the blokey hands of Guy Ritchie all is safe. It’s everything you’d hope for – stylish, great clothes, cool soundtrack, a decent enough plot about saving the world from a sociopath, and full of period detail.

Where it falls down is in the crucial chemistry between the leads – Armie Hammer does well as the grumpy, disapproving Soviet agent Kuryakin, but Henry Cavill as Napoleon Solo is so wooden you wonder why someone doesn’t mistake him for a park bench and sit on him. There is no chemistry at all between either of them and Alicia Vikander, whose ‘aren’t I pretty’ routine is becoming slightly wearing. [Read more…]

Henry Cavill, Armie Hammer & More Get Man From U.N.C.L.E Character Posters

July 1, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

UNCLE_Henry_2764x4096_INTL_master-slideThe Man From U.N.C.L.E. is still one of the big unknowns of the summer, but it’s only a few weeks until we’ll discover whether audiences are interested in Guy Ritchie’s big screen take on the classic 60s TV series.

A set of character posters have arrived, which you can see above and below.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Henry Cavill (“Man of Steel”) stars as Napoleon Solo opposite Armie Hammer (“The Social Network”) as Illya Kuryakin in director Guy Ritchie’s “The Man from U.N.C.L.E.,” a fresh take on the hugely popular 1960s television series.

‘Set against the backdrop of the early 1960s, at the height of the Cold War, “The Man from U.N.C.L.E.” centers on CIA agent Solo and KGB agent Kuryakin. Forced to put aside longstanding hostilities, the two team up on a joint mission to stop a mysterious international criminal organization, which is bent on destabilizing the fragile balance of power through the proliferation of nuclear weapons and technology. The duo’s only lead is the daughter of a vanished German scientist, who is the key to infiltrating the criminal organization, and they must race against time to find him and prevent a worldwide catastrophe.

‘“The Man from U.N.C.L.E” also stars Alicia Vikander (“Anna Karenina”), Elizabeth Debicki (“The Great Gatsby”), with Jared Harris (“Sherlock Holmes: Game of Shadows”), and Hugh Grant as Waverly.’

The film’s in cinemas August 14th. [Read more…]

Now the main trailer has arrived, along with a poster.

The Man From U.N.C.L.E. Trailer – Henry Cavill & Armie Hammer are classic spy cool

February 12, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

man-from-uncle-vespa-slide2There’s no doubt that Henry Cavill and Armie Hammer are great-looking guys, but both are still in the making as movie stars with real staying power. Cavill has Superman but he’s yet to have any other major hits, while Hammer has appeared in the likes of Lone Ranger and Mirror Mirror but his a-list star status hasn’t quite stuck.

However they’ve both got a great chance of success this summer with The Man From U.N.C.L.E.. Now the trailer for Guy Ritchie’s movie has arrived and it’s got plenty of style and looks like it could be pretty fun.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Henry Cavill (“Man of Steel”) stars as Napoleon Solo opposite Armie Hammer (“The Social Network”) as Illya Kuryakin in director Guy Ritchie’s action adventure “The Man from U.N.C.L.E.,” a fresh take on the hugely popular 1960s television series.

Henry Cavill & Armie Hammer Get Very Close In A New Man From U.N.C.L.E. Pic

January 7, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

man-from-uncle-vespa-slide2Ah, the joys of cropping. You cut down an image like the one above and suddenly it looks like Henry Cavill & Armie Hammer have been caught getting a bit too up close and personal in the street, but when you take a look at the full pic below, you can understand exactly why Hammer is positioned that way behind the Man Of Steel.

The image is a new one from the upcoming Man From U.N.C.L.E. movie, which is due in cinemas this August.

We’re hoping that the homoerotic undertones between the guys don’t just end with cuddling up on a vespa, but we’ll have to wait and see.

Henry Cavill & Armie Hammer Are Looking Stylish In The First Man From U.N.C.L.E. Pic

December 22, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

man-from-uncle-preview-pic1The Man From U.N.C.L.E. is one of those movies that loked like it would never happen. A film version of the 60s TV show has been talked about for years, with the likes of Tom Cruise, Channing Tatum, Joel Edgerton, Bradley Cooper, and George Clooney all circling to star, and Matthew Vaughn, David Dobkin, and Steven Soderbergh slated to direct. But for various reasons they all moved on.

However then Guy Ritchie signed up to helm, with Henry Cavill as CIA agent Napoleon Solo and Armie Hammer as KGB agent Illya Kuryakin.

The movie went in front of the cameras a while ago but it’s only now we’re getting the first image, which shows, Cavill, Hammer and Alicia Vikander looking rather stylish.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘

Jared Harris Joins Henry Cavill & Armie Hammer In Man From U.N.C.L.E.

September 3, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

jared-harrisAfter decades in the making, The Man From U.N.C.L.E. is finally making the jump from TV to the big screen, with Guy Ritchie directing and Armie Hammer and Henry Cavill in the lead roles. With just a week to go until it starts shooting they’ve got some new company, as THR reports that Jared Harris has signed on for the movie.

Cavill and Hammer are set to play Napoleon Solo and Illya Kullyakin, agents of United Network Command for Law Enforcement (U.N.C.L.E.) who protect the Earth from the evil organization Technological Hierarchy for the Removal of Undesireables and the Subjugation of Humanity (T.H.R.U.S.H.).

Hugh Grant is also onboard as the head of British Naval Intelligence, with Alicia Vikander as a British agent who has an affinity for cars. There’s no info on what Harris will be doing in the movie. Don’t be surprised if he’s being villainous though, as that’s what he’s normally cast as (not least in Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes: A Game Of Shadows.

Hugh Grant Joins Henry Cavill & Armie Hammer In The Man from U.N.C.L.E.

August 9, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Hugh-GrantIt took over a decade to get the adaptation of The Man From U.N.C.L.E. from idea to shoot, but since Warner Bros. gave it the greenlight a couple of months ago it’s been moving fast towards an early September filming start date.

Henry Cavill and Armie Hammer are already set for the lead roles, and now they’ve been joined by Hugh Grant, according to Deadline, who’s signed on for a supporting role in the Guy Ritchie flick.

Hugh Grant will be the head of British Naval Intelligence.

Alicia Vikander is also on-board to play the female lead, a British agent who has an affinity for cars. The film is, of course, based on The Man from U.N.C.L.E. TV series which ran from 1964 to 1968.

Elizabeth Debicki Joins Henry Cavill & Armie Hammer In The Man From U.N.C.L.E

August 1, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Elizabeth-DebickiAfter impressing as Jordan Baker in The Great Gatsby, Elizabeth Debicki has booked another high profile role, joining Armie Hammer and Henry Cavill in The Man From U.N.C.L.E, according to Variety.

The film is based on the 1960s The Man from U.N.C.L.E., which followed two agents from United Network Command for Law Enforcement (U.N.C.L.E.), who try to stop the evil-doers from Technological Hierarchy for the Removal of Undesirables and the Subjugation of Humanity (T.H.R.U.S.H.).

Cavill will be Napoleon Solo (played by Robert Vaughn in the TV series), with Armie Hammer as Illya Kuryakin (David McCallum). Alicia Vikander is also set to star, with Guy Ritchie directing. There’s no news on exactly who Debicki will play, but she’ll be some sort of femme fatale role.

A film version of the series has been mooted for decades, with just this latest attempt taking over 10 years to get from conception to the point where it’s ready to go in front of the cameras (it’ll shoot in September), with various writer and directors coming and going in that time. Everyone from Steven Soderbergh to George Clooney has been involved, but it’s only now that it’s actually happening.

Henry Cavill In Talks To Replace Tom Cruise In The Man From U.N.C.L.E.

May 29, 2013 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

Henry-Cavill-mariano-vivanco-1Over the weekend it was revealed that Tom Cruise had decided not to star in the film version of The Man From U.N.C.L.E. With the film having been in development for years, that might have meant another long delay, but Warner Bros is moving fast to fill the hole, with Variety reporting that Henry Cavill is now in talks to take over for Cruise, although a deal is not yet set.

If he signs on, Cavill will be Napoleon Solo (played by Robert Vaughn in the TV series), with Armie Hammer as Illya Kuryakin (David McCallum). Alicia Vikander is also set to star, with Guy Ritchie directing.

The hope is to get all the casting and other issues sorted as soon as possible, so that film can kick off later this summer.
