Land of Storms Trailer – Sexual awakenings and a gay love triangle in Hungary

From the first few seconds of this trailer, you’d think everyone in Land Of Storms spends their time hitting and slapping one another. However the rest of the promo reveals a less violent and potentially more interesting LGBT-themed movie.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Land of Storms is about the sexual awakening of Szabolcs, a young man who plays on a German soccer team, as does his roommate, Bernard. After an ugly argument, Szabolcs returns to Hungary where he meets Áron and a mutual attraction between the two boys develops. But when Bernard also shows up, a turbulent love triangle develops.’

Michael Fassbender Says He Finds Opposition To Gay Marriage ‘Bizarre’

Many actors have stepped forward to support equal marriage, and now Michael Fassbender has confirmed his support for allowing gay people to get wed. Talking to GayStarNews during an awards chat, he said of gay marriage, ‘I totally favor it… People are happy and want to get married, why not? I don’t understand where the resistance would be to be honest. It seems bizarre to me – ludicrous.’

He adds that the battle over same sex marriage, ‘I’ve always thought it was a bit crazy that it wasn’t allowed. It’s so weird, bizarre.’

The actor was also asked about whether he would be happy to play a gay character, to which he commented, ‘If the right story comes, if it’s a good story, I always do it. It doesn’t really matter if the character is gay.’

Behind The Candelabra & Jared Leto Crown A Good Year For LGBTs At The Golden Globes

The Golden Globe winners have been announced, with the two top prizes going to 12 Years A Slave for Best Motion Picture (Drama) and American Hustle for Best Motion Picture (Musical Or Comedy).

It’s tough to tell which is the best indicator towards the Best Picture, as while normally it’s the Drama Globe that’s more likely to go onto Academy Awards success, that was actually the only award 12 Years won, while American Hustle also picked up two film actress gongs for Amy Adams and Jennifer Lawrence.

The other good indicator, the Best Director award, went to Gravity, suggesting it’s still a pretty open field for the Oscars.

It was a good year on the LGBT front, as Dallas Buyers Club picked up Best Actor (Drama) for Matthew McConaughey (whose character is straight but fighting for better access to HIV meds for all those affected) and Best Supporting Actor for Jared Leto’s performance as a transgender character. Leo DiCaprio picked up the other Best Actor Award (Musical Or Comedy) for Wolf Of Wall Street.

On the TV front the gay-themed Behind The Candelabra also did well, picking up a couple of gongs, including Best Mini-Series Or Motion Picture Made For Television, and Best Actor for Michael Douglas.

There were a couple of disappointments, such as Taylor Schilling losing out for the Netflix series Orange Is the New Black and Jim Parsons missing out for Big Bang Theory, but overall it was a pretty good year for films & TV that include LGBT content at the Golden Globes.

Find Out More About The Characters Of The Gay-Themed Series Looking In A New Video

There’s a lot of interest in HBO’s new gay-themed series Looking, which starts in the US on January 19th (and hopefully on Jan 27th in the UK). However while we’ve known it’s about a group of gay friends in San Francisco, who are these people and why should we care about getting to know them?

Now a new vid is hoping to answer that question, with main actors Jonathan Groff, Murray Bartlett and Frankie J. Alvarez, as well as creator Michael Lannan and writer/director Andrew Haigh (who’s best know the gay hit Weekend), talking about the show and the characters.

They certainly do a good job of suggesting this is more than just being a ‘gay show’, with potentially interesting characters going through experiences many of us can relate to. Take a look above. [Read more…]

Seek Trailer – Fresh look at Eric Henry’s LGBT-themed club-fuelled flick

A few months ago we featured the teaser for Eric Henry’s gay-themed Seek. Now the movie is gearing up for its world premiere at the Reelout Queer Film and Video Festival on January 30th in Kingston Ontario, Canada, and ahead of that a new trailer has been released, giving us a fresh look at the movie.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘The film centers on Evan, a shy, budding young writer who attempts to shake off the torment of lost love while taking an assignment profiling an alluring club promoter who reigns over a world of music, lights, and drag queens. Around him are a group of twenty-something urbanites who all long for the same thing: approval. Whether it’s by someone they find attractive, or by the cities’ in crowd, or by the industry they work in, all strive for the proverbial higher branch, sometimes failing to recognize the fruit that lies within their reach.’

Emma Thompson Talks About Why Saving Mr. Banks Glosses Over Her Character’s Sexuality

Saving-Mr-Banks-preview-pic1A few people have noted that while Saving Mr. Banks is all about Walt Disney and Mary Poppins author PL Travers, the movie doesn’t really talk about the latter’s possible bisexuality, or her close and possibly intimate relationship with friend Madge Burnand.

Although some have accused the movie of airbrushing history, Emma Thompson, who play Travers, has a different take on it. Talking the gay mag The Advocate, she says, “She [Travers] was what I would call a real searcher. I don’t know whether they were lovers or not, but she did live with Madge for a long, long time, and she certainly had very complex, passionate relationships with both women and men. She was an explorer of her own condition, and very possibly her own sexuality…

‘You can’t fit everything about a person’s life into two hours… Saving Mr. Banks’ is about a woman’s creative, artistic life. It’s a relief, quite frankly, because when is a movie about a woman not about her love life?”

As for why she’s never played a lesbian in a film herself – despite always being very supportive of LGBT people – Thompson says, “Nobody’s come up with a really interesting one for me yet, but I’m sure they will.”

She also adds that she feels a connection to the LGBT community, “I always have, perhaps because I’ve always felt like an outsider”. As for der gay following, “It’s a source of great pride and happiness. That support is very supportive, and my support in return is so profound and real.”

Thompson also mentions that in another life she could have been one half of the ultimate lesbian Hollywood power couple, saying, “Well, I met Sandy Bullock at an awards thing a couple years ago, and she said to me, ‘If I were gay, you’d be the one.’ I said, ‘I’m there!'”

Russell Tovey Says He’s Talked With Tom Daley About Coming Out

Russell-ToveyRussell Tovey has a lot of British fans thanks to the likes of Being Human and Him & Her, and he’s about to go up in the estimation of gay guys in US thanks to playing a major role in HBO’s new series Looking, about a group of gay guys in San Francisco (it starts in the US on January 19th).

Like many of the other cast members, Tovey is gay in real life too, something he’s always been open about. And while talking to the Evening Standard, he’s revealed that he admires the way Tom Daley came out so much, he’s had a chat with him about it.

He says of Tom, That was what was so brilliant about what he did — the video was very casual, not even beautifully lit, just him lying on his bed going, ‘Oh fuck it, now’s the time. Yes, guys, here it is. Done. Gone. Sending it out there; see what happens’ … I messaged him and said, ‘I’m proud of you, it’s brilliant what you’ve done, mate’. He just said, ‘Thanks’. He’s really sweet. I feel slightly protective of him but I don’t want to patronise anyone. I can say, ‘If you ever need help’…  and put it out there, but he’s [in a world] beyond me. If there was a younger actor wondering whether to come out, I’d advise them, definitely.”

Aww, now we love him even more.

The BAFTA Nominations Are Revealed, With LGBT Films Doing Pretty Well

gravity-poster3The BAFTA nominations are out, with Gravity getting the most nods with 11 nominations. 12 Years a Slave and American Hustle are each nominated in ten categories, while Captain Phillips has nine nominations. Behind the Candelabra and Saving Mr. Banks are each nominated five times.

Gravity will compete in the Best Film, Outstanding British Film, Director for Alfonso Cuarón, Original Screenplay, Original Music, Cinematography, Editing, Production Design, Sound, Special Visual Effects and Leading Actress.

The nominees for the EE Rising Star Award, which is always an interesting category to watch, were announced earlier this week. They include are Dane DeHaan, George MacKay, Lupita Nyong’o, Will Poulter and Léa Seydoux. This audience award is voted for by the British public and presented to an actor or actress who has demonstrated exceptional talent and promise.

On the LGBT front, Behind The Candelabra did well with five nominations in the Adapted Screenplay, Production Design, Costume Design and Make Up & Hair categories. Matt Damon is nominated for Supporting Actor. As it premiered on TV in the US, it’s not eligible for the Oscars, but its British cinema release allows it to compete at the BAFTA film awards.

The lesbian-themed Blue is the Warmest Colour, which won the Palm d’Or, is nominated for Film Not in the English Language. Philomena, which includes a gay subtheme, will compete for Best Film line-up, with three further nominations in Outstanding British Film, Adapted Screenplay and Leading Actress for Judi Dench.

The EE British Academy Film Awards take place on Sunday 16 February at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London.

New Coming Out Trailer – Charlie David produces a series about LGBT life in Montreal

Charlie David turned heads as an actor in the gay-themed likes of Dante’s Cove and A Four Letter Word, and has become a big of a queer cinema tour de force, writing Mulligans, directing the documentary I’m A Porn Star and producing Judas Kiss and Truth.

He’s also produced Coming Out, a mini-series which should be coming to DVD in the UK on February 10th from TLA Releasing.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘The explosive lives, loves and losses of an intermingled group of Montréalers are explored as they confront the subject of difference. Managing a modern relationship can be a mess. Single? Attached? Married? Divorced? Open? Closed? The most common answer is ‘It’s complicated.’ Get ready to come out with these characters as they negotiate acceptance, prejudice and just how much they’re willing to risk in the pursuit of love and happiness. Mat (Mathieu Blanchard) is a gay fashion photographer with nothing out of his reach until his ex, Ian (Marc-André Poliquin) resurfaces. Meanwhile, Hugo (Patrick Martin) pursues a secret relationship with Olivier (Sébastien Beaulac), a married father who keeps the closet door firmly shut. Liza Minnelli Says She’ll Give Matthew McConaughey Her Oscar If He Doesn’t Win His Own This Year

liza-minnelliLiza Minnelli likes The Dallas Buyers Club so much that she has started her own mini campaign to get the HIV-themed movie some Oscars. Nomination ballots are due on Wednesday, but yesterday as a New York Luncheon with Oscar voters, Minnelli turned up to toast the movie and wasn’t lacking in her praise for Matthew McConaughey.

THR reports that she told attendees, “I have nothing to do with this film except that I am a fan of how it was done, of the insight and the way they played these characters. And the fact that you were watching something that wasn’t necessarily comfortable but you could not stop watching. It drew you in, whether you wanted it to or not, and that’s magic. That’s magic. I mean, the last one [that did that for me] was ‘On the Waterfront.’ [laughs] You, crazy Matthew, losing all of that weight [pats her stomach] — it’s one thing to lose all of that weight and to look like that — that’s harrowing enough — but then to run like you did, with a body like that? And Jared, I mean, everything that you did — all of the placements, every single second — I felt wonderful for you, proud of you and sorry for you all at the same time, which I think one only feels for your friends. And Jennifer [Garner] was great — she was just f—ing great! [laughs] I don’t know what else to say. I haven’t seen a movie like that in so long, and I’m so proud to be able to tell everybody. And honey [addressing McConaughey], if you don’t win the Academy Award, I’m giving you mine!”

Liza of course won the Best Actress Oscar for Cabaret in 1973.

Here’s the Dallas Buyers Club synopsis: ‘Based on the incredible true story of Texan rodeo cowboy Ron Woodroof and his battle with the medical establishment and pharmaceutical companies after being diagnosed as HIV-positive in 1986.
