Russell Tovey Reveals His ‘Completely Unexpected’ Engagement To His Hunky Boyfriend

February 21, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

If any of you out there were hoping that one day Rusell Tovey would be your husband, I’m afraid you’re out of luck. The Quantico and Looking star has revealed he’s now engaged to his boyfriend, Steve Brockman.

Tovey confirmed the news saying Brockman was the one to propose and it took hm by surprise. He adds, “Completely unexpected but very very happy and looking forward to having a proper party to celebrate when back in London.”

The History Boys and Being Human actor has been dating Brockman for some time, although he’s been rather discreet about the relationship while never hiding it. Brockman is a rugby player with the Kings Cross Steelers, and as many sites hve been keen to point out, he also has a bit of an x-rated past as ‘Ryan Stack’ over at Randy Blue.

As the engagement came out of the blue, there’s no news on when they might get married. But right now Tovey says that he’s, “Over the moon.”

Wentworth Miller & Russell Tovey Share A Superhero Kiss On Arrow-verse Crossover Event

November 29, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Over the weekend we posted the first images of Russell Tovey as the Arrow-verse’ first live-action, openly gay hero, The Ray. While many people were excited just to have Tovey show up for a major crossover event between The Arrow, Supergirl, The Flash and Legends Of Tomorrow, there was an extra treat in store.

One scene in ‘Crisis On Earth X’, saw Tovey and Wentworth Miller sharing a smooch! Miller has been part of the Arrow-verse for several years as villain turned reluctant hero Captain Cold (aka Leonard Snart). Tovey’s Ray though comes from an alternate universe in which the Nazis won the Second World War, and it turns out that in that world, a version of Snart, known there as Citizen Cold, is his lover.

The result is something it’s difficult to imagine ever happening even 10 years ago – two openly gay actors, playing superheroes on a major TV show, sharing a loving kiss! Take a look at a gif of the moment below.

The crossover event will air on Sky 1 in the UK next week. [Read more…]

First Look At Russell Tovey As Gay Superhero The Ray

November 26, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Back in September we reported that after voicing the character of gay superhero The Ray in a CW Seed animated series, Russell Tovey was set to bring the character into the live-action Arrow-verse in a crossover event. Now we’ve got out first look at Tovey in character as holocaust survivor Ray Terrill, in a story that mixes the likes of The Arrow and Supergirl with the Nazis.

The two-night event is titled Crisis On Earth X, in which ‘Barry and Iris’s wedding brings the gang together, but things go awry when villains from Earth-X attack the ceremony. All of the superheroes band together with help from their super friends like Citizen Cold (guest star Wentworth Miller), The Ray (guest star Russell Tovey, Quantico), Felicity Smoak, Iris West and Alex Danvers to take on their most formidable villains yet. Earth’s mightiest heroes – Green Arrow, Supergirl, The Flash and White Canary – lead their teams into battle to save the world.’

If you’re wondering what Earth-X is, it’s an alternate reality where the animated show Freedom Fighters: The Ray takes place. In it, Germany won World War II and Green Arrow, The Flash and Supergirl are evil.

The Ray himself is a reporter who discovered a group of government scientists working on a secret project to turn light into a weapon of mass destruction. Before he could report on his findings, the project head exposed Ray to a ‘genetic light bomb’. The bomb failed to kill him and instead gifted Ray with light-based powers. With these abilities, Ray realised he could go beyond reporting on injustice – he could take action to help stop it.

The pics of Tovey also confirm that he will be gay in the show, as in one he wears the pink triangle the Nazis forced gay people to don in the concentration camps. Take a look below.

Crisis On Earth X starts on the CW in the US on November 27th, and will air in the UK in early December. [Read more…]

Russell Tovey Set To Play Gay Superhero The Ray In Arrow-verse Crossover Event

September 24, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

A few years ago out actor Russell Tovey had never played a gay character on screen. That’s certainly changed, as he’s played a range of interesting LGBT characters in everything from Looking to Quantico. Now he’s set to play a gay superhero as part of an upcoming four-episode Arrow-verse crossover event, which will bring together the characters from the likes of Arrow, Supergirl and The Flash.

They’re also bringing in some of the characters from the animated DC shows that air on CW Seed, and that includes Tovey as The Ray. Russell is voicing the character in an upcoming animated show, and will then turn him live-action for the crossover event that will air in November.

The Ray is, Ray Terrill, a reporter who discovered a group of government scientists working on a secret project to turn light into a weapon of mass destruction. Before he could report on his findings, the project head exposed Ray to a “genetic light bomb.” The bomb failed to kill him and instead gifted Ray with light-based powers. With these abilities, Ray realised he could go beyond reporting on injustice – he could take action to help stop it.

You can take a look at the trailer for the animated show here.

First Look At Andrew Garfield, Russell Tovey & The Cast Of The National Theatre’s Angels In America

January 11, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

While the first part of Tony Kushner’s two-part, Angels in America: A Gay Fantasia on National Themes, Millennium Approaches, was first performed in San Francisco, it was the 1992 British National Theatre production which helped state the play’s claim to being something exceptional. It and it’s follow-up, Perestroika, went of to win  the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, the Tony Award for Best Play, and the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Play, amongst other gongs.

The 2003 HBO mini-series version also won five Golden Globe and 11 Emmys.

To mark the 25th Anniversary, the National Theatre will be putting on a new staging, with a great cast including, Rusell Tovey, Andrew Garfield, Nathan Lane, Stuart Angell, Susan Brown, Laura Caldow, Denise Gough, Claire Lambert, Amanda Lawrence, James McArdle, Becky Namgauds, Nathan Stewart-Jarrett, Stan West and Lewis Wilkins. Now the first cast pictures have been released, which you can take a look at below.

Set in America in the mid-1980s. In the midst of the AIDS crisis and a conservative Reagan administration, New Yorkers grapple with life and death, love and sex, heaven and hell. The production will be directed by Olivier and Tony award-winner Marianne Elliott (The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, War Horse, Husbands & Sons).

Andrew Garfield, playing Prior Walter, comments: “I feel tremendously grateful and healthily daunted at the prospect of being back in a rehearsal room at the NT to attempt to scale the mountain of Tony Kushner’s masterpiece Angels in America. Thanking God or some other divine force to have Marianne Elliot as our intrepid leader and this incredible company of actors to share the adventure with. What a gift to work on and offer up this play that feels so urgent at this very moment, for all of our souls.”

Nathan Lane, playing Roy Cohn, adds: “I am very honored to be making my NT debut with such a distinguished cast under the direction of the brilliant Marianne Elliott in Tony Kushner’s masterpiece. In light of recent political events here in the U.S. I can’t think of a better or more timely play to be doing.”

Russell Tovey, playing Joe Pitt, says: “The great work is about to begin. The excitement and pride I feel as I embark on rehearsals for this epic play and this majestic production is palpable. I am so incredibly excited to be back at the NT after nearly ten years away with this historic and vitally important piece of theatre at a time when it has never seemed more relevant. I cannot wait to explore the tormented world of Joe Pitt and those tortured souls around him.”

The show will Preview in the Lyttelton Theatre from Tuesday 11 April, with a full opening in early May. Public booking for Angels in America will open at 8.30am on Friday 20 January 2017.

If you can’t get a ticket, Angels in America will be broadcast by NT Live from the National Theatre to cinemas around the UK and internationally (dates and venues to be announced). [Read more…]

The Pass (Cinema Review)

December 9, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Arinze Kene, Lisa McGrillis, Nico Mirallegro, Russell Tovey
Director: Ben A. Williams
Running Time: 88 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: December 9th 2016 (UK)

The Pass is one of those movies that really shouldn’t work. While it was acclaimed on stage, you would initially think that would be the only place it would succeed. It’s setup doesn’t immediately seem to lend itself to being opened up for cinema, as it by necessity it retains a very stark three-act structure, only has four speaking roles, and just three locations. However, despite that, it’s a really good film.

The movie opens in a Romanian hotel room, where two young footballers, Jason (Russell Tovey – who also originated the role on stage) and Ade (Arinzé Kene) are preparing for what could be a career-making game the next day. While they chat, bond, and perhaps subconsciously compete for status – both just in their underwear – they also slowly flirt towards something more intimate. There may be a lot of ‘lad’s talk’ about banging chicks and hot women, but that increasingly covers their true feelings. [Read more…]

Looking: The Book (Book Review)

October 10, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Jonathan Groff, Russell Tovey, Frankie J. Alvarez, Murray Bartlett, Raul Castillo
Director: Various
Release Date: October 2016

TV’s Looking had a slightly rough ride, getting as many detractors as fans, partly because we’d finally got a gay-themed show that took its characters seriously, but by treating its characters as flawed people, it couldn’t represent everything to everyone. And when it didn’t match up to what people’s own conception of exactly what a gay-themed show should be (who often seemed to want plaster saint gays), it got bashed. That translated into the fact it never found a huge audience, so we got two seasons of the show and a movie to wrap things up, but that’s it.

However, it has got a big enough following that it’s inspired a hardback coffee-table book, limited to 1,000 first run copies. [Read more…]

The Pass Trailer – Russell Tovey and Arinze Kene turn closeted gay footballers

September 15, 2016 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

pass-slideAfter opening the prestigious BFI Flare Festival, The Pass will be presented as part of the BFI London Film Festival before being released in UK cinemas, December 2016. The film is a British drama from debut Director Ben A. Williams, starring Russell Tovey (Looking, Being Human, The History Boys) and Arinze Kene.

Adapted for the screen by John Donnelly from his hit play first presented at the Royal Court Theatre, The Pass is the story of three very different nights over 10 years in the life of a Premier League Footballer. Jason (Russell Tovey) is at the beginning of his career, and on the night before his first big international match he and long-time friend and team-mate Ade (Arinze Kene) share a hotel room, trying to beat the inevitable pre-match tensions with locker-room banter and teenage high-jinks. Out of nowhere Jason kisses Ade. The emotional repercussions of this pass, and the decisions that follow on and off the pitch, have a major impact on every aspect of the public and private lives of both men across the next decade, in a sporting world where image is everything.

The cast includes Hollyoaks heart-throb Nico Mirallegro and theatre and TV actress Lisa McGrillis. Tovey, McGrillis and Mirallegro all reprise the roles they originally performed on stage. The Pass will be released in the UK by Lionsgate Films. [Read more…]

Looking: The Movie Trailer – First look at the wrap-up for HBO’s gay-themed series

June 24, 2016 By Tim Isaac 3 Comments

looking-movie-trailer-slideIt’s a real shame with Looking, as the fact it didn’t become a real success has probably made it more difficult to get gay-themed series made in the US. Perhaps most tragically is that I have a feeling that in years to come it will be viewed a lot more favourably than it is now.

Thankfully though, while HBO decided to cancel it after two series, they have allowed it a final, one-off movie to wrap everything up. That should ensure we get to know what happens to the characters played by the likes of Jonathan Groff, Russell Tovey, Frankie J. Alvarez, Murray Bartlett and Raul Castillo.

HBO has now released the first trailer for the film, which will debut in the US on July 23rd. It should arrive in other countries shortly thereafter. Take a look at the trailer below. [Read more…]

Russell Tovey & Andrew Garfield Teaming For London Stage Production Of Angels In America

April 12, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

russell-toveyLast month it was revealed that Andrew Garfield and Olivier Award winner Denise Gough were set to star in a new London National Theatre production of Tony Kushner’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play, Angels In America. Now it’s been announced that they will be joined by Russell Tovey, according to Broadway.com.

Tovey will play Joe Pitt, a married, Mormon attorney, who is secretly gay and starts a relationship with a man called Louis. Gough is set to be his wife, whose life starts to fall apart as her husband realises who he is and begins to live a new wife. Garfield meanwhile will be Louis’ former boyfriend, who is diagnosed with AIDS and as the disease ravages his body, he begins to have fantastical visions.

The National Theatre staged the first international production of the play in 1992, with the new production due to be staged at the same venue 25 years later, starting May 2017. Further casting will be announced soon, with many expecting other well-known names to fill the other roles.
