Dominic Cooper The Latest Actor Linked To Freddie Mercury Role

October 3, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Dominic-CooperIs Dominic Cooper in line to play Freddie Mercury in the planned biopic of the Queen frontman? He’s the latest to be linked to the role, according to Latino Review, is Dominic Cooper.

Sacha Baron Cohen was attached to play Mercury, but dropped out in August citing disagreements with the surviving members of Queen over the tone of the film. Cohen wanted a gritty tell-all, while the band members wanted a softer, PG-rated tale.

A couple of weeks ago Daniel Radcliffe was linked to the role, but he quickly stepped forward to deny the rumour.

Now it’s Cooper’s turn and as with Radcliffe, it’s difficult to know if there’s substance to this, or is it’s a rumour based purely on the fact Dominic is British and has dark hair. He does look a little more like Mercury than Radcliffe at least. Plus he can sing!

Peter Morgan wrote the script, but there’s no director attached at this time.

New Biopic Of Gay Beatles Manager Brian Epstein Planned, With The Rights To Use The Band’s Songs

October 2, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

brian-episteinWhile a lot of band fund their retirements by leasing out their music to anyone who’ll pay cash to use it, The Beatles have been very careful with which films they’ve allowed to use their music.

While the odd song has popped up and there was the musical Across The Universe, generally it’s been tough to get McCartney, Starr, and the estates of Harrison and Lennon to allow use of the original tunes. And when it comes the film actually about the Beatles, they’ve completely refused – which has caused issues for movies such as Backbeat and Nowhere Boy.

However now a new biopic of the band’s manager, Brian Epstein, is planned, and it’ll be the first film that’s won the right to use the Beatles’ actual music, according to Deadline.

This is the latest of a series of attempts to make a movie about Epstein. In 2009 a movie with a screenplay by Tony Gittelson foundered in 2009, while in April 2012 there were reports that Tom Hanks was producing a film about Epstein with Benedict Cumberbatch attached to star, but we haven’t heard anything about that since.

This new film has a script Tony-winning producer Vivek J. Tiwary (Green Day’s American Idiot, Mel Brooks’ The Producers), based on his own forthcoming graphic novel with art by Andrew C. Robinson and cartoonist Kyle Baker. Tiwary will also produce alongside Oscar-winner Bruce Cohen (American Beauty, Milk).

Epstein signed the iconic band back in 1961. He initially had difficulty getting a label to take them, before he managed to launch them to international superstar status. While he’s best remembered for his relationship to the Liverpudlians, he also managed the likes of Cilla Black and Gerry & the Pacemakers.

Epstein was also a closeted homosexual, whose sexuality was completely concealed from the public, although it was an open secret amongst his friends and associates. It’s little surprise it was kept secret, as homosexuality was still illegal in the UK at the time. He’s also said to have had an ‘almost’ love affair with John Lennon, which was never consummated (at least that’s how Lennon put it). Epstein battled addictions with drugs and gambling, and tragically died of an accidental overdose of sleeping pills in 1967, just one month before homosexuality was decriminalised in England and Wales.

The current hope is to start shooting in 2014.

Sal Trailer – First Look At James Franco’s biopic of gay actor Sal Mineo

October 1, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

James Franco is back doing gay things. Actually, he did this gay thing quite a while ago, but Sal has taken a couple of years to get from principal photography to the point of release. However now the movie is coming, and the first trailer has arrived.

Franco’s film is a biopic of actor Sal Mineo, famed for his roles in the likes of Rebel Without A Cause, Giant and The Longest Day. While he did have some relationships with women, in the late 60s he became one of the first Hollywood actors to ever acknowledge he was gay. Tragically in 1976, while he was living in San Francisco playing a bisexual burglar in the stage comedy, P.S. Your Cat Is Dead, he was murdered in what is believed to be a robbery gone wrong (reports Mineo was trying to solicit his killer for sex are unfounded).

The film concentrates on his final day, when he wasn’t quite a famous as he once was, but has become comfortable with his sexuality and his abilities as an actor. Val Lauren plays Mineo, with Franco taking a supporting role as Milton Kaselas, the director of the play Sal was starring in before he died.

Sal will be available on iTunes and VOD in the US starting October 22nd, with a limited theatrical release from November 1st, beginning in Los Angeles.

Michelle Rodriguez Casually Confirms She’s Bisexual

October 1, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

michelle-rodriguezOver the past few years a lot of rumours have swirled around Michelle Rodriguez, with many convinced she was LGBT but hiding that fact. Indeed, some people got pretty angry about it. While it’s taken her a while, the Lost and Fast & Furious 6 actress has revealed that she is ‘B’, aka bisexual.

She tells EW about assumptions she’s a lesbian, “Eh, they’re not too far off,” she said. “I’ve gone both ways. I do as I please. I am too f–king curious to sit here and not try when I can. Men are intriguing. So are chicks.”

Rodriguez has previously been ambivalent about people’s interest in her sexuality, which she has often referred to as people’s obsession with what she does with her vagina. Many would say sexuality is a lot more than just what people do with their genitals, but that’s how Michelle has sometimes put it.

For example, she also told EW, “I don’t talk about what I do with my vagina, and they’re all intrigued. I’ve never walked the carpet with anyone, so they wonder: What does she do with her vagina? Plus, I play a butchy girl all the time, so they assume I’m a lesbo.”

Back in 2006, she was linked to her BloodRayne co-star, Kristianna Loken (who is out as a lesbian), and has also spoken about not wanting to be put in a box. However on a red carpet in 2011 she stated, “I’m not a lesbian….yeah. Michi likes sausage.”

It’s similar to Wentworth Miller, who denied, demurred, hinted and tried absolutely silence before finally coming out in August.

The Falls: Testament Of Love Trailer – First look at the gay mormon sequel

September 30, 2013 By Tim Isaac 7 Comments

Back in April we reported that director Jon Garcia was seeking funding for a follow-up to his great gay-themed flick, The Falls. Well, he got the cash and the movie will premiere on October 5th at the Portland Lesbian & Gay Film Festival, with a US DVD release set for November.

The first film followed young Mormon missionaries RJ and Chris, who fall for one another despite the fact they know they risk excommunication if their relationship is discovered.

The sequel, ‘picks up five years after the doomed romance between Mormon missionaries RJ and Chris. Though their lives have taken radically different paths, the death of a mutual friend unexpectedly reunites the two men at a time when both are attempting to establish their adult lives. As old feelings of love and regret are rekindled, RJ and Chris must once again confront their seemingly impossible love. Will their reunion prove that they’re fated to be together, or is it merely a temporary fantasy?’

The trailer makes it seem like it’ll be well worth a look, with one of the men having embraced his sexuality, while the other has put the church first and done his best to be straight, complete with wife and kid.

The Perfect Wedding Trailer – Things get gay and complicated surrounding some family nuptials

September 30, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

What would the movies do without weddings? With its inbuilt drama and emotion, as well as the fact the ceremony sets a timescale to get all the problems sorted out, it’s a very handy structure for screenwriters to hang a story around. And why should all things LGBT get left out?

While this movie isn’t about a same sex marriage, as the trailer for The Perfect Wedding shows, there’s plenty of gay relationship drama going on.

Here’s the synopsis: The Perfect Wedding is the story of Paul Fowler (Eric Aragon) and Gavin Greene (Jason T. Gaffney), two young gay men who meet and fall in love over the Christmas holidays.

Charismatic, handsome Paul is a recovering alcoholic, eighteen months sober, but still picking up the pieces of the destruction he’d wrought while drinking. He lives at home with his parents, Richard (James Rebhorn) and Meryl (Kristine Sutherland), and with their support and the help of his AA sponsor Zach (Sal Rendino), Paul is learning how to live one day at a time.

But Christmas is approaching, and Paul’s adopted sister Alana (Apolonia Davalos) is coming home for the holidays. This won’t be just a regular family celebration — she’s recently engaged and the weekend will be spent planning her June wedding. She’s bringing her best friends Roy (Roger K. Stewart) and Vicki (Annie Kerins) home with her, to help with the task.

Problem is, Roy is Paul’s ex-boyfriend, and their relationship was a casualty to Paul’s drinking. In fact, the two young men haven’t seen each other since their very messy breakup. Nervous about seeing his ex again, Roy talks his good friend Gavin into joining him for the weekend, and pretending to be his new boyfriend.

When Paul and Gavin meet, sparks of attraction fly — but Gavin thinks Roy’s still hung up on Paul. And of course, the last thing Paul wants to do is hurt his ex all over again.

Meanwhile, like all families, the Fowlers must deal with bad news as well as good, and we discover that patriarch Richard has been recently diagnosed with early on-set Alzheimer’s. He is essentially symptom-free, but Meryl is terrified of what the future holds and throws herself into planning a lavish wedding for their daughter, Alana. Even though Meryl knows it’s foolish, she wants to create a wedding so big and so beautiful that no one — not even Richard — will ever forget it.

When Paul realizes that his sister’s wedding plans are getting steamrolled by their mom, he gets involved and convinces Alana’s fiancé Kirk (Brendan Griffin) to re-propose to her, asking her to marry him that very day, in a small ceremony at sunset near the water, with only close friends and family attending, just as Alana has always imagined. And with Paul’s help, Richard also confronts Meryl and convinces her to join him in the present instead of living burdened with the uncertainties of the future.

The proposal, the intimate wedding, and Paul and Gavin’s ultimate connection are touching scenes in a warm and funny story about a very real, modern American family. [Read more…]

Undressing Israel Trailer – Michael Lucas (Yes, That One) Looks at gay life in Israel

September 30, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Michael Lucas is well known for producing porn, and more recently he’s surprised some with his very strident support of Israel, as well as his vociferous attack on anyone who suggest the Middle-Eastern nation has ever done anything wrong.

He’s now made Undressing Israel, which sets out to overturn ideas about the Jewish state – such as that being LGBT is illegal there, or that everything gay has to be hidden in the shadows due to religious pressure – neither of which is true. Instead it appear to be some sort of gay utopia.

Well, at least that’s according to this trailer, which if representative of the movie, does seem to be a little one-sided. You can understand wanting to overturn stereotypes, but this seems a little extreme – but hey, I’ve never been to Israel, so perhaps it is an awesome place to be gay and there are no problems whatsoever! LGBT Actors Face Continued Offscreen Discrimination According To A New Report

September 30, 2013 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

badgett-herman-sag-aftra-report-sept-2013-1LGBT representation on US screens has improved massively in the last decade or so (with some room for improvement), and while that should be applauded, a new report says that offscreen discrimination is still a problem.

UCLA’s The Williams Institute and SAG-AFTRA (the actor’s union) has issued a report on the problem, using information from a survey of 5,700 members. It says that one-third of survey respondents believed that casting directors, directors, and producers may be biased against LGBT performers. When only LGBT actors were asked the same question, over half said there was bias.

On the positive side, only 16 percent of gay, bisexual and transgender respondents said they had experienced direct discrimination. Overall actors themselves were overwhelmingly supportive of LGBT issues and people, proving a positive, supportive environment, and many gay people would encourage others to come out.

“We were pleased to see that our membership is overwhelmingly supportive of LGBT actors, and that many LGBT actors found benefits in coming out,” said Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, SAG-AFTRA’s Cheif Administration Officer and General Counsel. “Nonetheless, coming out remains a significant and consequential decision for many performers and we are committed to supporting our members in living honest and authentic personal and professional lives.”

There’s a slightly more mixed picture for gay actors who have played gay characters in the last few years, with two-thirds feeling that it had not harmed their careers or limited the roles they were offered, meaning the one-third felt it did. Nine percent of the gay men and lesbians also said they had been turned down for roles during the past five years because of their sexual orientations.

This is one of the biggest remaining problems – whether LGBT actors are being pushed to one side by execs and casting directors, who in a toss up between two actors will go for the straight one just because it seems like an easier sell (but of course no one ever publicly says that’s why). It’s something that’s difficult to prove but anecdotally does seem to be an issue. This is born out in the survey, with respondents quoted as saying things like, “A director told me to recast a role after he found out the lead was a gay male”, and “I’ve seen many gay actors read for straight roles and when they left the room, the casting director indicated they would not be taken seriously in the straight role because they were gay.”

It’s certainly a mixed picture, but nearly all respondents said things were improving and almost nobody thought things would get worse in the future.

You can read the full results here.

Tilda Swinton Donates £1000 Towards Funeral For Russian Gay Rights Activist

Tilda Swinton holds a rainbow flag in Moscow’s Red Square

A few months ago Tilda Swinton made a stand for gay rights in Russia by standing in front of St. Basil’s Cathedral holding a rainbow flag. Now she’s made another worthy gesture, donating $1,000 towards the funeral of prominent Russian gay rights activist Alexey Davydov.

Davydov died last week at the age of just 36 following a prolonged illness. An online campaign was launched shortly afterwards to find the money to pay for a funeral.

Swinton’s donation was revealed by fellow activist Nikolai Alekseyev (one of the organisers of Moscow Pride), who Tweeted, ‘BRAVO and HUGE THANKS to British actress Tilda Swinton for the donation to cover the funerals of our friend and activist Alexey Davydov.’

He added: “Thanks to all who took part in this generous civil act… Alexey was a hero and now he will have a fitting funeral. I am pleased we were able to help in our small way but all the credit belongs to the generous donors and Alexey’s brave activist friends.”

Daniel Radcliffe Denies Freddie Mercury Biopic Rumours

September 25, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

daniel-radcliffe-out-magazine-cover-slide
A couple of days ago we reported on rumours that Daniel Radcliffe had been offered the role of Freddie Mercury in a biopic. Even at the time we were sceptical, partly because the news came from the not always trustworthy folks over at the Daily Star.

Now Radcliffe has stepped up to rubbish the rumour himself, telling Empire, “There is no truth to it at all. It’s one of those very, very funny things: it came out of a story in the Daily Star and then you see newspapers like The Guardian using The Star as their source, and it grows and grows [until] it’s ‘Dan Radcliffe is playing Freddie Mercury!’, which I was never going to do.”

He adds, “Everyone on the internet who I presume is saying I’m totally wrong for that part is correct. I AM completely wrong for that part!”

In fact Radcliffe knows nothing about the movie. “If I’d seen a rumour about me playing Iggy Pop, I’d think, ‘Hey, I’d have a go at that – that’d be fun!’, he says. “But Freddie Mercury? No. I don’t even know who the director is. They seem to be saying it’s Stephen Frears and Tom Hooper on the internet.”

This is the kind of thing that happens to me and it happens to Emma (Watson) with multiple 50 Shades Of Grey things. When somebody has column inches to fill, they just sub in one of our names.”

That means the Freddie Mercury role is still open after Sacha Baron-Cohen dropped out a couple of months ago.
