Zachary Quinto Wants To Adopt In Dog Eat Dog Short Film

January 31, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Zachary Quinto has adopted – a dog, that is. Now he wants us all to see his experience getting a doggy, in exaggerated short film form. The money for Dog Eat Dog was raised through Kickstarter, with a portion of the budget donated to the LA Shelter System.

Quinto says, “This story is very close to all of us, as we have all rescued or fostered dogs over the years. The story of the film is an exaggerated account of how I eventually found my rescue dog Noah, but it still reflects a bit of the reality I faced when I was looking to adopt a shelter dog.”

Take a look at the 13-minute short above, all about how one man can get very attached to a rescue dog before he’s even been allowed to take it home, and tries to beat out Philip Baker Hall to be the adoptive doggy daddy.

British/American LGBTQI Indie Bruno & Earlene Go To Vegas Wraps & The Teaser Is Here

January 30, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

We’ve been following the indie flick Bruno & Earlene Go To Vegas ever since it sought funding through IndieGoGo last year. Now the movie has just wrapped, the teaser trailer is here and we’ve got a couple of images too (which you can see below).

Scottish actors and performers Ross William Wild (The Voice, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Jesus Christ Superstar, the great gay short Downing) and Antony Cherrie (aka electro pop act Johnny Lazer) star in British director Simon Savory’s film. The US leg of the shoot wrapped in September 2012 on location in Death Valley Nevada and Los Angeles, with filming ending recently in Paris. The film is now in the editing suite, and will shortly be submitted to film festivals. Australian actor Miles Szanto (The Elephant Princess), Ashleigh Sumner (sci-fi TV series The Event) and Cassandra Peterson (Elvira Mistress Of The Dark) also star.

Ross, originally from Aberdeen, and Anthony, from Edinburgh, play a pair of ex-strippers who run away from their stripping troupe ‘The Hot Toddies’ to find fame in a rock band, only to wind up in a dusty hamlet deep in the Nevada desert.

Headstrong Earlene makes a discovery that she is totally unprepared for. Acting on impulses, she leaves everything behind and heads to LA. The perfect distraction comes along in the shape of the mysterious Bruno, a wandering intersex teenager she meets at Venice Beach. The two loners become fast friends, but when Earlene becomes embroiled in one of Bruno’s home rental scams, whilst simultaneously discovering just what lengths he will go to to score some cash, she takes the youth under her wing and drives off into the desert. Along the way they meet a sexually confused carjacker, a pair of Scottish ex-strippers, a tap-dancing drag queen and many more like-minded runaways – who are all looking for a way out in the world.

The film will tour international film festivals this summer.

Ben Affleck, Bradley Cooper & Emma Stone Cuddle Up In Bed For Vanity Fair

January 30, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

vanity-fair-hollywood-2013-coverIt’s time to Vanity Fair’s 19th Hollywood Portfolio, where they get the great and the good of Hollywood to turn up and pose. Being included has become an increasingly important status symbol in recent years, meaning that 75 stars have allowed famed gay photographer Bruce Weber to snap them for the magazine.

You can see the cute cover, featuring Ben Affleck, Bradley Cooper & Emma Stone above, and we’ve got a selection of the other images, which were featured on the Vanity Fair website, below. This year’s portfolio is subtitled, “Bruce Weber’s Adventures in Hollywood,” an ode to the city’s warmer side.

And from the evidence above and below, it’s gonna look good.

The Amazing Randi Biopic, An Honest Liar, Seeks Funding

January 29, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

honest-liar-randiJames ‘The Amazing’ Randi is a magician who in the last few decades has become one of the world’s most prominent sceptics of the paranormal, famously offering a million dollar reward to anyone who can prove paranormal abilities under laboratory conditions. Due to his outspoken debunking, he has been sued numerous times by the likes of Uri Geller, although he claims never to have had to pay a cent to anyone (although a lot of cash has gone on defending himself).

He’s also gay, a fact he didn’t reveal until three years ago when he was 81, after being inspired to come out by the film Milk. He was also facing the fact his partner of well over two decades, Jose, could possibly be deported, even though he escaped from his native Venezuela due to persecution for being a gay man.

Now Director/Producer Justin Weinstein is trying to put together a historical biography film project about Randi, called An Honest Liar, and has turned to Kickstarter to help. There’s already been a lot of backing, with $137,000 of the $148,000 total pledged. Weinstein is hoping to raise more that the $148,000 minimum though, as while the current total will allow more filming to go ahead, if they can raise extra cash that will help fund post-production.

Randi is certainly an interesting figure who’s well worth making a film about. For decades he was a well-known magician, even working with Alice Cooper to build stage tricks (and appear onstage) for one of his 1970s tour. He then began demonstrating supposedly paranormal tricks, such as spoon bending and saying they were just illusion, which turned him into a professional sceptic (leading some to claim he is psychic and lying about it!)

Behind all this and unknown to the public, he was living as a gay man – and of course when he was young gay sex was illegal. We’d certainly like to see a documentary about him, so head over to Kickstarter to help.

New Gay-Themed Web Series, The In-Betweens, Coming Soon

January 28, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Although TV is getting better at dealing with gay themes (although film sadly still lags behind the rest of society), some of the best LGBT projects are popping up online in the form of web series. Now a new one is incoming, The In-Betweens, about a straight woman and her gay best friend.

Following a successful Kickstarter fundraising drive last summer, the first season of the show is now on its way, starting in February.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘In an ode to the quarter-life crisis, and inspired by their real-life friendship, witness Clancy and Lyndsay’s comedic romp through New York City. There will be dates with blind men, impulsive pregnancies, and other shenanigans, but mostly Lyndsay will be dating weirdos while Clancy gives epic side-eye. It’s just like life, but funnier.  This a show about the moments that happen while you’re waiting for the next big thing. And from what it seems, those are the moments that matter most.  Life is what happens in The In-Betweens.’

From the teaser video above, it looks like it could be fun. Keep an eye on the official website to see the full episodes when they start appearing next month.

Infographic Breaks Down Gay Oscar-Bait Of The Past Decade

January 26, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

queer-oscar-infographicThe Oscars are only a few weeks away, which has given the guys over at FarsiteForecast an excuse to come up with the infographic above (click on it for a larger version), which takes a look at LGBT-related Oscar, SAG and Golden Globe wins and nominations from the past 10 years.

It comes up with some interesting facts, such as that while there have been several well known wins for straight people playing gay characters – Sean Penn in Milk, Philip Seymour Hoffman in Capote, Christopher Plummer in Beginners – no openly gay actor has ever won.

As the site notes, there are a couple of caveats to that, such as that, ‘Gay actor John Gielgud Won for Best Supporting Actor in 1981 for Arthur and he was nominated in 1964 as well. Despite a gay scandal in the British tabloids 1953, Gielgud’s sexual orientation was not well-known or publicized in Hollywood. Recent news-maker Jodie Foster has twice won and four times been nominated for an Oscar. But, until last week’s Golden Globes, Foster’s identification as a Lesbian was Hollywood’s worst kept secret. She, in fact, made this into a punch line in her speech.

‘Sir Ian Murray McKellen has long been out and proud. But, despite multiple Laurence Olivier Awards, a Tony Award, a Golden Globe Award, five Emmy Award nominations, and two Academy Award nominations, Sir Ian has never taken home the Oscar.’

In the past decade there have been 13 identifiable LGBT roles that have received Oscar nominations, and quite a few more who have picked up SAG and Golden Globe nods. Although the infographic is somewhat encouraging in that in eight of the last 10 years, there’s been at least one LGBT character included in the acting categories, it does suggest we’ve still got a long way to go.

After all, it’s not long ago that the likes of Ernest Borgnine refused to watch Brokeback Mountain when he was considering what movies to vote for in the Oscars. It’s also true that there are no gay-nominations in any of the main categories this year, although Tony Kushner is in the running for his Lincoln screenplay. Paranorman is also up for Best Animated Film, which is being lauded as the first mainstream animated movie to feature a gay character.

Chinese Release Of Cloud Atlas Removes Gay Sex Scenes

January 25, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

cloud-atlasOne of the most interesting developments in film in the last few years is the rise in the importance of China and the particular issues with releasing movies there. It’s fast becoming one of the biggest markets on the planet, but China’s laws mean only a handful of foreign movies can be released there each year. One way around that is to make your film a Chinese co-production, which is how Cloud Atlas is getting released in China (normally it’s only Hollywood’s biggest movie that are brought out in the country).

However Chinese audiences are getting a rather different version of the movie than the one audiences elsewhere have seen. Producers Grant Hill and Philip Lee told The Wrap, “We were unaware that our Chinese partners, Dreams of Dragon Pictures, had cut almost 30 minutes from the film. We did know that, as with other countries, there were likely to be censorship trims and we trusted them to protect the integrity of the filmmaker’s creativity and vision.”

Dreams of Dragon Pictures provided just over $10 million of the $100 million budget.

According to E!, the bits removed “included sex scenes featuring both gay and straight characters, as well as violent set pieces.” However it’s not immediately clear if other elements of the relationship between Robert Frobisher (Ben Whishaw) and Rufus Sixsmith (James D’arcy) have been altered.

Including homosexuality in movies is not unheard of in China, although it can cause issues with the censors and is seen as box office poison.

Co-director Lana Wachowski doesn’t seem that impressed, commenting at the premiere, “It sucks really, but I believe you can watch the full version online.” It was a jab at both the decision to severely cut the movie, as well as China’s rampant piracy problem.

Dave Franco Talks Gay – ‘If you Google my name, the first thing that comes up is ‘Dave Franco Gay”

January 22, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

dave-franco-f-yourselfFor a few years Dave Franco was only ever thought of as James’ little brother, but thanks to the likes of Fright Night and 21 Jump Street he’s really started coming into his own (and many have suggested he’s beginning to beat his older bro in the hotness stakes). Other people know him best for his Funny Or Die vids, which tend to have a very homoerotic air, such as ‘You’re So Hot’, which he did with Christopher Mintz-Plasse, and ‘Go F*ck Yourself’, which he takes very literally (you can watch both below).

Now the actor has given what’s being billed as his first gay interview, conducted by Chris Azzopardi for Pridesource, ahead of the release of his new movie, Warm Bodies. And like brother James, he really does embrace the gays, even if Dave is more about comedy while James is a bit more political.

When asked when he was first aware of his gay following, he says, “My friend I grew up with started calling me out and saying, “Dude, I can’t even imagine what people who don’t know you think of you.” It’s not like I’m doing these videos because I’m trying to shock or confuse people. I’m generally drawn toward material that’s just different and unique and is gonna maybe surprise people a bit. So I was first aware that there was maybe some awareness of me from the gay community when all my friends were telling me there’s all this stuff online and if you Google my name, the first thing that comes up is ‘Dave Franco Gay.’ (Laughs)”

So are his videos a way of showing support for the gay community? “Yeah, sure – definitely! I have gay friends and of course I’m comfortable enough with my sexuality that I’m open to doing videos like that,” he says. “I know a huge audience is going to think that I am gay. I’m just trying to blur the lines, I guess. I’m not consciously trying to do that, but it’s not something I think about. Like with my friends who are gay, it’s not like that’s the first thing I associate with them. They’re just another friend, and they just happen to like guys.”

But why are so many of his videos so gay? “There are a lot of very overtly gay things in these videos, but for some reason while I was making them, or while I was even initially thinking of the ideas, I swear to god I didn’t think, ‘OK, we’re gonna make another gay video that’s gonna shock people’,” he says. “The way ‘You’re So Hot’ came about: I worked with Chris on a movie called ‘Fright Night’ and in between takes we would play this game. It was a game that he and his buddies played growing up and it just made me laugh my ass off, so when the movie was done and we were back in L.A. I thought to myself, ‘This would make a really funny short.”’

He’s also asked about the fact both he and his brother embrace the gay world, and whether there’s any overlap in the way they do it. “That’s a good question,” he says. “The main overlap is just how hard we dive into it. There’s nothing subtle, I guess, about how we embrace gay culture – and there basically are no boundaries. We both push the envelope.

“I don’t know why a lot of what we create deals with that subject matter. I get asked that all the time, and I’m not consciously thinking to myself, ‘I’m gonna make these sexually explicit gay videos.’ It just comes through us for some reason.”

Daniel Radcliffe Explains That Not All English People Are Gay

January 22, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

kill-your-darlings-daniel-radcliffe-dane-dehaan
Daniel Radciffe is at the Sundance Film Festival for the premiere of Kill Your Darlings, in which he plays gay poet Allen Ginsberg. He’s been asked a lot about the gay sex scenes andwhether he found them difficult, to which he’s generally answered that it isn’t and should be any different to straight love scenes and people just need to get over it.

Out talked to him about the fact many people find his innate comfort around all sexualities to be empowering, to which he gave an interesting answer, including the fact that a lot of American think all Brits are gay.

He says, ‘I had an interesting conversation with someone recently, because there was a wonderful moment on the opening night of How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying when one of the male chorus of the show tried to set up my bisexual dresser, who’s a woman—and who had been with a woman for a long time at that point—with my gay English singing teacher, which was never going to work.

‘I said, “Did you not know Mark was gay?” And he said, “To be honest, all English people I meet seem gay, so I just assume none of you are.”

‘I was talking to someone about this and I said, “Why is it that when people meet English men in America they automatically think they’re gay?” and one of the girls explained to me it was because American men feel the need to in some way assert a sense of masculinity in everything they do, and British men don’t feel the same compulsion to do that all the time.

‘I think my attitude towards homosexuality is actually the prevalent one in my generation—it’s just unfortunate that in the world of the Internet sometimes the angriest voices are the ones we hear the loudest. But I can’t remember the last time I met somebody of my age who was bigoted. Obviously it exists, but I do think attitudes are changing.’

Alfred Molina & Michael Gambon Getting Married For Keep The Lights On Director Ira Sachs

January 20, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

michael-gambon-alfred-molina-ira-sachsFor many people, Ira Sachs’ Keep The Lights On was the gay movie of 2012, earning huge critical plaudits and several awards. Now the helmer is plotting his follow up and thanks to the success of Keep The Lights On, he’s getting some better known names to help him.

Deadline reports it’s emerged at Sundance that Michael Gambon and Alfred Molina are attached to play a married couple in Love Is Strange, which like Sachs’ earlier film, will look at the ups and downs of a gay relationship.

The film will see Gambon and Molina as a couple who’ve been together a long time and decide to get married in New York (where gay marriage is legal). However following their nuptials, they’re forced to live apart.

The plan is to shoot the movie this summer in NYC.

It’s fitting that news of the movie has been revealed at Sundance, as Keep The Lights On got its world premiere at the festival last year.
