Daniel Radcliffe Talks About His Gay Sex Scenes In Kill Your Darlings

January 19, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

kill-your-darlings-daniel-radcliffe-dane-dehaanDaniel Radcliffe is in Utah for the premiere of Kill Your Darlings at the Sundance Film Festival, in which he plays gay poet Allan Ginsberg. TheImproper was at last night’s screening and managed to catch what the former Harry Potter had to say about his gay sex scenes in the film, which includes ‘oral sex, making out and getting naked for sex, all with men.’

“It was something new,” Radcliffe said. “But you know what, we shot that whole scene in maybe an hour and a half so it was incredibly fast-paced. I didn’t really have time to stop to think and worry about it.”

He also thinks getting to know his scene-mate helped. “We were able to hang out a little bit on set and get to know each other a little bit, which I think is important when you’re doing a scene so intimate. “You have to feel like you’re both in it together.”

The movie charts how a murder helped shape the lives of a group of young men who went on to become the beat generation. Chronicle star DeHaan plays Lucien Carr, the man who introduced Howl writer Allen Ginsberg to the likes of William S. Burroughs (Ben Foster) and Jack Kerouac (Jack Huston). Indeed, Ginsberg later said that “Lou was the glue” that brought the beat poets and writers together.

During these early, hedonistic days, a man called David Kammerer (Michael C. Hall) fell for Carr, with his infatuation becoming increasingly obsessive and unhinged – Ginsberg once discovered Kammerer trying to murder Jack Kerouac’s cat. It eventually resulted in Carr stabbing Kammerer to death him and going to prison for his murder. The violent event is said to have indelibly changed all the people involved and etched its way into the published works of the Beat writers.

Although Carr said the killing took place after he rejected Kammerer’s sexual advances and was assaulted as a result, many have suggested that Lucien wasn’t as heterosexual as he made out, and that he and Ginsberg had been lovers. The full truth of what happened may never be known. Whatever happened, it was a pivotal moment for Ginsberg, who had been exceptionally close to Carr whether they’d been lovers or not.

The film is said to look at all this, with many giving it good notices from its Sundance premiere.

God Loves Uganda Trailer – How anti-gay views get exported from the west to Africa

January 18, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The recent documentary Call Me Kuchu was a terrifying look at what it’s like to be gay in Uganda – the country where the so-called ‘Kill the gays’ bill is currently being debated by parliament and could see the death penalty attached to the ill-defined offence of ‘aggravated homosexuality’.

Thile Call Me Kuchu looked at the people affects, the new documentary God Loves Uganda, which premieres today at Sundance, is more interested in why homosexuality has become such a hot button issue in Africa, with several countries saying they want to strengthen laws against what is already a criminal offence. Director Roger Ross Williams suggests, as several have before him, that much of the impetus comes from anti-gay American preachers, who head to Africa and whip up hatred there.

In a statement he says, ‘I thought about following the activists-brave and admirable men and women-who were fighting against these policies. But I was more curious about the people who, in effect, wanted to kill me. (According to the provisions of the Anti-Homosexuality Bill, I could be put to death or imprisoned.) Notably, almost every evangelical I met – American or Ugandan – was polite, agreeable, even charming. Yet I knew that if the bill passed, there would be blood on the streets of Kampala.

‘What explains that contradiction? What explains the murderous rage and ecstatic transcendence? In the well-known trope about Africa, a white man journeys into the heart of darkness and finds the mystery of Africa and its unknowable otherness. I, a black man, made that journey and found – America.’

Ryan Murphy & Jason Blum Plan The Town That Dreaded Sundown Remake

January 18, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Ryan-MurphyTwo of the busiest men in Hollywood have decided to team up for a new horror flick. Ryan Murphy currently has three show on TV – American Horror Story, The New Normal and Glee – and he’s also preparing to shoot AIDS drama The Normal Heart. Jason Blum is the prolific producer behind the likes of Paranormal Activity, Sinister and Lawless (he produced eight movies in 2012 alone).

Yet somehow they’re planning to find time to remake the obscure 1976 horror film The Town That Dreaded Sundown. Movieweb says that Murphy revealed the info during a Q&A session, where he told them Alfonso Gomez-Rejon, who directed the American Horror Story: Asylum finale, is in negotiations to direct.

Murphy said, “There’s no deal done, we’re just working on it. I’m friends with Jason Blum, who is one of the producers on The Normal Heart movie that I’m doing, and he is also the brilliant mastermind behind the Paranormal Activity series. Jason has a very great idea to do horror movies for a price, and I think that’s right. He said to me, ‘If there’s ever anything that you want to do, please come to me.’

“The movie that I was most freaked out by as a child was this movie that no one ever saw called The Town That Dreaded Sundown, which is based on the Texarkana things. I was just starting to babysit my brother, and the ads for that would come on and I would get freaked out. I went with him with this, and MGM was gracious enough to do it with him, so we’re doing a modern-day version, remake, weird, meta thing with that. He (Alfonso Gomez-Rejon) is in negotiations to direct that, so hopefully we’ll shoot that in the spring, before we go back and do American Horror Story.”

The original film, loosely based on a true story, follows a Texas Ranger (Ben Johnson) trying to hunt down a serial killer in Texarkana, Arkansas. It’s not clear if Murphy will write the remake, or if that job will go to somebody else.

GALECA (Gay & Lesbian Entertainment Critics Association) Announce Dorian Awards Winners

January 17, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

dorian-2013-winners
Who cares about the Oscars? The Dorian Awards are where it’s at, although I may be slightly biased as I’m a member of GALECA, the Gay & Lesbian Entertainment Critics Association, which hands out the gongs to the best in TV and film.

The winners of this year’s awards have now been announced, with Argo and Keep The Lights on taking the biggest prizes of Best Film and Best LGBT Film. Daniel Day-Lewis and Anne Hathaway also have reason to celebrate, as they’ve picked up some love from the gay critics, who’ve awarded them Best Actor and Best Actress for Lincoln and Les Miserables respectively.

GALECA’s members deemed Ezra Miller worthy of their We’re Wilde About You Rising Star, honouring him for his portrayal of a bullied gay teen in The Perks of Being a Wallflower.

In the more unusual film categories, the comic drama Bernie, starring Jack Black as a murderous – but supernice – funeral director, was named Unsung Film of the Year. Channing Tatum’s guy-strippers melodrama Magic Mike and the Zac Efron-starring potboiler The Paperboy tied for the group’s novel Campy Film of the Year title.

On the TV side, American Horror Story won TV Drama of the Year for the second straight year (this time it tied with the conspiracy thriller Homeland). The series’ star, Jessica Lange, won TV Performance of the Year a second time as well. Girls took TV Comedy of the Year, while Modern Family and freshman gay-life satire The New Normal tied for LGBT TV Show of the Year. Campy TV Show of the Year honours went to the Lindsay Lohan starring biopic Liz & Dick, while the Unsung TV Show award was given to the comedy Happy Endings.

In new categories, GALECA named Ryan Murphy, co-creator of American Horror Story, The New Normal and Glee, as Wilde Artist of the Year. Fox’s Life of Pi was the group’s pick for Visually Striking Film of the Year, while TV or Movie Title of the Year went to Don’t Trust the B—- in Apartment 23, which bested the likes of I Was Impaled and It’s Christmas, Carol! for that silly, er, title.

dorian galecaThe complete list of Dorian Award winners is below. A celebratory toast will be held Sunday, February 17the in Los Angeles. For more information, please visit: galeca.com and https://www.facebook.com/galecadorianawards

24th Annual GLAAD Media Awards Nominees Announced

January 16, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

glaad-media-awards-logoThe Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) has announced the nominees for its 2013 Media Awards. The organisation’s diverse range of gongs covers everything from film and TV to magazine articles and comic books, acknowledging the LGBT related work going on in various spheres.

On the fiction film front there are two awards, with one honouring the Outstanding Film (with at least some LGBT content) that got a wide release in the US, while the other gives the nod to smaller movies that only got a limited released. On the Wide Release list are The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, Cloud Atlas, ParaNorman, The Perks of Being a Wallflower, and Your Sister’s Sister, while the Limited Releases nominated include Any Day Now, Keep the Lights On, Mosquita y Mari, Musical Chairs and North Sea Texas. Interestingly, Paranorman is the first PG rated movie ever included in its category, suggesting gay character are reaching into more different types of films than ever before.

In the Outstanding Documentary category, the nominees include Chely Wright: Wish Me Away, about the gay country music singer, as well as the hard-hitting AIDS documentary, How To Survive A Plague. There’s also Vito, about activist and Celluloid Closet author Vito Montiel, Hit So Hard, about Hole drummer Patty Schemel and Codebreaker, which looks at the incredible life of gay cryptographer and father of computing, Alan Turing.

The list of nominees across all the categories is as much an acknowledgement of the range of LGBT issues dealt with well in the US (in the face of much hostility), such as talk show episodes looking at the lives of transgender people, theatre touching on gay issues and gay-related online journalism.

Jodie Foster Inspires Young People To Vaguely Come Out, Sort Of (Spoof)

January 16, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Jodie Foster’s rather meandering ‘coming out’ speech at the Golden Globes has certainly provoked a lot of reaction, from those who are pleased she’s said something that seems to be an unequivocal acknowledgement that she’s gay, to those peeved that it wasn’t more straightforward and also at the anger she seemed to have towards saying anything at all.

It’s also provoked a humorous response from The Onion, who say her speech has inspired youth across the US to kind of come out in vague, meandering ways. It’s quite fun, so take a look above.

Matt Riddlehoover’s Latest Film Gets A Title, West Hollywood Motel

January 16, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

whm-jaredallman-alecbellThe exceedingly busy actor/director Matt Riddlehoover (Scenes From A Gay Marriage) has recently been shooting a new movie, as we reported a few weeks ago. Now the previously untitled film from Bring Chase Productions has a name – West Hollywood Motel.

The romantic comedy, which was produced by Shane Bartlett and Ryan Basham, will follow several intersecting tales about people who have checked into the same motel room.

The ensemble cast includes Riddlehoover, his Scenes from a Gay Marriage co-star Jared Allman, and newcomer Alec Bell (pictured), as well as Andrew Callahan, Cesar D’ La Torre, Luis A. Gudino, Amy Kelly, Phil Leirness, Luis Lucas, Ben Phen, and Anna Sondall.

Currently in post-production, the film is slated for release later this year. In the meantime, you can keep up with West Hollywood Motel over at its official Facebook page.

As well as Scenes From A Gay Marriage, which was released on DVD in the US late last year, Riddlehoover has already shot Return To Babylon, while another as-yet-untitled movie is in development. So we can expect to hear a lot more from him.

Whoopi Goldberg To be Honoured By HRC For LGBT Activism

January 15, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Whoopi-GoldbergThe Human Rights Campaign, the US’s largest LGBT, civil rights organisation has announced that Whoopi Goldberg will receive the 2013 HRC Ally for Equality Award at the annual Greater New York Gala dinner on February 2, 2012 at the Waldorf Astoria.

The Ally for Equality award is given to allies outside the LGBT community who stand up on behalf of equality. An outspoken advocate for equality worldwide, Whoopi has never been afraid to stand up and support LGBT people, campaigns and causes. She has publicly called marriage equality a ‘no-brainer,’ and has made the case for equality in her role on ABC’s daytime show, The View.

She’s been speaking up on LGBT causes for a long time, as even back in 1987 she spoke at the March on Washington for gay rights, saying “Mr. Reagan, did you explain…that sometimes ignorant people act in such a way [toward people with AIDS] that it is frightening.… How long is it going to take before people get smart…educated people? We’re not talking about illiterate people. We’re talking about senators and congressmen and the fucking president.”

HRC President Chad Griffin commented, “We are proud to honor Whoopi Goldberg with the Ally for Equality Award for her commitment to the LGBT community through her public support of marriage equality, including taking part in our successful New Yorkers for Marriage Equality video campaign in 2011. Whoopi is always willing to stand up for our community and is a longtime friend of HRC.”

Former NYC Mayor Ed Koch ‘Shocked’ By Claim In New Documentary That He’s Gay

January 15, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

ed-kochThe 88-year-old former mayor of New York City, Ed Koch, has said he’s ‘shocked’ at a claim in a new documentary, Neil Barsky’s Koch, that he is gay.

Gay rights activist Ethan Geto makes the claim while talking about the fact Koch was mayor during the early days of the AIDS crisis in the 1980s (he served between 1978 and 1989). Geto says, “So many people, particularly in the gay community, thought Koch was gay and that because he was a closeted gay man he wouldn’t do anything on AIDS. It would have been so incredibly invaluable for a popular mayor of New York to declare he was gay.”

The New York Post reached out to Koch for comment about the comments, who responded “I was shocked, frankly. Why would he do that?” He claimed to be particularly surprised as he’d previously thought of Geto as a friend.

It’s not the first time questions about Koch’s sexuality have been raised, as even back during his run for office in 1977, anonymous posters appeared bearing the slogan, “Vote for Cuomo, Not the Homo.”

Normal Heart playwright Larry Kramer has also previously taken Koch to task for his stance during the AIDS crisis and said he was gay, writing in NYMag, “I think Ed Koch is the person most responsible for allowing AIDS to get out of control. It happened here first, on his watch. If he had done what any moral human being should have done in the beginning, and put out alarms, then a lot fewer people would have gotten sick. I was introduced to Koch at a party in 1982, specifically to talk about what was happening. And the minute he knew what I wanted to talk about, I was pulled away by police. He was a closeted gay man, and he did not want in any way to be associated with this.”

Koch has always refused to be drawn on his sexuality, using the rather nebulous excuse that it would ‘legitimise the question’.

Titanic & Alias Star Victor Garber Confirms That He’s Gay

January 15, 2013 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

victor-garberAs with Jodie Foster’s speech at the Golden Globes on Sunday, we’ve got another, yes-we-kind-of-knew-that-already coming out today – this time Victor Garber. A veteran of Broadway, Canadian born Garber has become an increasingly familiar face on TV and film over the years in the likes of Titanic, Tuck Everlasting and Legally Blonde, while Alias fans will recognise him as Jennifer Garner’s spy father. He’s recently been seen in Argo and is heading back to TV for the series Deception.

It was while promoting that show that he was interviewed by Greg in Hollywood blogger Greg Hernandez, who approached him about some info on Wikipedia, which said Garber’s partner is a man called Rainer Andreesen. When Anderson asked, “I wondered if that’s something public, that you’ve confirmed.”

Greg wrote, “He seemed surprised by the question but said: ‘I don’t really talk about it but everybody knows.’ Garber then added: ‘He’s going to be out here with me for the SAG Awards.’”

It’s not the first time the info has come out (hence why it’s on Wikipedia) as it has been mentioned in some previous articles, but it is the first time Garber has specifically addressed it.

Hopefully Andreesen will be able to see his partner pick up an gong when he attends the SAG Award, as Victor in nominated for Best Ensemble as part of the Argo cast.
