Men To Kiss International Trailer – Causing trouble in a gay relationship

October 20, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Robert Hasfogel’s German movie Men To Kiss has had great success on the film festival circuit, including winning two awards at the Bangalore Queer Filmfestival. It recently got a release in its own country, sadly we don’t know when it might reach the UK. However from the evidence of this trailer, it’ll be worth a look when it does.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘The gay couple Earnest and Tobias are being visited by Ernest’s old friend Uta. What at first looks like an innocent house-call, turns into an insidious attack on the couple’s relationship…’

Did Matt Bomer Lose Out On Superman Role Because He Was Gay?

October 20, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

This is one of those stories you need to believe or disbelieve as much as you want, as it’s not exactly from the horse’s mouth, but novelist Jackie Collins has claimed in a recent interview that White Collar star Matt Bomer lost out on the role of Superman in the upcoming Man Of Steel because here’s gay. We’re not sure how she’d be personally privy to that info, but sadly with the way Hollywood works, it’s certainly more than possible she’s right.

Talking to GaydarRadio she said, ‘Matt Bomer, who is the most gorgeous looking guy and the star of White Collar, he was up for the role of Superman. ‘He had not come out of the closet but people in the know knew he was gay. His audition tape went in and he called up the agent. Someone didn’t like him and told them he was gay. They said, “No, no, we can’t cast you.” The reason he didn’t get cast was because he was gay.

‘I think it should change but there are women out there who want to worship somebody. If Justin Bieber said he was gay, he’d lose all his little girl fans. It’s a sad fact of life. So a lot of them get married, have a couple of kids and pretend to be straight.’

As mentioned, we can’t speak to the validity of this, but we would bet Bomer would have made a great Clark Kent. Hopefully Henry Cavill will do as good a job.

It Gets Better Trailer – Gender and identity in modern Thailand

October 18, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

While the words ‘It Gets Better’ immediately bring to mind the campaign to try ensure bullied teens know that while things may be tough, there’s a silver lining, it’s also the name of a Thai film, looking at gender, sexuality and love in the country. The film traces three lives as they deal with social norms of gender, family and love in Thailand. Complete with an Alfa Romeo convertible and Jackie O sunglasses, a cosmopolitan woman finds herself in a rural village struggling with facing her small town roots, the person she has become, and the young lover who might complicate everything. Meanwhile, shame descends upon a family when a young boy is forced to become a monk after his widower father finds him dancing in his mother’s clothes. The third intertwined story is that of a young man who discovers that his estranged father has left him a cabaret that features ladyboy performers. Will he sell the club or will they charm him into honoring the stranger that was his father and keep the club open.

Anne Hathaway Donates Part Of Her Wedding Money To Fight For Marriage Equality

October 17, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Anne Hathaway has always been a strong supporter of gay rights, partly because her older brother Michael is gay. She’s spoken out about it before and now she’s putting her money where her mouth is. When she married Adam Shulman in September, she sold photographs of the event, but rather than pocketing the cash, she’s donating it to charities and causes she supports, including marriage equality.

Adam Polaski at Freedom to Marry has released a statement saying, “Hathaway is doing her part to ensure that same-sex couples across the country can enjoy a fairytale wedding like hers; this week, she announced that she’ll be donating some of the sales from her wedding photographs to non-profits advocating for marriage for same-sex couples, including Freedom to Marry.”

Other causes to benefit from Hathaway’s generosity include the American Cancer Society, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, and the Girl Effect.

Polaski adds that this is the “latest way that Hathaway has taken a stand for the freedom to marry. In 2008, she talked publicly for the first time about her brother, who is gay, and explained that their relationship has compelled her to advocate as an ally to the LGBT community.”

Freedom To Marry also says that when Anne was given a Human Rights Campaign Ally Award in 2008, she was forthright about her support for gay rights, saying “I don’t consider myself just an ally to the LGBT community, I consider myself your family. And so, I’m doing what we should all do with our families — I’m loving you, I support you, I completely accept you as you are, as I hope you do me, and if anyone ever tries to hurt you, I’m going to give them hell.”

Shiloh Fernandez Joins Gregg Araki’s White Bird

October 17, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Mysterious Skin, Kaboom and The Doom Generation director Gregg Araki is a fascinating filmmaker, even if sometimes he’s had difficulty reigning in his tendency towards the random and bizarre. He’s currently putting together a new film called White Bird, which already has The Descendants’ Shailene Woodley and Eva Green set to star.

Now they’ve got some male company, as Red Riding Hood’s Shiloh Fernandez has signed up to appear in the movie, according to Deadline. The movie is about a young woman who loses control of her life when her mother disappears. Woodley will be playing the main part, but it’s not clear how Fernandez will play into the story. While Araki’s movies have generally had a very queer sensibility, it isn’t known whether this one will too.

Fernandez will next be seen in the remake of The Evil Dead. It isn’t clear when White Bird might shoot.

Paperboy Helmer Lee Daniels In Talks For Janis Joplin Biopic

October 17, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Precious director Lee Daniels is currently preparing for the release of The Paperboy and busy making The Butler, but he’s already looking to the future, as THR reports that the gay filmmaker is now in talks to direct a biopic of bisexual songstress Janis Joplin, titled Get It While You Can.

Amy Adams is attached to star as the iconic 1960’s singer-songwriter, who tragically died of a heroin overdose in the late 1960s. The artist is best known for her hits Piece of My Heart and Me and Bobby McGee. She also appeared at the original Woodstock in 1969.

People have spent decades trying to put a Joplin biopic together, and just this version has already passed through the hands of the likes of director Catherine Hardwicke and actress Renee Zellweger. It’s not the only Joplin biopic doing the rounds either, as there’s another with Broadway star Nina Arianda in the lead and Marthy Macy May Marlene director Sean Durkin helming. However Daniels’ one may well come first, as they’re planning to start shooting that one early next year.

LGBT Celebs Speak Out For Obama In A New Video

October 16, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Even though I’m based in the UK and therefore not privy to the full day-to-day back and forth of the US Presidential campaigns, I can’t say I’m surprised a laundry list of well-known LGBT Americans have stepped up to support Obama. After all, he repealed Don’t Ask Don’t Tell and has come out in support of equal marriage, while the motto of the Republican campaign basically seems to be ‘Equality and fairness for all (except if you’re not a white, middle class, heterosexual man)’.

In the video the likes of Jane Lynch, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Billie Jean King, George Takei, Wanda Sykes, Zachary Quinto, and Chaz Bono talk about the problems they’ve faced, as well as their support for a President they feel is really making a difference in people’s lives.

I might not be allowed to vote in the US Election, but I’m sure Obama will be pleased to know I’d vote for him too if I could.

James Bond Gets To Flirt With A Guy In Skyfall

October 16, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

A decade of so ago, Rupert Everett said he wanted to play a gay James Bond-type character, but that movie never emerged, and 007 himself has stayed resolutely heterosexual (indeed, in Ian Fleming’s books he can even convert lesbians, turning Pussy Galore straight after a roll in the hay in Goldfinger). However in Skyfall, Daniel Craig gets to show off his metrosexual side, by flirting with Javier Bardem’s villainous Silva.

To add a bit of spice, James Bond is even tied up at the time! This isn’t part of a sexual conversion for the character, but a result of probably omnisexual Silva putting Bond into a sticky situation, caressing his chest and flirting with him, with 007 trying to wangle his way out of it and figure out exactly what’s going on. However the secret agent does comment, “What makes you think this is my first time?”, which does make you wonder what he gets up to when he isn’t on screen.

Both Daniel Craig and Javier Bardem have been talking about the scene, and Movieline managed to nab the comments. Asked if Bond is bluffing about it being his first time, Craig said, ‘”What are you going to do? I don’t see the world in sexual divisions.” He then changed the subject from Bond to Bardem’s wonderfully flamboyant character, Silva. “Someone suggested that Silva may be gay,” Craig said with a big smile. “And I’m like, I think he’ll f*** anything.”‘

The actors adds, “I love that scene, It makes me laugh. I hope it makes you laugh.”

Bardem meanwhile commented about the sexual side of his character, ‘”It was part of the game, but it’s not entirely the game.” Bardem explained that his “main goal” as Silva was creating “uncomfortable situations” for anyone who crossed his path. “Within that, you can read anything that you want or wish,” Bardem said. “But it was more about putting the other person in a very uncomfortable situation where even James Bond doesn’t know how to get out of it.”‘

So is Bond bi? Is there anything he won’t do for queens and country? Maybe we’ll get to find out in later movies.

Skyfall hits UK cinemas on October 26th, with a US release due November 9th.

Funding Sought To Restore Classic 1967 LGBT Film Portrait Of Jason

October 15, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Gay filmmaking before the mid-70s was a tough job, but a few filmmakers managed to bring LGBT stories to the screen. Sadly though, many of the relatively underground, independent efforts have suffered over the years due to the fact the original elements have degraded and preservation has been difficult, partly because few people have wanted to put up the money to restore these slices of gay history.

One movie that’s suffered badly since its release is Shirley Clarke’s 1967 movie Portrait Of Jason, a documentary in which Jason Holliday, aka Aaron Payne, is interviewed about his life as a black, gay hustler in 1960s America. It garnered a lot of interest on its release, as it was one of the first film to look at the life of a real gay person, but it’s virtually disappeared in the last couple of decades due to problems with the surviving prints and degraded elements.

However, now US independent distribution company Milestone Films has stepped up to try and ensure this movie is restored and preserved for posterity, as well as to hopefully give it a re-release so everyone can see this important part of LGBT history. They’ve already spent two years tracking down the necessary elements, but restoration doesn’t come cheap. It will cost around $100,000 for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences Film Archive in LA to fully restore the movie, half of which needs to come from Milestone. To help the company (which is essentially just two people) afford this, they’ve launched a Kickstarter campaign to come up with $25,000 toward the preservation efforts.

The hope is that with that cash, the restoration can be completed and the newly refreshed Portrait Of Jason can screen at the 2013 Berlin Film Festival next February, before reaching a wider audience later that year. If you’d like to find out more, watch the video above and head over the film’s Kickstarter page. As always with these crowdsourcing efforts, there are rewards available depending on how much you give.

Aussie Filmmaker Grant Scicluna Takes The Iris Prize For The Wilding

October 15, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The Iris Prize Festival in Cardiff is over for another year (expect more coverage from us in the next few days, looking at what went on), and the winner of the main awards has been announced. The Iris Prize is notable for being the largest LGBT short film prize in the world, offering the winner not just a pat on the back, but also support and funding for their next short film (worth £25,000).

At a reception hosted by comedienne Amy Lame, the winning short – picked from the 31 films on the shortlist – was announced as The Wilding, directed by Australia’s Grant Scicluna. The short follows a juvenile inmate called Malcolm who is offered a chance at parole, who becomes torn between his chance for freedom and protecting the one he loves – his cellmate Tye.

Iris Prize jury chair Lisa Power commented, “The Wilding was wonderfully self-assured. It took a familiar trope and turned it into an extraordinary story. This was a special film which demanded attention and every which way we counted the votes and considered our options The Wilding came out on top.”

The other winners at the ceremony were:
• A Stable for Disabled Horses (directed by Fabio Youniss) – Best UK Short
• Sex of Angels (directed by Xavier Villaverde) – Iris Prize Best Feature Award
• Ohad Knoller (Yossi in Yossi) Best Actor in a Feature
• Kristina Valada-Viars (Molly in Molly’s Girl) Best Actress in a Feature

Yeah Kowalski directed by Evan Roberts (USA) and These Empty Streets directed by Jarrah Gurrie (Australia) were highly commended by the jury.

As well as the shorts, the five day festival also included eight of the latest gay and lesbian feature films, which all enjoyed their UK premieres at the festival. These movies included Yossi, Gayby, Sex Of Angels and Joshua Tree 1951: A Portrait Of James Dean.

Now it’s on to next year’s festival!
