Lee Daniels May Remake Terms of Endearment With Oprah Winfrey Starring

February 14, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Director Lee Daniels and Oprah Winfrey has a very successful collaboration with The Butler, which scored Winfrey a BAFTA nomination, and found plenty of commercial success. Now it looks like they may be getting back together, for a remake of Terms Of Endearment.

It is apparently very early days on the project and neither Winfrey or Daniels is saying much, but TheWrap reports that Paramount has bought the rights to Terms Of Endearment for the Empire and Precious filmmaker, with Winfrey apparently circling the role of Aurora Greenway, memorably played by an Oscar-winning Shirley MacLaine in the 1983 movie version.

Larry McMurtry’s original novel follows the life of Aurora and her daughter, Emma. While the daughter has an unsuccessful marriage and deals with health issues, the widowed Aurora is looking for a new lease of life, which includes getting to know the drunken astronaut who lives next (previously played by Jack Nicholson, who also won an Oscar).

Although messing with a classic is tough, Winfrey could be a good choice is Hollywood does want to take on Terms Of Endearment again. However, we’ll have to wait and see whether it really happens.

Tracy Morgan Up for Lee Daniels’ Richard Pryor Biopic

November 15, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

tracy-morganFollowing his terrible vehicle accident, it’s taken Tracy Morgan a long time to get his health back and be ready to start working again. He’s made a few TV appearances, including hosting SNL, and now he’s ready to book a full acting gig, as the 30 Rock star is in talks to play legendary comedian Red Foxx in the long-gestating biopic of Richard Pryor.

The film has been in the works for years, but got new life recently with Lee Daniels (Precious, Empire) taking the director’s chair, Bill Condon (Dreamgirls) and Danny Strong (Empire) writing the script, and Mike Epps playing the iconic Pryor.

Foxx and Pryor played important roles in each others’ career, with Pryor getting his start as the opening act and Foxx’s comedy club. Then, once Pryor became famous, he repaid the favour by helping get Foxx onto Hollywood’s radar, resulting in the iconic sitcom, Sanford & Son.

Oprah Winfrey is also on board as Pryor’s grandmother, with Eddie Murphy and Taraji P. Henson as his parents and Kate Hudson as his wife.

Director Lee Daniels Takes On Falsely Accused Rapist Tale

August 8, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

lee-danielsPrecious and The Butler tale is busy lining up new projects, and one he’s now got in the works, according to Variety, currently has the rather uninspired title, The Brian Banks Story.

The film will tell the true story of an Banks, an ‘All-American high school football player who, in 2002, had committed to USC’s football program before being accused of rape. Banks maintained his innocence, but a hasty plea bargain resulted in Brian serving over five years in prison, five years on parole and registering as a sex offender.

‘Through the California Innocence Project, Banks’ conviction was overturned in 2012. He played in four pre-season games for the Atlanta Falcons and is now a motivational speaker and an activist and spokesperson for the California Innocence Project.’

It’s certainly a potentially emotive and difficult subject, however Banks comments, “All I ever wanted was to prove my innocence. Telling my story in the form of a feature film is beyond my wildest dreams.”

Producer Amy Baer says, “Lee is a filmmaker who looks at challenging circumstances with honesty, compassion, and hope. He has an emotional connection to Brian’s story that I’m certain will result in a powerful and redemptive film.”

Butler Director Lee Daniels Admits To Contemplating Suicide Over Anti-Gay & Racist Bullying

December 31, 2013 By Tim Isaac 2 Comments

lee-danielsLee Daniels has emerged as one of the few African-American directors with any real clout in Hollywood thanks to the success of The Butler. As well as being a black director, he’s also gay one, a fact he’s been open about since the beginning of his career.

He has previously talked about his difficulties growing up, talking about how his father continually beat him due to his sexuality. Now he’s been telling THR about how his childhood experiences led him to contemplate suicide.

He says, “I had a rough childhood growing up – very rough. Oftentimes I wanted to kill myself as a kid. You know, I was bullied because I was gay and then I was bullied because I was black going to an all-white school later on. Thank God I didn’t kill myself, huh? I think that the universe took care and God took care of me. I am the product of that environment.”

The Previous and Paperboy director has previously suggested that his identity and experiences growing up have had a profound effect on who he is as an artist. He adds to THR how his problems as a youth made cinema such as important part of his life.

He says, “I was always in trouble. I was mischievous. And movies were always a part of my world. Wizard of Oz; Cinderella with Lesley Ann Warren; oh, man, a lot of black exploitation films that were rated-R that I shouldn’t have seen but that I snuck into the back of the theaters to see – Cleopatra Jones. [laughs] Yeah, they were very much a part of my life.”

Lee Daniels Wants To Make A Gay, Interracial Action Movie Starring Alex Pettyfer

October 11, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Alex Pettyfer in Magic Mike

Alex Pettyfer

The Butler’s Lee Daniels is a gay, African-American filmmaker, however his films so far, such as Precious and The Paperboy, haven’t really explored his gay side that deeply (although all have definitely been informed by his queer point of view and experiences growing up).

Now Daniels says he wants to bring the two things together with a gay, interracial action film, which he wants Alex Pettyfer to star in. The director told Out, “Alex Pettyfer is in it, [but] I have to find the right black guy opposite him. He’s so hot, isn’t he? So hot. And so aware of his hotness in a way that’s so…I love him to death.”

However he does rather spoil the film’s big twist by saying the movie is like, “Mr. and Mrs. Smith but the two good-looking guys as the action heroes. We don’t find out they’re gay until the end of the movie.”

It’ll be tough to get it made, as all the studios turned down Behind The Candelabra, despite the fact it only cost a few million and had Matt Damon and Michael Douglas set to star. Whether they’ll want to pay a lot more for a gay-themed action flick is tough to guess.

Daniels seems to think he can make it happen though, saying, “I don’t think I’m going to have a problem now. I made a $100 million for The Butler. I’m in a rare group. So this is something I feel good about.”

The director has other reasons to feel happy at the moment, as it’s been announced that Daniels will receive Outfest’s Visionary Award in recognition of his contribution to LGBT arts and media visibility.

“I am extremely flattered and humbled to be receiving this year’s Visionary Award,” said Lee. “Outfest is an extraordinary organization, and I cannot stress enough the importance of its mission. In both my professional and personal life, I constantly strive to represent and provide a voice for the LGBT community, and am so honored that the Legacy Awards have selected me as this year’s recipient.”

The Butler Director Lee Daniels Says My Father ‘Just Kept Beating Me For Being Gay’

September 23, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

lee-danielsLee Daniels’ directorial career has certainly grown in the past few years thanks to Precious, The Paperboy and his recent hit, The Butler. He’s one of the few African-American directors currently having success in Hollywood and has also never made a secret of the fact he’s gay.

Now he’s been talking about the difficulties he faced growing up gay and black, not least his father’s violent reaction to finding out his son liked boys.

In an interview with US radio station KCRW, he says, “I ran from that for such a long time – my identity – because I was beaten for it, and then my dad died and I was sort of happy that he did because I dunno that I would have been alive, he’d just kept beating me for being gay. So my mom didn’t want me around cause then… in the African American community we don’t embrace that [being gay]. You know, we simply don’t because men have to be strong and being gay is not a good thing. And so my mom took me to an all-white school… at that point I went from being ‘gay, gay, gay’ to ‘n—er, n—er, n—er.’ …It’s a very, very, very painful experience to live and I try to show that in all of my work, you know, the personal atrocities that I’ve lived.”

Paperboy Helmer Lee Daniels In Talks For Janis Joplin Biopic

October 17, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Precious director Lee Daniels is currently preparing for the release of The Paperboy and busy making The Butler, but he’s already looking to the future, as THR reports that the gay filmmaker is now in talks to direct a biopic of bisexual songstress Janis Joplin, titled Get It While You Can.

Amy Adams is attached to star as the iconic 1960’s singer-songwriter, who tragically died of a heroin overdose in the late 1960s. The artist is best known for her hits Piece of My Heart and Me and Bobby McGee. She also appeared at the original Woodstock in 1969.

People have spent decades trying to put a Joplin biopic together, and just this version has already passed through the hands of the likes of director Catherine Hardwicke and actress Renee Zellweger. It’s not the only Joplin biopic doing the rounds either, as there’s another with Broadway star Nina Arianda in the lead and Marthy Macy May Marlene director Sean Durkin helming. However Daniels’ one may well come first, as they’re planning to start shooting that one early next year.
