Elvis & Nixon (DVD Review)

October 30, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Michael Shannon, Kevin Spacey, Alex Pettyfer, Evan Peters, Colin Hanks
Director: Liza Johnson
Running Time: 84 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: October 31st 2016 (UK)

Elvis & Nixon is a movie spun out from a single moment – a meeting between Elvis Presley and President Richard Nixon in December 1970, which resulted in a picture of the two of them, which is apparently the most requested image from the US National Archive. Here we get Michael Shannon as a surprisingly good Elvis, and Kevin Spacey as a slightly more human Nixon that we might be used to.

The movie picks up a while before the meeting, with Elvis fed up with the direction the country is heading – he doesn’t like hippies, the anti-Vietnam protests or The Beatles – so he decides he wants to become a Federal Agent and go undercover to help sort things out. While Elvis is used to having people around who organise his life for him, he decides he’s got to sort this out himself, reaching out to his long-time friend, Jerry (Alex Pettyfer), to help him. New Endless Love Trailer – Alex Pettyfer & Gabriella Wilde are too much in love

January 10, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

After Magic Mike, Alex Pettyfer is getting sexy again, this time in a remake of the 1981 movie, Endless Love. Now a new trailer for the movie has been released.

Brooke Shields and Martin Hewitt starred in the earlier version, which was about a young man and woman who fall desperately in love with one another. However the girl’s parent decide their passion is too strong and try to stop them from seeing each other, especially when they begin to uncover his past. However as their relationship get ever more extreme, they may have to eventually realise that is they don’t stop, their desire is going to kill both of them. The new version will apparently stick quite close to that plot.

The 1981 movie is also noted for marking Tom Cruise’s movie debut. The film’s out in the US in February.

Lee Daniels Wants To Make A Gay, Interracial Action Movie Starring Alex Pettyfer

October 11, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Alex Pettyfer in Magic Mike

The Butler’s Lee Daniels is a gay, African-American filmmaker, however his films so far, such as Precious and The Paperboy, haven’t really explored his gay side that deeply (although all have definitely been informed by his queer point of view and experiences growing up).

Now Daniels says he wants to bring the two things together with a gay, interracial action film, which he wants Alex Pettyfer to star in. The director told Out, “Alex Pettyfer is in it, [but] I have to find the right black guy opposite him. He’s so hot, isn’t he? So hot. And so aware of his hotness in a way that’s so…I love him to death.”

However he does rather spoil the film’s big twist by saying the movie is like, “Mr. and Mrs. Smith but the two good-looking guys as the action heroes. We don’t find out they’re gay until the end of the movie.”

It’ll be tough to get it made, as all the studios turned down Behind The Candelabra, despite the fact it only cost a few million and had Matt Damon and Michael Douglas set to star. Whether they’ll want to pay a lot more for a gay-themed action flick is tough to guess.

Daniels seems to think he can make it happen though, saying, “I don’t think I’m going to have a problem now. I made a $100 million for The Butler. I’m in a rare group. So this is something I feel good about.”

The director has other reasons to feel happy at the moment, as it’s been announced that Daniels will receive Outfest’s Visionary Award in recognition of his contribution to LGBT arts and media visibility.

“I am extremely flattered and humbled to be receiving this year’s Visionary Award,” said Lee. “Outfest is an extraordinary organization, and I cannot stress enough the importance of its mission. In both my professional and personal life, I constantly strive to represent and provide a voice for the LGBT community, and am so honored that the Legacy Awards have selected me as this year’s recipient.”

Gus Van Sant & Alex Pettyfer Shoot Fifty Shades of Grey Test Scene

April 24, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Ever since Universal snapped up the rights to Fifty Shades Of Grey, with plans to make a steamy movie version, there’s been a lot of interest in who would star and direct. Now gay Good Will Hunting and Promised Land helmer Gus Van Sant is making a bid for the directing job, as The Wrap reports that he’s shot a test scene with Alex Pettyfer playing Christian Grey.

The scene is apparently the one where naive college student Anastasia Steele loses her virginity to the kinky Grey.

Of course, shooting a test scene and getting the job are different things, and there’s no guarantee either Van Sant or Pettyfer will be involved in the final movie, but it certainly gives Universal a strong option. The scene was apparently completely unsolicited, but shows the director and actor’s interest.

There are still hurdles for the adaptation, not least translating the BDSM heavy ‘mommy porn’ tome into something that US cinemas will accept (particularly difficult as if it gets an adults-only NC-17 rating, many theatres won’t book it, and some newspapers won’t even accept ads). Kelly Marcel is currently writing the script.

However, as Brett Easton Ellis ignited controversy for saying Matt Bomer was ‘too gay’ to play Christian Grey last year, we’ll have to wait and see if he thinks Gus Van Sant is too gay to direct.

Leo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire & Jennifer Lawrence Out For GLAAD Media Awards (But Bret Easton Ellis says he was banned)

April 22, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

glaad-media-awards-slide
The stars were out in force on Saturday night for the GLAAD Media Awards in Los Angeles, where Bill Clinton was handed the ‘Advocate for Change Award’ by Harvey Weinstein and Jennifer Lawrence, while Leo DiCaprio and Charlize Theron gave entertainment lawyer Steve Warner the ‘Stephen F. Kolzak Award’ for his work for gay causes.

‘Outstanding Film – Wide Release’ went to The Perks Of Being A Wallflower, while The New Normal got ‘Outstanding Comedy Series’ and American Horror Story: Asylum won ‘Outstanding TV Movie or Mini-Series’.

Guests at the shindig included Darren Criss, Kelly Rowland, Andrew Rannells, Justin Bartha, Chaz Bono, Wilson Cruz, Logan Lerman, Ellen Pompeo, Eric Dane, Beth Ditto, Trevor Donovan, Kirsten Dunst, Chris Evans and his gay brother Scott Evans, Elle Fanning, Joshua Jackson, Tobey Maguire, Alex Pettyfer, Teri Polo, Molly Shannon, Matt Dallas and Betty White. You can take a look at a few of those guests below.

However there has been a bit of controversy, as Bret Easton Ellis has said that he was banned from the event. He was due to attend as the guest of one of those invited, but Ellis tweeted that, “As a gay man in a domestic partnership who plans to get married I’m sad to hear I’ve been banned by Glaad from attending tomorrow’s event… Glaad is supposedly ‘furious’ about my tweets. And I’m guessing not the ones concerning my boyfriend or how sexy I think Adam Driver is.”

GLAAD has responded, with the organisation’s vice president of communications Rich Ferraro telling the Hollywood Reporter, “GLAAD spoke with the guest who was planning to bring Bret about some of Bret’s recent remarks, which the gay community responded negatively to. We also asked for a time to sit down with Bret. They decided to replace Bret with a different guest and there has been no response to the offer of a meeting.”

Ellis has slip opinion with tweets such as comparing watching Glee to “stepping into a puddle of HIV”, and also provoked fury among some for saying that Matt Bomer is ‘too gay’ to play Christian Grey in the film version of 50 Shades Of Grey. It’s not only the LGBT community he’s managed to piss off, as recently he apologised for saying Kathryn Bigelow only won the Best Director Oscar for The Hurt Locker because she’s a ‘hot woman’.

Ellis seems resolutely unimpressed by GLAAD though, making the perhaps salient point, “Bill Clinton signed Doma [Defense of Marriage Act] and Don’t Ask Don’t Tell and cheated on Hillary… I dissed Glee and Matt Bomer as Christian Grey. GLAAD: RIGHT ON!”

Take a look below for all the winners from Saturday night’s awards, and a few pics from the event below that.

Alex Pettyfer & Gabriella Wilde Find Endless Love

March 22, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Director Shana Feste is getting the beautiful people together for a remake of Franco Zeferelli’s Endless Love, with Variety reporting that Gabriella Wilde and Alex Pettyfer are set to star.

Brooke Shields and Martin Hewitt starred in the 1981 version, which was about two teenagers, Jade and David, who fall desperately in love with one another. However Jade’s parent decide their passion is too string and try to stop them from seeing each other. Even David’s rather extreme reaction of burning down Jade’s parents’ house isn’t enough to break them up, although they may have to eventually realise that is they don’t stop, their desire is going to kill both of them. The new version will apparently stick quite close to that plot.

The roles have attracted quite a lot of young talent, with Magic Mike’s Alex Pettyfer beating out Brenton Thwaites for the male lead, with Three Musketeer’s Wilde scoring the female lead over Sarah Bolger and Olivia Cooke.

Alex Pettyfer, Lucas Till And Jeremy Irvine Eyed For Divergent

January 9, 2013 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

divergent-leadA couple of month ago, The Descendants star Shailene Woodley signed up to take the female lead in the adaptation of Veronica Roth’s novel Divergent, and now Variety reports that Alex Pettyfer (Magic Mike), Jeremy Irvine (War Horse) and Lucas Till (X-Men: First Class) are at the top of the list to take the main male role.

The book, which is drawing comparisons to The Hunger Games, is about a 16-year-old girl named Beatrice Prior, who lives in a society divided into five factions, each based on a different virtue: honesty, selflessness, bravery, peacefulness, and intelligence. Beatrice must choose which faction whe wants to try and join, and starts training in order to enter.

Variety doesn’t specifically mention the male character Pettyfer, Irvin and Till are up for, but it’s presumed it’s Four, the man who helps train Beatrice.

Neil Burger will direct this first installment of what is being set up as a trilogy.

Magic Mike (DVD)

November 25, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Matthew McConaughey, Alex Pettyfer, Matt Bomer, Cody Horn, Channing Tatum
Director: Steven Soderbergh
Running Time: 105 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: November 26th 2012

While there was a lot of interest in Magic Mike before it was released in cinemas, I don’t think many people suspected that this $7 million budgeted movie would pull in over $100 million at the US box office, or get quite so many people so excited. There’s little doubt much of the interest in the film is that while women are routinely sexualised in cinemas, its rarer for a film to come along that offers the girls and gay guys something to get hot under the collar about, with male characters unabashedly served up for their sexual delectation.
