Baby Driver (Blu-ray Review) – Kevin Spacey coerces a young man for director Edgar Wright

November 12, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Ansel Elgort, Lily James, Jon Hamm, Kevin Spacey, Jamie Foxx
Director: Edgar Wright
Running Time: 112 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: November 13th 2017 (UK)

The subheading about Kevin Spacey above may be a bit unfair, but I do wonder whether director Edgar Wright is wishing right now he’d picked someone else to play a powerful man coercing a much younger guy to do his bidding. There are also moments in the special features on the Blu-ray where they’re talking about how wonderful Spacey is and how good he is at ‘playing’ a manipulative asshole, where you know the distributors wish they’d had time to cut it out before the disc his shelves, but which certainly give things an unexpected subtext now.

Thankfully though, the presence of the disgraced actor doesn’t completely overshadow the movie, which got great reviews and word of mouth on its cinema release for reasons that had nothing to do with Spacey. [Read more…]

Kevin Spacey Being Replaced By Christopher Plummer In Already Completed Movie

November 11, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Few people’s career have plummeted so fast and so completely as Kevin Spacey’s in the last couple of weeks, following a barrage of accusations of sexual harassment and assault, kicked off by allegations from actor Anthony Rapp that Spacey attempted to sleep with him when he was oly 14.

The ultimate piece of evidence that this is not something Spacey is ever likely to come back from is the decision by Ridley Scott to remove the actor from a movie that’s already been completed and is due out in the US in only six weeks time. Spacey was due to play billionaire John Paul Getty in the film All the Money in the World, about the kidnapping of Getty’s grandson.

He will now be replaced by veteran actor Christopher Plummer, with Ridley planning 10 days of shooting, which will also involve the likes of the movie’s other stars, Mark Wahlberg and Michelle Williams. It’s believed that in many of Spacey’s scenes he was either the only one on screen or it was a relatively simple set-up, making it relatively easy to replce him. Some more complex location work is likely to see Spacey replaced using visual effects.

The replacement is being done at Scott and the film’s production company’s expense. However, the movie’s distributor, Sony Pictures Entertainment, is still keen to keep the movie’s December 22nd US release date, which will allow it to be eligible for next year’s Oscars, so the work will have to be done exceptionally quickly.

Kevin Spacey Seeking ‘Treatment’ As Netflix Cuts Ties & More Sexual Harassment Claims Emerge

November 5, 2017 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

Last week Kevin Spacey was named by Anthony Rapp as the man he said had tried to sleep with him when he was just 14 (Rapp had told the story year before to The Advocate, but the name of the older man was redacted). Spacey may have hoped that his subsequent ‘apology’ and coming out would minimise the impact on his career, but instead he has been hit with a firestorm of accusations and anger.

Many were furious that as part of his ‘apology’ he also came out as gay, which to many looked like an attempt to deflect attention from the allegations. He also gave a gift to homophobes by both equating homosexuality and pedophilia, and saying that he ‘chooses’ to live as a gay man.

He has also been hit with a multitude of other allegation, both from those who, like Rapp, say he targeted them while they were underage, and those who says he sexually harassed them when they were young men. London’s Old Vic Theatre, where Spacey was artistic director for a decade, has even set up a confidential phoneline for anyone those who wany support, against a background of stories that he sexually harassed many of the young actors who worked there.

Spacey himself has kept a low profile, with his only post ‘apology’ communication coming via his agents, who released a statement saying, ‘Kevin Spacey is taking the time necessary to seek evaluation and treatment. No other information is available at this time.’

The allegations came just as Spacey was starting to shoot Season 6 of House Of Cards. While there was already talk that this would mark the end of the show, Netflix has now confirmed that and also severed ties with the actor, saying “Netflix will not be involved with any further production of House of Cards that includes Kevin Spacey.” Although they still hope to make a sixth season of the hit series, they will now look at ways of killing Spacey’s character off before filming restarts. They may cancel the series instead, and are said to be exploring the possibility of spin-offs. Netflix was also backing a Gore Vidal biopic staring Spacey, but that has also been cancelled.

Media Right Capital, the production company behind House Of Cards, is also looking at a series of allegation about inappropriate behaviour on the set of the award-winning show. They say, “While we continue the ongoing investigation into the serious allegations concerning Kevin Spacey’s behavior on the set of ‘House of Cards,’ he has been suspended, effective immediately. MRC, in partnership with Netflix, will continue to evaluate a creative path forward for the program during the hiatus.”

At the moment Spacey’s career is essentially dead, and it’s difficult to imagine there’s any way back for him. Indeed, with some of his accusers alleging serious crimes, he may be spending a lot of time in court.

Kevin Spacey Apologises & Comes Out After Anthony Rapp Alleges Inappropriate Conduct When He Was Underage

October 30, 2017 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

Anthony Rapp in Rent (2005)

For decades rumours have swirled that Kevin Spacey was gay. Now that’s been confirmed, but in a way that has attracted fury from many. Spacey came out following allegations by actor Anthony Rapp that the double Oscar-winning actor made a sexual pass at him when Rapp was just 14-years-old.

Rapp says the event took place in 1986, when he was appearing on Broadway in Precious Sons, and Spacey had a supporting role in a revival of Long Day’s Journey Into Night. The young actor went to a party at Spacey’s house, where he soon discovered he didn’t know anyone else, and so ended up watching TV alone.

Talking to Buzzfeed, Rapp says it eventually got later than he’d realised, “My memory was that I thought, Oh, everybody’s gone. Well, yeah, I should probably go home.” Spacey, he recalled, “sort of stood in the doorway, kind of swaying. My impression when he came in the room was that he was drunk… He picked me up like a groom picks up the bride over the threshold. But I don’t, like, squirm away initially, because I’m like, ‘What’s going on?’ And then he lays down on top of me. He was trying to seduce me. I don’t know if I would have used that language. But I was aware that he was trying to get with me sexually.”

Eventually he managed to squirm away and get to the bathroom, “I was like, ‘What is happening?’ I saw on the counter next to the sink a picture of him having his arm around a man. So I think on some level I was like, Oh. He’s gay. I guess. Then I opened the door, and I was like, ‘OK, I’m going to go home now.’ He followed me to the front door of the apartment, and as I opened the door to leave, he was leaning on the front door[frame]. And he was like, ‘Are you sure you wanna go?’ I said, ‘Yes, good night,’ and then I did leave…

“My head was spinning. I have a memory of turning around and [thinking], What was that? What am I supposed to do with it? What does it mean?… The older I get, and the more I know, I feel very fortunate that something worse didn’t happen. And at the same time, the older I get, the more I can’t believe it. I could never imagine [that] anyone else I know would do something like that to a 14-year-old boy.”

After the Rent and Star Trek: Discovery actor stepped forward to talk about his experience and how it has affected him over the year, Spacey issued a response on Twitter: ‘I have a lot of respect and admiration for Anthony Rapp as an actor. I’m beyond horrified to hear his story. I honestly do not remember the encounter, it would have been over 30 years ago. But if I did behave then as he describes, I owe him the sincerest apology for what would have been deeply inappropriate drunken behavior, and I am sorry for the feelings he describes having carried with him all these years.’

‘This story has encouraged me to address other things about my life. I know that there are stories out there about me and that some have been fueled by the fact I have been so protective of my privacy. As those closest to me know, in my life I have had relationships with both men and women. I have loved and had romantic encounters with men throughout my life, and I choose now to live as a gay man. I want to deal with this honestly and openly and for me that starts by examining my own behavior.’

Many however were furious not just about what Spacey is said to have done to an underage boy, but also at the way his statement appears to be attempting to deflect criticism by coming out as gay. He appears with his statement to have tried to take some measure of responsibility by not denying the claim, however many have seen the second paragraph as an attempt to move the focus away from Rapp’s allegations and onto Spacey revealing he’s gay.

There have also been many who have found it extremely troubling and problematic that by talking about allegations of inapporiate conduct with someone who was underage in the context of him coming out, Spacey has conflated homosexuality with pedophilia –  a stereotype the gay community has been fighting for decades. As a result, many celebrities and others have taken Spacey to task not just for what he’s said to have done, but also for the way he responded.

GLAAD president Sarah Kate Ellis took to Twitter to say, ‘Coming out stories should not be used to deflect from allegations of sexual assault… This isn’t a coming out story about Spacey, but a story of survivorship by Anthony Rapp & those who speak out about unwanted sexual advances. The media and public should not gloss over that.’

It has also been revealed that Spacey’s hit show, House Of Cards, will end after it’s upcoming sixth season. They also released a statement saying, “Media Rights Capital and Netflix are deeply troubled by last night’s news concerning Kevin Spacey. In response to last night’s revelations, executives from both of our companies arrived in Baltimore this afternoon to meet with our cast and crew to ensure that they continue to feel safe and supported. As previously scheduled, Kevin Spacey is not working on set at this time.”

Zachary Quinto, who appeared alongside Spacey in the film Margin Call,  perhaps summed things up in the statement he released: ‘It is deeply sad and troubling that this is how Kevin Spacey has chosen to come out. Not by standing up as a point of pride – in the light of all his many awards and accomplishments – thus inspiring tens of thousands of struggling LGBTQ kids around the world, but as a calculated manipulation to deflect attention from the very serious accusation that he attempted to molest one.

‘I am sorry to hear of Anthony Rapp’s experience and subsequent suffering. And I am sorry that Kevin only saw fit to acknowledge his truth when he thought it could serve him – just as his denial served him for so many years. May Anthony Rapp’s voice be the only one which is amplified here. Victim’s voices are the ones that deserve to be heard.”

Elvis & Nixon (DVD Review)

October 30, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Michael Shannon, Kevin Spacey, Alex Pettyfer, Evan Peters, Colin Hanks
Director: Liza Johnson
Running Time: 84 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: October 31st 2016 (UK)

Elvis & Nixon is a movie spun out from a single moment – a meeting between Elvis Presley and President Richard Nixon in December 1970, which resulted in a picture of the two of them, which is apparently the most requested image from the US National Archive. Here we get Michael Shannon as a surprisingly good Elvis, and Kevin Spacey as a slightly more human Nixon that we might be used to.

The movie picks up a while before the meeting, with Elvis fed up with the direction the country is heading – he doesn’t like hippies, the anti-Vietnam protests or The Beatles – so he decides he wants to become a Federal Agent and go undercover to help sort things out. While Elvis is used to having people around who organise his life for him, he decides he’s got to sort this out himself, reaching out to his long-time friend, Jerry (Alex Pettyfer), to help him. Kevin Spacey Joins Rebel in the Rye Opposite Nicholas Hoult as J.D. Salinger

January 20, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Kevin-Spacey

Last September it was revealed that Nicholas Hoult had signed on to star in a biopic of writer J.D. Salinger called Rebel In The Eye. Now he’s got some company, as Variety reports that Kevin Spacey will co-star.

It’s previously been promised that the film ‘takes us on a journey into the life and mind of the legendary and secretive author and tells the story of the birth of The Catcher in the Rye. As the author who captivated a generation, JD Salinger soared to the heights of the literary world but left it all behind for a life of seclusion. Through his rebellious youth, the bloody front lines of World War 2, enduring great love and terrible loss, a life of rejection to the pages of The New Yorker, and the PTSD-fueled writer’s block which led to a spiritual awakening.’

Spacey meanwhile will be Whit Burnett, a professor at Columbia and editor of Story Magazine, who becomes Salinger’s mentor and challenges him to become a better writer.

Danny Strong (who co-created Empire and wrote the scripts for the likes of Hunger Games: Mockingjay and The Butler) will write and direct the movie. It’s believed the movie will shoot some time fairly soon.
