Ridley Scott May Take On Disney’s The Merlin Saga

Ridley Scott recently turned 80, but he’s showing no signs of slowing down. He released two movies in 2017 (Alien: Covenant and All The Money In The World), and now he’s lining up his next flick.

Variety reports that the current most likely contender is Disney’s The Merlin Saga, which Scott is in talks to direct. Although he hasn’t signed on the dotted line, sources suggest is will likely be his next movie.

The film will be based on T.A. Barron’s books, which follow ‘the origin story of a young Merlin who would go on to become the mentor of the classic literary character King Arthur.’

While several King Arthur movies have been in development all over Hollywood, and Guy Ritchie’s recent Arthurian film starring Charlie Hunnam failed, Disney still thinks it’s worth betting on. As well as The Merlin Saga, they’re also working on a live-action version of Sword In The Stone. Scott has apparently met the producers of that movie, which suggests they’re hoping the two can live alongside one another, perhaps building the sort of Arthurian franchise Ritchie was hoping for (but more magical).

Philippa Boyens, best known for co-writing many of Peter Jackson’s movies, including Lord Of The Rings and The Hobbit, is set to pen the screenplay. It’s not known when we might see the movie.

Kevin Spacey Being Replaced By Christopher Plummer In Already Completed Movie

Few people’s career have plummeted so fast and so completely as Kevin Spacey’s in the last couple of weeks, following a barrage of accusations of sexual harassment and assault, kicked off by allegations from actor Anthony Rapp that Spacey attempted to sleep with him when he was oly 14.

The ultimate piece of evidence that this is not something Spacey is ever likely to come back from is the decision by Ridley Scott to remove the actor from a movie that’s already been completed and is due out in the US in only six weeks time. Spacey was due to play billionaire John Paul Getty in the film All the Money in the World, about the kidnapping of Getty’s grandson.

He will now be replaced by veteran actor Christopher Plummer, with Ridley planning 10 days of shooting, which will also involve the likes of the movie’s other stars, Mark Wahlberg and Michelle Williams. It’s believed that in many of Spacey’s scenes he was either the only one on screen or it was a relatively simple set-up, making it relatively easy to replce him. Some more complex location work is likely to see Spacey replaced using visual effects.

The replacement is being done at Scott and the film’s production company’s expense. However, the movie’s distributor, Sony Pictures Entertainment, is still keen to keep the movie’s December 22nd US release date, which will allow it to be eligible for next year’s Oscars, so the work will have to be done exceptionally quickly.

All The Money In The World Trailer – Kevin Spacey is J. Paul Getty in Ridley Scott’s kidnapping movie

When most people get a little older they start to slow down and contemplate retirement. However, others start working even harder. One of those people is 79-year-old Ridley Scott. Not content with having directed a bid budget sci-fi movie this year (Alien: Covenant) has decided to squeeze in a drama as well – All The Money In The World.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘ALL THE MONEY IN THE WORLD follows the kidnapping of 16-year-old John Paul Getty III (Charlie Plummer) and the desperate attempt by his devoted mother Gail (Michelle Williams) to convince his billionaire grandfather (Kevin Spacey) to pay the ransom. When Getty Sr. refuses, Gail attempts to sway him as her son’s captors become increasingly volatile and brutal. With her son’s life in the balance, Gail and Getty’s advisor (Mark Wahlberg) become unlikely allies in the race against time that ultimately reveals the true and lasting value of love over money.’

Michael Fassbender’s Alien: Covenant Gay Kiss Cut From Chinese Release By Censors

One of the most intriguing scenes in Alien: Covenant involves Michael Fassbender snogging himself – or least the androids he plays, Walter and David, lean in for a kiss. However, Chinese audiences won’t get the unusual pleasure of the actor kissing himself, as the censors in the country have cut it from the movie.

As THR reports, Chinese censors routinely cut a lot of the violence from Hollywood films, including 14 minutes from Logan and eight from Resident Evil: The Final Chapter. However, the six minutes that it took from Alien: Covenant wasn’t just about violence, as it also included the android-on-android gay kiss.

The ommission was noted shortly after the movie’s release on Friday, with Yu, a 26-year-old assistant at an advertising agency in Shanghai, quoted as saying, “For the other missing parts you don’t notice or know when it happens, but you can really feel something is missing where the gay kiss is supposed to be.”

Many knew the peck was supposed to be there after seeing media reports, and apparently the way it has been excised from the film is quite abrupt.

The Chinese censors are known to be pretty inconsistent with gay content, allowing it in some films and not in others. Some have suggested this shows divisions between more liberal and conservative parts of the censors’ office, with others saying it’s more political, both internally and externally. For example, allowing the innocuous ‘gay moment’ in Beauty & The Beast was trumpeted in the People’s Daily Worker, while the likes of Brokeback Mountain and even some Chinese-produced movies with gay content have been banned outright.

Crush Of The Day: Michael Fassbender Kisses Himself In Alien: Covenant

If you haven’t seen Alien: Covenant, you might be interested in one scene, which involves Michael Fassbender getting intimate with himself. In the movie, Fassbender plays two different androids – David from the first movie, and the supposedly more advanced Walter.

They have an interesting relationship including a scene where David teaches Walter how to play the flute (phallic imagery alert), including the easily misinterpreted line, “I’ll do the fingering.” As THR describes it, David then declared ‘”you have symphonies in you, brother!” Later, the pair share a kiss, with David telling Walter no one will ever love like he does — before attempting to kill him.’

Whether it’s brotherly or something more will depend on your interpretation. However, as co-writer Dante Harper describes it as the ‘David seduces Walter’, and that it was designed to be homoerotic, it would appear we’re not just seing things.

New Alien Covenant Poster Offers Up A Creepy Xenomorph Vision

Fox is going all out to say the Alien Covenant will not be like Prometheus, and it will indeed feature lots of the xenomorphs we come to know and love/hate. That continues with the new poster below, which manages to be rather creepy and also unusually artistic (for Hollywood at least).

Here’s the brief synopsis: ‘Set as the second chapter in a prequel trilogy that began with Prometheus, Alien: Covenant connects directly to Ridley Scott’s 1979 seminal work of science fiction. It begins with the colony ship Covenant, bound for a remote planet on the far side of the galaxy. Ridley Scott Directing Movie About Getty Kidnapping, With Natalie Portman Circling To Star

Ridley Scott is busy finishing up his latest Alien movie, Covenant, and while he’s promised there’s another trip into world of xenomorphs coming in the future, he’s planning something rather different before he completes his Alien prequel trilogy. Variety reports he’s set to direct a movie about the real-life kidnapping of the grandson of billionaire John Paul Getty, with Natalie Portman possibly starring.

The film will be about, ‘the 1973 kidnap in Italy of J. Paul Getty III — the rebellious teenage grandson of oil billionaire J. Paul Getty, who was reluctant to pay the $17 million ransom demanded by the kidnappers… The kidnappers sent a lock of hair and the teen’s severed right ear to the family to convince them pay the ransom. Harris and the boy’s father eventually convinced the elder Getty to pay a $2.9 million ransom, resulting in the teenager being freed after six months. He had been chained to a stake in a cave in Italy.’

Natalie Portman is circling the role of John Paul Getty III’s mother, Gail Harris, a role Angelina Jolie was recently offered, but turned down due to scheduling issues. Scott is planning to start shooting almost immediately after he’s completed publicity duties on Alien:Covenant, with filming set to begin in Italy in late May.

New Alien: Covenant Trailer – The xenomorphs are back on a whole new planet

The new Alien: Covenant trailer is certainly intriguing. After the mixed reaction to Prometheus, it’s certainly keen to show this will be a more typical Alien movie, while also suggesting it won’t be exactly the same as the earlier movies.

It also hints towards some mysteries, such as what spores have to do with the film, what a strange white monster that’s briefly glimpsed is, and exactly how it links to both Prometheus and later Alien movies.It’s all immensely tantalising.

Alien: Covenant Cast & Crew Pic Shows Michael Fassbender, Katherine Waterston & First Look At James Franco

Prometheus may have resulted in some grumbling from critics and audiences, but it was certainly a success at the box office, grossing more than $400 million. It meant that Fox wanted another movie, but they also wanted a few changes, so while Michael Fassbender got to stay, most of the other elements have been jettisoned in favour of what’s said will be a more ‘traditional’ alien movie.

A new cast & crew pic has arrived, which gives us a fresh look at Fassbender, the new lead, Katherine Waterston, as well as our first official view of James Franco in the film, who is rumoured to be playing Ellen Ripley’s father.

Alien: Covenant Trailer – The xenomorphs are back and ready to kill

Following the muted and somewhat confused reaction to Prometheus, 20th Century Fox has been keen to show the follow-up will be something more familiar. The Alien name has returned, the promise has been made that the better known elements of the franchise will be back, and now the first trailer is here to back that up.

There’s a bit of gore, chestbursters, eggs, people being terrified in spaceships, and, of course, the aliens themselves.
