Kevin Spacey Is Taking On Winston Churchill In Captain Of The Gate

March 25, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

kevin-spaceyWhen you look at Kevin Spacey, nobody’s ever been particularly struck by how much he looks like Winston Churchill, but that doesn’t mean it’s a bad idea that he’s going to play the UK’s World War II leader in Captain of the Gate.

THR reports that the film chronicles Churchill’s ‘rise to power as he stood against parliament to defend Britain and the world from Adolf Hitler’s Third Reich’. That isn’t actually that much of a description, as Churchill was a very busy man in the run up to and during the war, and it’s not clear if this will be an overview, or if it will look at a very specific period between the wars.

Many forget that Winston wasn’t Prime Minister when the war started, but due to his actions before the conflict broke out, he was asked to take over, becoming one of the most admired leaders of the 20th Century in the process. He was PM between 1940 and 1945, and again from 1951 to 1955.

Ben Kaplan (WWII in HD, Reagan) wrote the screenplay, although it doesn’t appear a director is attached as yet.

Christoph Waltz Joins Horrible Bosses 2, Kevin Spacey & Jennifer Aniston Returning

October 26, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

christoph-waltzA few weeks ago it was reported that Christoph Waltz was being sought to star in Horrible Bosses 2, but at the time it seemed he’d be too busy. However he’s now got the time, as he has finalised a deal. It’s also been revealed that original Horrible Bosses stars Kevin Spacey and Jennifer Aniston will reprise their roles.

Chris Pine is playing one half of a father-son team, with Waltz as the dad, who steal the main characters’ (Jason Bateman, Jason Bateman, Jason Sudeikis) idea for a new invention.

It isn’t known exactly how Kevin Spacey and Jennifer Aniston’s characters will fit into the sequel’s story. Jamie Foxx is also returning.

Sean Anders is directing from a screenplay by John Francis Daley and Jonathan M. Goldstein. Production is currently under way in Los Angeles.

House Of Cards – Season 1 (Blu-ray)

June 12, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Kevin Spacey, Robin Wright, Corey Stoll, Kate Mara
Director: Various
Running Time: 674 mins
Certificate: 18
Release Date: June 10th 2013

Most businesses try out new things by dipping their toe in and limiting their financial exposure, testing the waters before going full hog. However Netflix isn’t that kind of company. For their second original series (after Lilyhammer), some sources suggest they spent $100 million on House Of Cards.

They also managed to draw in such big names as David Fincher to produce on the promise that unlike with normal TV, they’d be relatively hands off and just let the show’s team create. They didn’t stint on the cast either, luring in the likes of Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright. [Read more…]

Margin Call (DVD)

November 8, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Zachary Quinto, Kevin Spacey, Stanley Tucci, Jeremy Irons, Penn Badgley
Director: J.C. Chandor
Running Time: 105 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: November 12th 2012

While the financial crisis has been one of the biggest global events since the Second World War, the film industry has had difficulty dealing with it. Part of the reason for that is the fear that if you just have a bunch of people sitting around talking about numbers, the audience’s eyes will glaze over and they’ll start heading for the exit. However writer/director J.C. Chandor trusts that not everyone completely zones out if things aren’t simple, and also realises that if you get a great bunch of actors together, you can take on subjects that might initially seem dull, but can still actually make a really good film. Glengarry Glen Ross (Blu-ray/DVD)

October 22, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Al Pacino, Jack Lemmon, Kevin Spacey, Alex Baldwin, Ed Harris
Director: James Foley
Running Time: 100 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: October 22nd 2012

Glengarry Glen Ross is proof of what can happen when you put a great script in the hands of an ensemble of dynamite actors. In many ways Glengarry Glen Ross shouldn’t work. It’s largely about people sitting around talking, has minimal plot, and never fully escapes the stage that David Mamet’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play was originally presented on.

However, what in many films would be seen as shortcomings are here the movie’s greatest strengths, as it allows the film to concentrate on the electric dynamism of Mamet’s dialogue in the hands of one of the best groups of actors ever assembled for a film (even Jack Lemmon said it was the best cast he’d ever been involved with, which is saying something). After all, it contains four Oscar-winners and two more Oscar nominees, which is certainly an impressive line-up, especially as likes of Kevin Spacey weren’t that well known when it was made.
