Indignation Trailer – Logan Lerman takes on a Philip Roth adaptation

May 15, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

indignation-logan-lermanMany were incredibly impressed with young Logan Lerman’s performance in Indignation when it debuted at Sundance, suggesting it will help many see the Percy Jackson star in a new light (at least for those who haven’t seen Perks Of Being A Wallflower). Now the trailer has arrived so we can get a taste of the Philip Roth adaptation.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Based on Philip Roth’s late novel, Indignation takes place in 1951, as Marcus Messner (Logan Lerman), a brilliant working class Jewish boy from Newark, New Jersey, travels on scholarship to a small, conservative college in Ohio, thus exempting him from being drafted into the Korean War. But once there, Marcus’s growing infatuation with his beautiful classmate Olivia Hutton (Sarah Gadon), and his clashes with the college’s imposing Dean, Hawes Caudwell (Tracy Letts), put his and his family’s best laid plans to the ultimate test.’

The movie is the first film directed by James Schamus, best known for being the head of Focus Features and for writing most of Ang Lee’s movies.

Following it Sundance debut January, the movie will screen this June at Sundance London on both Saturday 4th and Sunday 5th June. There will also be a special event “In Conversation with James Schamus” on 4th June. Tickets for all screenings are now on sale here: www.sundance.org/london

The movie will be out in the US in July.

Miles Teller, Ansel Elgort, Dave Franco & Logan Lerman On Young Han Solo Shortlist

January 11, 2016 By Tim Isaac 2 Comments

logan-lerman

The role of a young Han Solo in the planned Star Wars spin-off about the legendary character was always bound to be a hotly fought over role, and also one where Disney/Lucasfilm and directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller were likely to cast a wide net while looking for the perfect person. Now Variety reports they’re narrowing in on the actorwho’ll land the role, soming up with a shortlist of a dozen names.

That list includes some hot young things, such as Miles Teller, Ansel Elgort, Dave Franco, Logan Lerman, Jack Reynor, Scott Eastwood, Emory Cohen, and Blake Jenner. Earlier in the search the makers considered both older and younger actors but it looks like they’ve decided their film Han Solo should be in his early 20s (although Eastwood is a little older as he’s 29).

It is very early to cast, as the movie isn’t expected to go into production until January 2017 (for release May 25, 2018). However it’s suggested the reason that they want to find their man now is because of a planned cameo in this year’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, which is also set before the events of Star Wars: A New Hope.

All of the finalists are now expected to screen-test and the person who’ll be filling Harrison Ford’s boots will be chosen within the next few weeks. It’ll certainly be interesting to see who they pick, as some of those on the shortlist have the swagger and others have the looks, but it’s a tough job for someone to pull both those together in a way audiences will be happy with. Whoever it is, it seems we can be assured Han is gonna be very good looking.

Logan Lerman & Sarah Gadon Have Indignation

April 7, 2015 By Tim Isaac 5 Comments

logan-lermanThe extremely long-gestating adaptation of Philip Rother’s American Pastoral is slowly making its way to the screen, with Ewan McGregor set to star and direct. However it’s not the only Roth novel that’s getting a movie version as James Schamus is set to write and direct Indignation, which has just added Logan Lerman and Sarah Gadon to the cast, according to Deadline.

Roth’s Indignation is ‘set in 1951 and focuses on Marcus (Lerman), the 18-year-old son of a kosher butcher in Newark who grapples with anti-Semitism, sexual repression and the escalating Korean War as he comes of age at a Midwestern Lutheran college. Into his life comes Olivia Hutton (Gadon). Blonde and pretty, Olivia is a classmate of Marcus’ at Winesburg College. She goes on a date with Marcus and is attracted to his intensity. She is sexually promiscuous, headstrong and fiercely independent. A daughter to a highly regarded Cleveland surgeon, Olivia had previously attempted suicide and spent time in a mental institution.’

It’s a good fit for Lerman, who many don’t realise is Jewish himself and so has the right cultural background for the role.

Gadon incidentally has also just signed up for the mini-series adaptation of Stephen King’s 11/22/63, which has James Franco in the lead as a time-travelling teacher who sets out to prevent JFK’s assassination.

Noah (Blu-ray Review)

July 29, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Russell Crowe, Jennifer Connelly, Logan Lerman, Douglas Booth, Emma Watson
Director: Darren Aronofsky
Running Time: 138 mins
Certificate: 12
Release Date: July 28th 2014 (UK)

For years Darren Aronofsky tried to get his epic version of Noah off the ground, but it never seemed likely to really happen. His only previous foray into big budget filmmaking, The Fountain, turned into a bit of a disaster, with only part of the movie actually made (due to studio intervention) and what was left being confusing and making little money at the box office.

However after the success of Black Swan and with biblical epics looking like they might be coming back into fashion, Paramount decided to take a punt on the movie. However this is Darren Aronofsky, the man behind the likes of Requiem For A Dream and Pi, so it was always clear this wasn’t going to be your typical $125 million studio movie. That said, it appears even Paramount was surprised by how strange and intense it turned out. After viewing Darren’s preferred version they made their own, more traditional cut, but it turned out audiences liked Aronofsky’s take better and so that’s what we have. [Read more…]
