The First Han Solo Star Wars Story Cast Photo Arrives As Principal Photography Begins

February 21, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

In case anyone was wondering whether Alden Ehrenreich has the right look to be Han Solo, the first cast photo has arrived, which actually shows him to be a better ringer for a young Harrison Ford than you might expect. The pic has arrived to mark the start on principal photography on the currently untitled Han Solo Star Wars Story on February 20th at Pinewood Studios.

According to the press release, ‘The movie will explore the duo¹s adventures before the events of Star Wars: A New Hope, including their early encounters with that other card-playing rogue from a galaxy far, far away, Lando Calrissian. Phil Lord and Christopher Miller are directors co-piloting the movie, with a cast that includes Alden Ehrenreich as Han Solo, Woody Harrelson, Emilia Clarke, Donald Glover as Lando Calrissian, Thandie Newton, and Phoebe Waller-Bridge, with Joonas Suotamo as Chewbacca.

“Watching such inspired people from all over the world, with such unique voices, come together for the sole purpose of making art, is nothing short of miraculous,” Lord and Miller said. “We can’t think of anything funny to say, because we just feel really moved, and really lucky.”‘

The untitled Han Solo Star Wars Story is set for release in May, 2018.

Westworld’s Thandie Newton Up For Young Han Solo Star Wars Movie

February 11, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Some filming has already begun of Disney’s planned Star Wars movie based on what Han Solo was up to before the events of A New Hope, but it’s still adding to its cast. Variety reports that Westworld’s Thandie Newton is in talks for the movie, although not too surprisingly, there’s no info on what her character might be.

Alden Ehrenreich is taking over from Harrison Ford in the main role, with Donald Glover, Woody Harrelson, Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Emilia Clarke also set to star. Harrelson will be Solo’s mentor, while Glover will be a young Lando Calrissian. However, it’s not known who the women will play.

The Lego Movie and 21 Jump Street’s Phil Lord and Chris Miller are set to direct the movie, which is due out May 2018.

Newton, who’s previously been seen is the likes of Crash, 2012, Mission: Impossible II, and The Pursuit Of Happyness, is just coming off her acclaimed role as a robot in Westworld. The HBO show earned her a Golden Globe nomination.

Woody Harrelson Circling Han Solo Spin-off Movie

January 4, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The planned Han Solo spin-off film is really coming together with Alden Ehrenreich as the younger version of the character made famous by Harrison Ford, Donald Glover as Lando Calrissian, and Emilia Clarke as the female lead (the character’s name is yet to be released). Now another name may be close to signing, as Variety says that Woody Harrelson is in early talks for the movie.

If he does end up in the movie, he will play a character described as a mentor to the young Han. As Harrelson has made a career out of playing laid back dudes, and more recently unlikely mentors in the likes of The Hunger Games and The Edge Of Seventeen, he seems a good choice to play someone who helped make Han Solo the man he was across four wildly popular movies.

Lego Movie and 21 Jump Street helmers Phil Lord and Chris Miller are set to direct the movie. It’ll be in cinemas May 2018.

Miles Teller, Ansel Elgort, Dave Franco & Logan Lerman On Young Han Solo Shortlist

January 11, 2016 By Tim Isaac 2 Comments

logan-lerman

The role of a young Han Solo in the planned Star Wars spin-off about the legendary character was always bound to be a hotly fought over role, and also one where Disney/Lucasfilm and directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller were likely to cast a wide net while looking for the perfect person. Now Variety reports they’re narrowing in on the actorwho’ll land the role, soming up with a shortlist of a dozen names.

That list includes some hot young things, such as Miles Teller, Ansel Elgort, Dave Franco, Logan Lerman, Jack Reynor, Scott Eastwood, Emory Cohen, and Blake Jenner. Earlier in the search the makers considered both older and younger actors but it looks like they’ve decided their film Han Solo should be in his early 20s (although Eastwood is a little older as he’s 29).

It is very early to cast, as the movie isn’t expected to go into production until January 2017 (for release May 25, 2018). However it’s suggested the reason that they want to find their man now is because of a planned cameo in this year’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, which is also set before the events of Star Wars: A New Hope.

All of the finalists are now expected to screen-test and the person who’ll be filling Harrison Ford’s boots will be chosen within the next few weeks. It’ll certainly be interesting to see who they pick, as some of those on the shortlist have the swagger and others have the looks, but it’s a tough job for someone to pull both those together in a way audiences will be happy with. Whoever it is, it seems we can be assured Han is gonna be very good looking.

Lego Movie Directors Phil Lord & Chris Miller Plan Han Solo Origins Star Wars Movie

July 8, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

han-soloFrom the moment it was announced that Disney planned to intersperse its main new Star Wars movies with a series of stand-alone tales set in a galaxy far, far away, there’s been speculation that this would include a look at a young Han Solo.

Indeed when Rogue One was first announced many jumped at the idea that it would be about Han’s origins (it’s actually about the mission to steal the Death Star plans, which sets A New Hope in motion).

However now it’s definitely happening, with THR reporting that a Han Solo movie is happening and Lego Movie and 21 Jump Street helmers Phil Lord and Chris Miller are set to direct it.

There aren’t too many further details, although we do know that Lawrence Kasdan wrote the script, which ‘focuses on how young Han Solo became the smuggler, thief, and scoundrel whom Luke Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi first encountered in the cantina at Mos Eisley’.

Expect to hear more soon.

Lego Movie’s Phil Lord & Chris Miller Plan Animated Spider-Man Movie

April 23, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

phil-lord-and-chris-millerPhil Lord & Chris Miller are kings of taking on ideas that many people thought could never work and turning them into massively successful film, whether it’s Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs, 21 Jump Street or The Lego Movie. Now they’re hoping to do it again, as Sony has revealed they’re working on an animated Spider-man film.

It means the studio is hoping to have two Spidey franchises running at once, with a live-action Peter Parker joining up with Marvel heroes for Captain America 3 before getting his own stand-alone film, as well as Lord & Miller’s animated take.

There’s no news on exactly how the film will work, but it’s due out July 20th, 2018, with Miller and Lord writing the treatment and producing (it’s not clear whether they’ll also direct), with the press release saying that ‘The film will exist independently of the projects in the live-action Spider-Man universe, all of which are continuing’.

It’ll certainly be interesting to see if it works.

Phil Lord and Chris Miller Circling The Rosie Project

September 24, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

phil-lord-and-chris-millerPhil Lord and Chris Miller are rare for having huge success in both the live-action and animation arenas. It’s allowed them to have an incredible year where The Lego Movie grossed $468 million worldwide, while 22 Jump Street made $324 million.

Now they’re plotting future moves, with Deadline reporting that they’re circling The Rosie Project.

Based on Graeme Simison’s novel, the movie is about genetics professor Don Tillman, who may have Asberger’s Disease. Unfortunately for him, he’s never had a second date, so he sets off on what he calls The Wife Project, which involves a questionnaire to find a non-smoking, non-drinking female who will fit with his lifestyle.

Unsurprisingly his attempt to find such a perfectly compliant woman goes wrong when he meets a woman named Rosie, who fits none of his criteria but may be the right match for him.

Miller and Lord recently met with the film’s screenwriters, Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber. They’re apparently very interested but won’t fully commit until a completed script is ready.

Will The LEGO Movie Helmers Take Over Ghostbusters 3?

March 20, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

phil-lord-chris-millerJust 24 hours after Ivan Reitman left Ghostbusters 3, Nikki Finke has tweeted that she thinks she knows his replacement, saying ‘Hot duo to direct #Ghostbusters3? My sources say Phil Lord & Chris Miller (‘Lego Movie’, ’21 Jump St’) in talks to replace Ivan Reitman.’

Lord and Miller are just coming off a major hit The Lego Movie, and also previously had success with their live-action debut, 21 Jump Street. They’d seem a good team to take on the movie, although at the moment it’s more rumour than reality, partly because some are sceptical of Finke’s sources, as she’s had few scoops since her acrimonious split from the site she founded, Deadline.com – which is coincidentally (or not) the site Reitman chose to talk to about leaving Ghostbusters.

The latest suggestion about Ghostbusters 3 is that the likes of Dan Aykroyd and Ernie Hudson, will have extended cameos, but it will largely be a new generation, who will hopefully relaunch the franchise. It’s not known if the recent death of Harold Ramis may lure Bill Murray back into the fold.

The plan is to shoot early next yeat.

Lego Movie Sequel Gets Robot Chicken Director Chris McKay

March 12, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

lego-movie-character-poster3Phil Lord and Chris Miller are continuing their run of starting off successful animated franchises, before heading off and leaving the sequels to someone else. After helming Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs, they left part two to Cody Cameron and Kris Pearn. Now, following the massive success of The Lego Movie, it’ll be Chris McKay taking over the directing reigns for the sequel, according to Deadline.

It’s perhaps not surprising there’s been a changeover as Miller and Lord are very busy people, and Warner wants to get going on the Lego Movie follow-up as soon as humanly possible, having already set a May 26th, 2017 release date. That may seem a long way away, but it’s actually not that long in animation terms.

Jared Stern (The Internship) and Michelle Morgan (Nancy Drew) are writing the script, and Miller and Lord will still be around as producers. Chris McKay previously directed animated TV shows such as Robot Chicken, Moral Orel and Titan Maxium.

Warner is also developing a Lego Ninjago movie, but it’s still not known when we might see that.
